Chapter 6: The Forged Confession
The sentence on the screen burned into my mind.
"I planned this theft because I believed I deserved the Hawthorne fortune.""
For a few seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
The words were familiar.
The signature was familiar.
But they weren't mine.
I had written my name thousands of times.
On employment forms.
On rent checks.
On birthday cards.
On documents my mother kept carefully organized in an old wooden box.
I knew my own handwriting.
And this was not it.
"This is fake.""
My voice sounded distant.
The security manager looked uncomfortable.
"I understand why you would say that.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"I mean it is fake.""
Daniel took the phone from him.
He studied the document carefully.
The room waited.
Vanessa stood quietly near the staircase.
Too quietly.
That bothered me.
Because earlier, she had fought every accusation.
Now she was letting the evidence speak for her.
Daniel looked at the security manager.
"Where did this come from?""
The man answered.
"An anonymous email sent to the Hawthorne security department.""
"When?""
"Ten minutes ago.""
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
"The police are already here because of an anonymous email?""
The security manager nodded.
"It was marked urgent. It included the confession, the necklace photos, and instructions to contact law enforcement immediately.""
Richard's expression darkened.
"This was planned.""
Daniel agreed.
"Yes.""
His eyes moved to me.
"Someone wanted the police involved before we could uncover the truth.""
My hands shook.
Because I knew what that meant.
Whoever was behind this didn't just want me embarrassed.
They wanted me arrested.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That was enough.
Daniel noticed.
"Vanessa.""
She slowly turned.
"What?""
"Did you send the email?""
Her face showed offense.
"Absolutely not.""
"Then why aren't you surprised?""
The question hit harder than an accusation.
Vanessa's lips parted.
Then she recovered.
"I already knew this situation would become complicated.""
Daniel stared at her.
"No.""
His voice was cold.
"You knew exactly what was coming.""
Before Vanessa could answer, the front doors opened.
Two officers entered the foyer.
The entire atmosphere changed.
The guests moved aside.
The luxury.
The wealth.
The status.
None of it mattered anymore.
The law had entered the room.
One of the officers approached.
"Emily Porter?""
My heart sank.
"Yes.""
He looked at the document.
"Are you aware of why we are here?""
I swallowed.
"I was accused of stealing a necklace.""
The officer nodded.
"We received evidence suggesting you confessed.""
"I didn't.""
The officer studied my face.
Not accusing.
Just observing.
"I understand. We need to ask you some questions.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Before that happens, you should know the evidence has been compromised.""
The officer looked at him.
"And you are?""
"Daniel Hawthorne.""
The officer recognized the name but remained professional.
"We still have to investigate.""
"I understand.""
Daniel pointed toward the security system.
"But the original footage was edited. The confession was fabricated. And we have evidence showing someone framed her.""
The officer looked surprised.
"You have proof?""
The security manager nodded.
"We have a hidden recording device recovered from Ms. Porter's bag.""
The officer looked at me.
"Your bag?""
I nodded.
"Someone planted it.""
The officer turned to his partner.
"Secure everything.""
As they began collecting evidence, Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Officer.""
Everyone looked at her.
She walked forward.
"Can I provide some information?""
Daniel's expression changed immediately.
"No.""
The officer looked between them.
"Let her speak.""
Vanessa smiled slightly.
"I believe Emily may have been under financial pressure.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
Vanessa continued.
"She worked here for years. She knew the value of everything inside this mansion.""
The officer listened.
"I never stole anything.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I didn't say you did.""
Her voice became softer.
"I said you had access.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Enough.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Why are you protecting her?""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Because the evidence points away from her.""
"No.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Because she is Richard's daughter.""
The room went silent again.
The officer looked confused.
"Is that true?""
Richard stepped forward.
"Yes.""
The officer looked at me.
"Miss Porter, did you know this before tonight?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Vanessa smiled.
"There you have it.""
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"She discovers she is connected to a fortune worth millions, and suddenly a valuable necklace appears in her bag.""
My chest tightened.
Because I knew what she was doing.
She was building the story.
Making it simple.
Making it believable.
The poor worker.
The unexpected inheritance.
The stolen necklace.
It was a story people wanted to believe.
Daniel looked furious.
"You're twisting facts.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"Am I?""
She turned toward the officer.
"Ask yourself why someone would plant evidence in her bag.""
The officer frowned.
"Meaning?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Meaning someone wanted her to look guilty.""
A pause.
Then she smiled.
"Maybe because she wasn't supposed to get caught.""
The room reacted.
Even though it was a lie.
It sounded convincing.
That was Vanessa's talent.
She didn't need to prove something.
She only needed to create doubt.
I looked at Richard.
He looked devastated.
"I should have told you sooner.""
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn't know what else to do.
"You should have told me everything.""
Richard lowered his head.
"I know.""
The officer interrupted.
"We need to verify all claims before making any decisions.""
Daniel nodded.
"Good.""
The officer looked at the security manager.
"We need copies of all footage.""
"Of course.""
"And the device.""
The manager handed it over.
As the officer examined it, he suddenly paused.
"Wait.""
Everyone looked over.
"What?""
He turned the device around.
"There is another file.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What file?""
The officer opened it.
A video appeared.
Not audio.
A video.
The screen showed a hallway.
Not the library.
Not Vanessa's room.
A private corridor near Richard's office.
The timestamp showed:
Six months earlier.
Everyone watched.
A younger version of Vanessa appeared.
She was talking to someone.
Someone whose face was hidden.
Then the person turned slightly.
My blood froze.
Because I recognized the voice before I saw the face.
The hidden person said:
"Once Emily is blamed for the necklace, Richard will finally understand that keeping her alive in this family was a mistake.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Who is that?""
The video continued.
The person stepped into the light.
The entire room gasped.
Because the person standing beside Vanessa was not Charles.
It wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't someone outside the family.
It was someone everyone trusted.
Daniel whispered:
"No...""
The video revealed the face.
And Daniel's expression completely broke.
May you like
Because the person helping Vanessa destroy me...
Was his own mother.
