Chapter 2: The Hidden Visitor
The silence after Daniel’s question was heavier than the accusation that had started everything.
Nobody moved.
Nobody whispered.
The wealthy guests who had spent the last ten minutes judging me suddenly became uncomfortable.
Because the story had changed.
A moment ago, I was the thief.
Now there was another person inside Vanessa’s room.
Someone who was never supposed to be there.
Vanessa recovered quickly.
She always did.
That was one thing I learned about people like her.
They could fall apart inside and still stand perfectly straight.
She lifted her chin.
"Daniel, you are misunderstanding what you saw.""
Daniel didn't blink.
"Am I?""
The security manager stood beside the control panel, nervous.
"Mr. Hawthorne, the footage is clear. The man entering the room is Mr. Charles Whitmore.""
A few guests reacted immediately.
Charles Whitmore.
Richard Hawthorne's personal assistant.
He had worked for the Hawthorne family for fifteen years.
He was known as a loyal employee.
A man trusted with private business information.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Charles was probably helping me with something.""
Daniel looked at her.
"At 8:17 PM?""
"Yes.""
"Without telling security?""
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
The room noticed.
So did I.
Daniel turned back to the screen.
"Continue.""
The footage played again.
Everyone watched.
I watched myself walking around Vanessa's room.
I remembered that moment.
I had been cleaning the antique mirror near the window.
I had no idea someone was watching me from behind the door.
On the screen, Charles entered.
He spoke to Vanessa.
There was no audio from that camera.
But their body language told a story.
Charles looked nervous.
Vanessa looked impatient.
Then something happened.
Vanessa took a small jewelry box from the drawer.
The crowd leaned forward.
My heartbeat accelerated.
Because I knew something important was coming.
On the screen, Vanessa opened the box.
She removed the diamond necklace.
Then she handed it to Charles.
A shocked murmur spread through the foyer.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"That proves nothing.""
But nobody was listening anymore.
Daniel raised his hand.
"Keep playing.""
The footage continued.
Charles held the necklace.
He looked around.
Then Vanessa pointed toward the door.
A few seconds later, I entered the room.
On the screen, I greeted Vanessa.
I started cleaning.
I had no idea anything unusual was happening.
Then Charles quietly left.
Vanessa watched him go.
And after he disappeared into the hallway...
She looked directly at the necklace box.
The screen froze.
Nobody spoke.
I felt my knees weaken.
Because suddenly, the memory of that night felt different.
I remembered Vanessa asking me to clean her room personally.
I remembered her insisting I leave my satchel near the door.
I remembered her saying:
"Don't touch anything on the desk.""
At the time, I thought she was just being arrogant.
Now I wondered if she had been planning something.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Explain.""
Vanessa laughed.
But this time, the confidence wasn't there.
"You're making assumptions.""
"No.""
Daniel pointed at the screen.
"I'm asking questions.""
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"Be careful, Daniel.""
The warning was subtle.
But everyone heard it.
Because Vanessa wasn't speaking like a guest anymore.
She was speaking like someone who believed she had power over him.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Where is Charles Whitmore now?""
Nobody answered.
The security manager checked his tablet.
"Mr. Whitmore left the estate approximately twenty minutes ago.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Convenient.""
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"You cannot accuse me because an employee entered my room.""
Daniel looked at her.
"I haven't accused you of anything.""
A pause.
"But I am asking why the necklace was given to Charles before it ended up inside Emily's bag.""
The room erupted with whispers.
I stood there frozen.
For the first time all night, someone was defending me.
Not because I was powerful.
Not because my last name mattered.
Because someone had actually looked at the evidence.
Vanessa turned toward me.
And something dangerous appeared in her eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
She knew the room was starting to question her.
So she changed tactics.
"Emily.""
My stomach tightened.
Vanessa walked toward me slowly.
"You really want these people to believe you?""
I said nothing.
She lowered her voice.
"Do you know what happens when someone like you goes against someone like me?""
Daniel immediately stepped between us.
"Enough.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You think you're protecting her?""
Daniel's expression remained calm.
"No.""
He glanced at me.
"I'm protecting the truth.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then a phone rang.
Everyone looked toward the sound.
It came from the security manager's desk.
He answered.
His face changed almost instantly.
"Mr. Hawthorne...""
Daniel looked over.
"What?""
The security manager swallowed.
"Someone just accessed the backup footage.""
A chill moved through the room.
"Who?""
The man looked down at the screen.
Then slowly raised his eyes.
"The access code belongs to...""
He stopped.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Say it.""
The security manager hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Emily Porter's employee account.""
Every eye turned toward me.
And I realized the night was not over.
Someone had just created new evidence.
May you like
And somehow...
They had made it look like I was the one hiding the truth.
