Chapter 1: The Necklace Accusation

The first sound anyone remembered from the Hawthorne Estate charity gala was not the orchestra.

It was the slap.

The sharp crack of Vanessa Vance’s palm against my cheek exploded through the marble foyer like a gunshot.

For a moment, the entire room stopped breathing.

The crystal chandeliers above us continued to glow, the violinists continued holding their bows in frozen confusion, and dozens of wealthy guests in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos stared at me as if they had just watched a servant commit the greatest crime imaginable.

I stumbled backward.

My shoulder struck the polished wooden railing of the grand staircase, and my hand immediately flew to my face.

The pain came quickly.

Hot.

Burning.

Embarrassing.

A bright red mark was already spreading across my cheek.

But the pain in my skin was nothing compared to the humiliation crushing my chest.

Because I knew every person in that room believed I was a thief.

And the woman standing in front of me had made sure they did.

"You stole from my family," Vanessa Vance announced, her voice carrying across the enormous foyer.

She didn't sound angry.

She sounded victorious.

Vanessa stood beneath the golden glow of the chandelier wearing a custom black silk gown that probably cost more than my yearly salary. Her diamond earrings sparkled as brightly as her smile.

A smile that didn't belong on someone's face after they had just destroyed another person's reputation.

Her perfectly manicured finger pointed directly at me.

"My grandmother's necklace was inside my coat," she said.

"An eighty-thousand-dollar family heirloom. And somehow, after you cleaned my room, it disappeared.""

The room remained silent.

Nobody asked questions.

Nobody wondered why a young housekeeper with no history of trouble would suddenly steal an expensive necklace in the middle of one of the most heavily secured events in the city.

They simply looked at my uniform.

My plain black shoes.

My old leather satchel sitting on the floor beside me.

And they decided.

Guilty.

My name is Emily Porter.

I was twenty-four years old that autumn night, and I had worked at Hawthorne Estate for almost three years.

I cleaned guest rooms.

I polished antique furniture.

I arranged flowers before important dinners.

I knew every hallway, every staircase, and every hidden corner of the historic mansion better than most of the people who owned it.

But to everyone standing in that foyer, I wasn't Emily.

I was just the housekeeper.

The easiest person to blame.

Vanessa took a step closer.

"You should be ashamed.""

My throat tightened.

"I didn't take anything.""

My voice came out quieter than I wanted.

Vanessa laughed softly.

It was the kind of laugh someone gave when they believed the outcome was already decided.

"Really?""

She looked around the room.

"Everyone here knows exactly how these things happen. People like you see something valuable, and they think they deserve it.""

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Others whispered.

I heard pieces of their conversations.

"How disappointing.""

"I knew something like this would happen eventually.""

"Security should have checked the staff.""

Each word felt heavier than the last.

I looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

Hundreds of people had arrived that evening for the Hawthorne Foundation's annual autumn charity gala. Business executives. Politicians. Old-money families whose names appeared on buildings across the city.

The Hawthorne Estate wasn't just a mansion.

It was a symbol.

And tonight, I had become the entertainment.

Vanessa reached down and picked up my worn brown leather satchel.

"This was found near my room.""

She opened it dramatically.

Inside were my cleaning gloves, a small notebook, a few personal items, and—

A flash of silver and white light.

The room gasped.

Because resting against the black fabric lining was a diamond necklace.

Vanessa held it up.

The enormous gemstone reflected the chandelier lights.

"There it is.""

Her voice became softer.

Almost satisfied.

"My grandmother's necklace.""

My entire body went cold.

"No.""

The word escaped before I could stop it.

I stepped forward.

"I don't know how that got there.""

Vanessa immediately pulled the necklace away.

"Don't come any closer.""

Her tone made me feel dangerous.

Like I was the criminal.

Not her.

"I swear," I whispered.

"I didn't take it.""

Vanessa looked at me with complete confidence.

"Of course you would say that.""

I searched the crowd desperately.

Somebody had to see something.

Someone had to understand.

But the faces staring back at me were strangers.

Except one.

Daniel Hawthorne.

He stood near the edge of the staircase, slightly separated from the crowd.

Unlike everyone else, he wasn't looking at the necklace.

He was looking at Vanessa.

Daniel was the only son of Richard Hawthorne, owner of the Hawthorne shipping empire and one of the most powerful businessmen in the country.

People called him cold.

Unreachable.

A man who could walk into a boardroom and silence twenty executives with one sentence.

But right now, his expression wasn't cold.

It was suspicious.

Vanessa noticed him.

"Daniel, you understand the situation, don't you?""

She turned toward him.

"This woman stole from your family's estate.""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved from Vanessa.

To me.

Then to the necklace.

Finally, he looked at the security cameras mounted in the corners of the foyer.

"Enough.""

His voice wasn't loud.

But everyone heard it.

The room went silent.

Daniel walked forward.

"Nobody calls the police.""

Vanessa frowned.

"What?""

He stopped beside me.

"Play the security footage.""

A ripple moved through the crowd.

Vanessa's confident expression shifted for the first time.

"Daniel, there is no reason to embarrass everyone with a pointless investigation.""

"Actually," Daniel replied calmly, "there is every reason.""

He looked directly at her.

"Because if Emily stole that necklace, the cameras will prove it.""

A pause.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"And if she didn't...""

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked toward the security manager standing near the ballroom doors.

"Bring up the footage.""

The large screen above the entrance flickered on.

Everyone turned.

Including Vanessa.

The first camera angle showed the second-floor hallway outside Vanessa's private guest suite.

The timestamp appeared.

8:17 PM.

Vanessa stood beside the screen, arms crossed.

"Fine," she said.

"Let's watch.""

The footage began.

Emily Porter entered the hallway carrying her cleaning supplies.

She opened Vanessa's door.

She walked inside.

Several guests murmured.

"There.""

Vanessa smiled.

But Daniel didn't.

Because ten seconds later, something unexpected happened.

On the screen, Emily suddenly stopped.

Her expression changed.

She looked toward the doorway.

Then someone else entered the room.

Someone who was not supposed to be there.

The entire foyer became silent.

Because the person appearing behind Emily was someone Vanessa had never mentioned.

And when Daniel saw the face on the security footage, his expression changed completely.

"Stop the video.""

His voice was colder than before.

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel stared at the frozen image.

Then slowly looked at Vanessa.

"Why was my father’s private assistant inside your room tonight?""

Vanessa's face lost its color.

May you like

And for the first time that evening...

She looked afraid.
