Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Family Secret

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

The video continued playing on the screen, frozen on the face of the woman who had just destroyed every assumption about the Hawthorne family.

Eleanor Hawthorne.

Daniel’s mother.

Richard’s wife.

The woman whose name was engraved on charity buildings across the city.

The woman everyone in the room respected.

The woman who had spent decades presenting herself as the perfect image of elegance and kindness.

Now her face appeared beside Vanessa Vance in a hidden recording.

Planning my downfall.

Daniel looked like someone had taken the ground out from beneath him.

"No.""

It was barely a whisper.

The officer looked at him.

"Do you know this person?""

Daniel didn't answer.

He just stared at the screen.

Richard looked equally shocked.

"Eleanor...""

His voice sounded broken.

The video resumed.

Eleanor stood in the private corridor outside Richard's office.

Her posture was calm.

Controlled.

Like this wasn't a secret meeting.

Like she had done things like this before.

Vanessa looked nervous beside her.

"I still think this is risky," Vanessa said.

Eleanor replied calmly.

"Risky is allowing a stranger to inherit what belongs to my family.""

My stomach tightened.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"She doesn't even know who she is," Vanessa said.

Eleanor looked toward Richard's office door.

"That's why this is the perfect time.""

The room became colder.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

Because suddenly I understood.

This wasn't about Vanessa.

She was only a piece of something much bigger.

Eleanor had been watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

The woman continued on the recording.

"Once the necklace appears in her bag, everyone will believe the story.""

Vanessa asked:

"And Richard?""

Eleanor smiled.

"He will finally understand that protecting his mistake has consequences.""

The video stopped.

No one needed to hear more.

The message was clear.

Daniel turned away from the screen.

His face was pale.

"I don't understand.""

Nobody answered.

He looked at Richard.

"How could she do this?""

Richard didn't speak.

Because he didn't have an answer.

I watched Daniel carefully.

For the first time since I met him, he didn't look like the powerful Hawthorne heir.

He looked like a son discovering his family was not what he believed.

The officer stepped forward.

"Mr. Hawthorne, we need to speak with your mother.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

His voice was empty.

"Find her.""

The security manager immediately checked the system.

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Hawthorne...""

Daniel looked over.

"What?""

"Mrs. Hawthorne isn't on the estate.""

Richard frowned.

"When did she leave?""

The manager checked.

"Twenty minutes ago.""

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

Twenty minutes.

That was exactly when the truth started coming out.

Eleanor hadn't stayed to defend herself.

She had left.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

It wasn't a confident laugh.

It was exhausted.

"You all think this changes everything?""

Daniel looked at her.

"It proves you worked with my mother.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

She looked at the screen.

"It proves your mother was involved.""

The room became silent.

Daniel frowned.

"What are you saying?""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

"You really think I controlled this?""

Nobody answered.

She continued.

"You think I was the person making decisions?""

Her eyes moved toward me.

"I was following instructions.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"From who?""

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"You still don't understand.""

A pause.

"Your family has been fighting over this inheritance long before I entered the picture.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"What did Eleanor promise you?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"She promised me something your family values more than money.""

"What?""

"Power.""

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

Vanessa looked at me.

"She told me if Emily disappeared from the Hawthorne story, everything would return to normal.""

I stared at her.

"Disappear?""

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she seemed uncomfortable with her own words.

"I didn't know she would go this far.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Go this far?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

The officer noticed.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked at the officer.

"Ask Richard.""

Everyone turned.

Richard stood completely still.

"What?""

Vanessa's voice became quieter.

"Ask him why Emily's mother really died.""

My body froze.

The room disappeared for a second.

"What did you say?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I think you deserve the truth.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Stop.""

But I looked at him.

"No.""

My voice shook.

"I want to know.""

Richard's face changed.

A pain appeared there that I had never seen before.

"Emily...""

"Tell me.""

Silence.

Then Richard whispered:

"Your mother didn't die because of an illness.""

My heart stopped.

The words felt impossible.

"Then what happened?""

Richard looked down.

"She was under pressure.""

"What kind of pressure?""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"What kind?""

Richard finally looked at me.

"The day before she died, she received a visit.""

The room was silent.

"From Eleanor.""

A cold wave moved through me.

Daniel looked horrified.

"My mother?""

Richard nodded.

"I didn't know at the time.""

His voice cracked.

"Your mother never told me everything. She only said she was afraid.""

My hands started shaking.

"Afraid of Eleanor?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

Nobody moved.

I felt like I was falling.

All those years.

All those memories.

My mother sitting alone at the kitchen table.

My mother checking the locks twice every night.

My mother telling me never to trust people who smiled too easily.

I had always thought she was just cautious.

Now I wondered if she had been warning me.

Daniel looked at his father.

"Why didn't you investigate?""

Richard looked ashamed.

"Because I believed Eleanor when she told me your mother was struggling emotionally.""

The words hit hard.

Because they sounded like another betrayal.

Richard had chosen not to see.

Daniel walked away slightly.

He couldn't look at his father.

The officer spoke carefully.

"We need to locate Eleanor Hawthorne immediately.""

The security manager suddenly raised his hand.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at him.

"There is something else.""

He pointed at the screen.

"The hidden camera that recorded Eleanor and Vanessa.""

Daniel frowned.

"What about it?""

"It wasn't installed by security.""

"Then who installed it?""

The manager looked nervous.

"I checked the device information.""

A pause.

"The camera belonged to Hawthorne family property.""

Richard frowned.

"What does that mean?""

The manager looked at him.

"It means someone inside this family was secretly recording Eleanor.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Can you identify who?""

The man nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

He looked at the screen.

"The device was registered under one person's name.""

Everyone waited.

Then he said:

"Daniel Hawthorne.""

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at him.

"That's impossible.""

The manager shook his head.

"I'm sorry, sir.""

He turned the screen around.

"According to the system...""

"You installed that camera six months ago.""

I looked at Daniel.

May you like

And for the first time that night...

I wondered if he had known the truth all along.
