Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Took to Her Grave
I stared at the photo on Daniel’s phone until the words blurred.
"Come alone if you want to know why your mother really died.""
The sentence felt like a hand closing around my heart.
For years, I had lived with one painful truth.
My mother was gone.
That was the one thing I never questioned.
But now, standing inside the Hawthorne mansion, surrounded by secrets and lies, I realized something terrifying.
I had never actually known the whole story.
I looked at the photograph again.
The old wooden box sat beside Eleanor.
My mother's box.
The same box I kept under my bed.
The same box I had been told never to lose.
Inside it were the last pieces of the woman who raised me.
Letters.
Pictures.
A small necklace.
A few documents she refused to explain.
I had always believed those things were memories.
Now I wondered if they were evidence.
Daniel watched my face carefully.
"Emily.""
I didn't look up.
"She knows.""
My voice was barely audible.
"She knows what happened to my mother.""
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
His expression was filled with fear.
"You cannot go.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
"You know something.""
He looked away.
"Richard.""
My voice became stronger.
"What do you know?""
He stayed silent.
Daniel looked at him.
"Father.""
Richard finally spoke.
"After your mother died, Eleanor told me she had destroyed every connection between her and Emily.""
My heart stopped.
"What does that mean?""
Richard looked at me.
"She said your mother left behind documents that could damage the Hawthorne family.""
I felt sick.
"Documents about me?""
"Yes.""
"Where are they?""
Richard looked toward the phone.
"I don't know.""
I stared at him.
"But Eleanor does.""
Nobody disagreed.
Daniel took a step closer.
"I'm coming with you.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
His expression changed.
"Emily.""
"She specifically said alone.""
Daniel looked frustrated.
"That's exactly why you shouldn't go.""
I looked at him.
"For twenty-four years, everyone decided what I should know.""
My voice cracked.
"My mother.""
"Your father.""
"Your family.""
I looked around the mansion.
"Everyone.""
I swallowed.
"I'm done being the last person to know the truth about my own life.""
Daniel became quiet.
Because he knew I was right.
The officer immediately objected.
"This is not safe.""
I looked at him.
"I know.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Emily, please.""
I looked at him.
The man who was my father but had never been there.
The man who carried guilt for years.
"I need answers.""
His eyes filled with regret.
"I know.""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Then we're not sending her alone.""
I looked at him.
"But—"
He interrupted.
"I won't follow you.""
A pause.
"I'll stay close enough to protect you if something happens.""
I wanted to argue.
But I couldn't.
Because after everything tonight...
I knew I needed someone who had finally chosen the truth over appearances.
The location in the photo led us to an abandoned Hawthorne-owned property outside the city.
An old lakeside house.
One that had not been used in years.
The place looked exactly like a forgotten memory.
Dark windows.
Weathered wooden walls.
Trees surrounding the property.
As I stepped out of the car, the cold air hit my face.
Daniel stayed near the road, hidden from view.
I walked toward the house alone.
The front door was already open.
That scared me more than a locked door would have.
"Eleanor?""
My voice echoed.
No answer.
I stepped inside.
The house smelled old.
Like dust and forgotten years.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Eleanor appeared from the hallway.
She looked completely different from the woman at the gala.
No elegant smile.
No perfect posture.
Just exhaustion.
"You came.""
I held my ground.
"You knew I would.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Your mother was always brave.""
The mention of her name made my chest tighten.
"Don't talk about her.""
Eleanor looked hurt.
"She hated me.""
"Did she have a reason?""
Silence.
Then Eleanor walked toward a table.
My mother's wooden box sat there.
Exactly like the photo.
"I never wanted things to happen this way.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You planned to frame me.""
"I planned to protect my family.""
I stared at her.
"By destroying mine?""
Eleanor looked down.
"You don't understand what your existence did.""
There it was again.
The same excuse.
The same belief that I was the problem.
"I was a baby.""
Her eyes flickered.
"Yes.""
A pause.
"And that was the problem.""
I felt anger rise.
"You blamed a child?""
"No.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"I blamed Richard.""
That answer surprised me.
She continued.
"Your father was weak. He loved your mother. He loved you.""
Her voice became bitter.
"But he was never strong enough to stand against his family.""
I said nothing.
Because part of me hated her.
But part of me wanted to understand.
"Why did my mother die?""
Eleanor looked away.
For the first time...
She looked afraid.
"Because she found out the truth.""
"What truth?""
Eleanor slowly opened the wooden box.
Inside were papers.
Old documents.
My breath stopped.
"Your mother discovered that Richard's father had created a secret trust.""
She pulled out a document.
"Not just for you.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"It means your mother discovered that the Hawthorne fortune was never supposed to belong only to the Hawthorne family.""
She handed me the document.
I read the first page.
My hands started shaking.
The document stated that a portion of the family wealth was intended for descendants regardless of marriage status or family approval.
My mother had been fighting for my rights.
Not money.
Not luxury.
Rights.
Eleanor continued.
"Your mother threatened to expose the family.""
"Because she wanted what was mine.""
"No.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Because she wanted you to have what was yours.""
My anger became confusion.
"Then why did you hurt her?""
Eleanor's face changed.
"I didn't.""
The answer came too quickly.
I stared.
"You expect me to believe that?""
Eleanor looked toward the window.
"Your mother was supposed to meet me that night.""
My heart stopped.
"Why?""
"To give me the documents.""
"Then what happened?""
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Someone followed her.""
A chill moved through me.
"Who?""
Before Eleanor could answer...
The lights suddenly went out.
The room went completely dark.
I heard movement.
A door slam.
Then a voice from behind me.
A voice I never expected.
"Emily.""
My blood froze.
Because it wasn't Eleanor.
It was Daniel.
But he wasn't supposed to be inside.
He was supposed to be outside.
I turned.
A figure stepped into the moonlight.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Someone holding a file folder.
The stranger looked at Eleanor.
Then at me.
And said:
"She was never the person who killed your mother.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Then who did?""
The stranger looked toward the doorway.
And whispered:
"The person who has been protecting the Hawthorne family from the beginning.""
A shadow moved outside.
May you like
And when I saw who stepped into the room...
I realized the final secret was someone I trusted.
