Chapter 4: The Daughter Hidden Behind the Uniform
The words echoed through the Hawthorne foyer long after Richard stopped speaking.
"You are my daughter.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to know how to react.
For years, I had walked through this mansion carrying trays, cleaning rooms, and lowering my eyes whenever powerful people passed by.
I had memorized every painting on the walls.
Every expensive piece of furniture.
Every family portrait.
But never once had I imagined that my own blood was connected to this place.
I stared at Richard Hawthorne.
The man standing in front of me was a stranger.
Yet somehow, the photograph in his hand felt familiar.
The young woman beside him.
My mother.
The same woman whose old perfume bottle I kept in a drawer at my apartment.
The same woman who raised me alone.
The same woman who cried whenever someone mentioned the Hawthorne name.
I had always thought she was hiding a painful memory.
I never knew she was hiding my father.
Daniel looked at Richard with disbelief.
"Father.""
His voice was quieter than before.
"What are you saying?""
Richard didn't look away from me.
"The truth.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
A short, nervous laugh.
"This is absurd.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She shook her head.
"You're expecting us to believe that your housekeeper is secretly your daughter?""
Her voice grew sharper.
"After twenty-four years, you suddenly discover this?""
Richard finally looked at Vanessa.
And the disappointment in his eyes was obvious.
"I didn't discover her tonight.""
The room became even quieter.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"What?""
Richard looked at me.
"I have known about Emily for years.""
My heart pounded.
"Then why...""
My voice broke.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?""
Richard's face changed.
For the first time, the powerful businessman looked like an ordinary man carrying regret.
"Because your mother asked me not to.""
A painful silence followed.
"My mother knew you?""
Richard nodded slowly.
"She was the only person who ever made me question the life I had built.""
I looked down at the photograph.
My fingers trembled.
"Why did she leave?""
Richard closed his eyes for a moment.
"Because I was a coward.""
Nobody expected that answer.
Not even Daniel.
Richard continued.
"When I found out she was pregnant, my family was in the middle of a major business crisis. My father believed any scandal would destroy the Hawthorne name.""
His voice became heavier.
"He offered your mother money to disappear.""
My stomach tightened.
"And she accepted?""
"No.""
Richard looked at me.
"She refused.""
A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it.
That sounded like my mother.
She was stubborn.
She never accepted help from anyone.
Even when we struggled.
Even when she worked two jobs.
She always told me:
"Emily, your dignity is the one thing nobody can take from you.""
Richard continued.
"She left because she believed I would never choose her over my family.""
His voice dropped.
"And she was right.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
"Why did you let her work here?""
Richard looked at him.
"Because I wanted to be close to her.""
Daniel frowned.
"You knew she was here?""
Richard nodded.
"I saw her application three years ago.""
My eyes widened.
"You knew?""
Richard looked ashamed.
"I knew your name. I knew your mother's name. I knew exactly who you were.""
My breathing became unsteady.
"Then why didn't you say anything?""
"Because every time I tried...""
He stopped.
"I was afraid.""
That answer surprised me.
Richard Hawthorne.
A man whose name controlled entire industries.
A man who intimidated politicians and executives.
Was afraid.
Of me.
"I thought if I appeared suddenly, I would only hurt you more.""
I looked around the foyer.
At all the faces watching.
At the same people who had judged me minutes earlier.
Everything felt unreal.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"You expect everyone to believe this?""
Her voice cut through the emotion.
She stepped forward.
"This is convenient.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Vanessa.""
"No.""
She pointed at me.
"Think about it. The night she gets accused of stealing a priceless necklace, suddenly she becomes Richard Hawthorne's hidden daughter?""
Her eyes narrowed.
"Does anyone else see the timing?""
Some guests looked uncertain.
And I hated that part of her argument made sense.
Because the truth was unbelievable.
Even to me.
Richard's expression hardened.
"Be careful.""
Vanessa smiled slightly.
"Or what?""
A dangerous silence followed.
Daniel looked between them.
"Enough.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"I think everyone here deserves to know the full story.""
Richard's face changed.
A warning.
"Don't.""
But Vanessa continued.
"Emily Porter wasn't randomly hired by Hawthorne Estate Services.""
My stomach dropped.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Ask Richard why your application was personally approved.""
I turned toward him.
Richard didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
A terrible feeling grew inside me.
"You chose me?""
Richard looked down.
"Yes.""
The room filled with whispers again.
Vanessa smiled.
"Interesting, isn't it?""
She turned to the guests.
"She wasn't just a housekeeper.""
Her voice became cruel.
"She was placed here.""
I felt everyone looking at me again.
Only this time, I didn't know what to believe.
"Was I?""
I looked at Richard.
"Did you bring me here because you wanted to watch me?""
Richard's expression broke.
"No.""
He stepped closer.
"I brought you here because I wanted to know my daughter.""
The pain in his voice sounded real.
But I had spent my whole life learning not to trust powerful people.
People who could buy solutions.
People who could erase mistakes.
People who could control narratives.
Daniel seemed to understand my confusion.
He stepped beside me.
"Emily.""
I looked at him.
"Don't make a decision based on Vanessa's words.""
Vanessa immediately snapped.
"And why should she trust you?""
Daniel looked at her.
"Because unlike you, I haven't lied to her.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face darkened.
She looked at the security device.
Then at Richard.
Then at me.
And suddenly I realized something.
The necklace wasn't the real attack.
It was only the beginning.
Someone had planned this entire night.
Someone wanted me humiliated.
Someone wanted Richard exposed.
Someone wanted the Hawthorne family destroyed.
The question was why.
Daniel walked toward the security manager.
"Can we recover the full recording?""
The man nodded.
"Possibly. The device may have stored more.""
"Do it.""
The security manager connected it again.
Everyone waited.
A few seconds passed.
Then the audio returned.
But this time...
The voice wasn't Vanessa's.
It was Richard's.
My blood went cold.
Because the recording had been made before tonight.
And Richard's voice said:
"If Emily ever discovers the truth, she cannot inherit anything.""
The entire room froze.
I looked at Richard.
He looked shocked.
"I never said that.""
But the recording continued.
A second voice answered.
A voice I recognized.
Vanessa.
"Then we agree. Emily must never know she is your daughter.""
My heart stopped.
Because now I understood.
Vanessa hadn't just framed me.
She had known my secret before I did.
May you like
And somehow...
She had been planning around my existence for years.
