Chapter 2: The Evidence That Turned Against Me

The room changed the moment the security manager spoke those words.

"The access code belongs to Emily Porter's employee account.""

A second ago, I had felt the smallest spark of hope.

Now it disappeared.

The same people who had looked at me with suspicion before looked at me again.

Only this time, they looked even worse.

Because now there was a record.

A digital trail.

Something official.

Something that made it easier to believe I was guilty.

I stared at the security manager.

"No.""

My voice barely came out.

"I didn't access anything.""

The man avoided my eyes.

He wasn't cruel.

That almost made it worse.

He looked uncomfortable, like he wanted to believe me but couldn't ignore what was on his screen.

Daniel noticed.

"Show me.""

The security manager quickly handed him the tablet.

Daniel read through the information.

The entire foyer waited.

Even Vanessa.

Especially Vanessa.

Because unlike before, she no longer looked nervous.

She looked calm again.

Too calm.

"I told you," Vanessa said softly.

Nobody responded.

She continued.

"Sometimes people create distractions when they know they're caught.""

Her eyes moved toward me.

"Emily made a mistake.""

My stomach twisted.

"I didn't do anything.""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Then explain why your account accessed the security system.""

"I don't know.""

The answer sounded weak.

I hated that.

I hated standing there unable to prove something I knew was true.

Daniel continued scrolling.

"When was the access made?""

The security manager answered.

"Nine minutes ago.""

Daniel looked up.

"While we were watching the footage?""

"Yes.""

A strange silence followed.

Nine minutes ago.

That was when everyone had gathered in the foyer.

That was when Daniel had ordered the footage to be played.

That was when Vanessa realized the truth was coming out.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

And for the smallest second...

I saw it.

A tiny flicker of satisfaction.

Then it vanished.

Daniel noticed too.

"What are you thinking, Vanessa?""

She smiled.

"I’m thinking your employee is more complicated than you thought.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"She isn't my employee.""

The correction surprised everyone.

Including me.

Daniel looked at the crowd.

"Emily works for Hawthorne Estate Services. She is not my personal employee.""

It was a small distinction.

But somehow, it mattered.

Because he was reminding everyone that she wasn't someone under his protection because of favoritism.

He was saying he was looking at facts.

Daniel turned to the security manager.

"Can employee accounts access security footage?""

The man shook his head.

"No. Only authorized personnel.""

"Then why does her account appear?""

The security manager hesitated.

"Because...""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Because someone used her credentials.""

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning the account could have been logged in from another device.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"But the account belongs to her.""

Daniel turned.

"That doesn't mean she used it.""

Vanessa laughed quietly.

"You are defending her without knowing her.""

Daniel looked at her.

"No.""

His voice became colder.

"I'm questioning you because the evidence keeps changing.""

That sentence landed harder than any accusation.

Because everyone understood.

The evidence wasn't proving one simple story anymore.

There were too many pieces that didn't fit.

I looked at the security footage still frozen on the large screen.

My own face stared back at me.

Me entering Vanessa's room.

Me standing near the necklace.

Me being framed perfectly.

A thought suddenly hit me.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at me.

I swallowed.

"The camera.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"What about it?""

I pointed at the screen.

"That footage.""

I stepped closer.

"Can you rewind?""

The security manager looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because something is wrong.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Of course something is wrong now.""

I ignored her.

I kept looking at the screen.

"I cleaned that room for almost twenty minutes.""

Daniel watched me carefully.

"Go on.""

"But the footage only shows me near the necklace for a few seconds.""

The security manager checked.

I continued.

"Where is the rest?""

Nobody answered.

Because they realized it too.

The footage had skipped.

Not completely.

Not obviously.

Just enough.

A few seconds missing.

A few seconds that could change everything.

Daniel looked at the security manager.

"Check the original file.""

The man immediately started typing.

His fingers moved faster.

Then slower.

His face changed.

"What?""

Daniel asked.

The security manager looked up.

"The file has been edited.""

The room exploded.

Guests began talking over each other.

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"That's impossible.""

The security manager shook his head.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Vance, but it has been altered.""

Daniel stared at him.

"How much?""

"Approximately forty-three seconds were removed.""

Forty-three seconds.

That was enough.

More than enough.

Daniel turned back to Vanessa.

"Why were forty-three seconds removed from the footage of your room?""

Vanessa looked offended.

"Why are you asking me?""

"Because it happened in your room.""

"That doesn't mean I did it.""

Daniel said nothing.

And somehow, that silence was more powerful than an accusation.

Vanessa looked around.

She realized the room wasn't completely on her side anymore.

So she did what powerful people always did when control started slipping.

She attacked something easier.

Me.

"Let's not forget something.""

Her voice cut through the whispers.

"This woman still had the necklace in her bag.""

The room became quiet again.

She pointed at my satchel.

"Edited footage doesn't change that.""

She was right.

At least partly.

The necklace was still found in my bag.

And everyone knew it.

Daniel looked down.

That was the one piece of evidence nobody had explained.

I felt my confidence disappear again.

Because how could I explain something I couldn't understand myself?

Then I remembered something.

A tiny detail.

Something so ordinary I almost forgot it.

"The zipper.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What?""

"My bag.""

I walked toward the satchel on the floor.

"The zipper.""

Vanessa frowned.

"What about it?""

I picked it up carefully.

"My zipper was broken.""

The security manager looked confused.

"So?""

I opened the bag.

"Every morning, I have to tie it because it doesn't close properly.""

I pointed.

"But tonight...""

My hand trembled.

"The zipper was working.""

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You're saying someone repaired it?""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Someone replaced it.""

I looked inside.

The lining.

The stitching.

Something felt wrong.

I had carried that bag for four years.

It was old.

Worn.

Familiar.

But now...

The inside pocket looked slightly different.

Daniel noticed.

"Give it to me.""

I handed him the bag.

He examined the stitching carefully.

Then he looked at the security manager.

"Can you test this?""

The man nodded.

"For fingerprints?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel saw it.

So did I.

Because Vanessa suddenly wasn't angry anymore.

She was worried.

She took a step back.

"You are turning this into something it isn't.""

Daniel didn't look away from her.

"Am I?""

The security manager carefully inspected the bag.

Then he stopped.

His eyebrows pulled together.

"Mr. Hawthorne.""

Daniel looked over.

"What?""

The man's voice lowered.

"There is something inside the lining.""

The entire room froze.

He carefully cut open a small section of the inner fabric.

Something slipped out.

A tiny black device.

Not a camera.

Not a tracker.

A recording device.

A hidden microphone.

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Daniel stared at it.

Then slowly looked at Vanessa.

Because suddenly the question was no longer:

Who stole the necklace?

The question was:

Why was someone secretly recording Vanessa Vance's room?

And when the security manager activated the device...

May you like

The first words that came from the hidden recording made Vanessa completely lose her composure.

"Charles... if this plan fails, we both go to prison.""
