Chapter 3: The Voice Hidden Inside the Bag
The recording played through the security manager’s small device.
At first, there was only static.
A faint crackle.
A few seconds of silence.
Then a voice.
A voice every person in the Hawthorne foyer recognized.
Vanessa Vance.
"Charles... if this plan fails, we both go to prison.""
The room stopped breathing.
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
Because those words changed everything.
The necklace.
The accusation.
The missing footage.
The security access.
None of it was random anymore.
It was a plan.
A real plan.
And somehow, I had been placed right in the center of it.
Vanessa moved first.
She stepped forward quickly.
"Turn that off.""
The security manager looked at Daniel.
Daniel didn't even glance at her.
"Keep playing.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Daniel, you have no idea what you are listening to.""
"No.""
His eyes stayed on the device.
"But I intend to find out.""
The recording continued.
There was movement in the background.
A door closing.
Then Charles Whitmore’s voice.
"You said everything would be handled.""
Vanessa answered immediately.
"I said it would work if you followed instructions.""
Charles sounded nervous.
"What if someone checks the cameras?""
A pause.
Then Vanessa laughed.
A cold, careless laugh.
"The staff won't matter. Nobody believes them over us.""
My chest tightened.
Those words hurt more than the slap.
Because they confirmed what I had already felt all night.
They never saw me as a person.
They saw me as someone disposable.
Someone whose voice could be ignored.
The recording continued.
Charles lowered his voice.
"What about the necklace?""
Vanessa replied.
"Emily will take the blame.""
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Several guests turned toward me.
But this time, they weren't looking at me like a thief.
They were looking at me like someone who had been betrayed.
The recording kept playing.
"Her bag?"" Charles asked.
"Already handled.""
"You're sure?""
"Completely.""
I covered my mouth.
The room spun slightly.
Because that was the answer.
That was the missing piece.
Someone had planted the necklace.
Someone had opened my bag.
Someone had used my account.
Someone had planned to destroy my life in one night.
The recording suddenly stopped.
The security manager looked down.
"The battery died.""
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stood completely still.
His expression was unreadable.
That was what made him intimidating.
Most people showed anger.
Daniel didn't.
He became quieter.
And somehow that was worse.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Explain.""
Vanessa looked around.
Her confidence was gone.
But she wasn't defeated.
Not yet.
"You are making a mistake.""
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"I heard your voice.""
"You heard part of a conversation.""
"A conversation about framing Emily.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. A conversation taken out of context.""
Several guests exchanged uncertain looks.
Vanessa immediately grabbed onto that uncertainty.
"Everyone here knows how dangerous edited recordings can be.""
She pointed at the device.
"We don't even know when that was recorded.""
Daniel looked at the security manager.
"Can you determine the date?""
The man connected the device to his tablet.
A few seconds passed.
Then he looked up.
"The recording was made tonight.""
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"That proves nothing.""
Daniel continued.
"Can you identify the location?""
The security manager hesitated.
"Possibly.""
He played a short section again.
This time, he increased the background audio.
A faint sound appeared.
A grandfather clock.
Everyone looked confused.
Except Daniel.
Because he knew the Hawthorne Estate better than anyone.
"That clock.""
He looked toward the hallway.
"The old library.""
The room became silent.
The Hawthorne library was one of the oldest rooms in the mansion.
Private.
Usually locked during events.
Only family members and senior executives had access.
Daniel looked at the security team.
"Who entered the library tonight?""
The manager checked the records.
His face changed.
"Mr. Hawthorne...""
"Who?""
He swallowed.
"Vanessa Vance.""
The whispers returned.
Louder this time.
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"That's ridiculous. I went there because I needed a quiet place to make a phone call.""
Daniel looked at her.
"With Charles?""
"No.""
The answer came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then why does his access card appear three minutes after yours?""
Vanessa had no response.
For the first time all evening, the woman who had controlled the room looked trapped.
But then she looked at me.
And something changed.
She wasn't afraid of Daniel.
She was afraid of me.
Because I had become the person who could destroy everything she built.
She walked toward me slowly.
"Emily.""
Daniel immediately moved.
"Don't.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"You think this makes you innocent?""
I stared at her.
"I am innocent.""
She smiled faintly.
"No.""
Her voice lowered.
"You just don't understand what is happening.""
A chill moved through me.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at the crowd.
Then back at me.
"Do you really think Charles and I planned this alone?""
Daniel's eyes sharpened.
"Vanessa.""
But she continued.
"You think one necklace is worth risking everything?""
The room went silent.
Because that was the first thing Vanessa had said all night that sounded like fear.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who else was involved?""
Vanessa laughed.
But it sounded forced.
"You'll find out.""
"Who?""
She looked at him.
Then at me.
And smiled.
A terrible, confident smile.
"Ask Emily why someone wanted her inside that mansion tonight.""
My blood went cold.
"What?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the entrance.
The large wooden doors of the foyer suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Expensively dressed.
His face was familiar.
Because I had seen his picture hanging throughout the estate.
Richard Hawthorne.
Daniel's father.
The owner of the Hawthorne shipping empire.
The man who was supposed to be away on a business trip.
The room immediately changed.
Everyone straightened.
Everyone became nervous.
Richard walked slowly into the foyer.
His eyes moved across the crowd.
The necklace.
The security device.
Vanessa.
Then finally...
Me.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
My heart stopped.
Because Richard Hawthorne was looking at me like he had known me long before tonight.
Daniel noticed.
"Father.""
Richard ignored him.
He kept staring at me.
Then he said something that made the entire room freeze.
"Emily Porter.""
My name sounded different coming from him.
Like a secret.
Like something buried for years.
Richard took another step forward.
"I never thought I would see you standing in this house.""
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because I had never met Richard Hawthorne before.
At least...
I thought I hadn't.
Daniel looked between us.
"Father, what are you talking about?""
Richard didn't answer.
His eyes stayed locked on mine.
Then he reached inside his coat.
And pulled out an old photograph.
A faded photograph.
One I had seen only once in my entire life.
My mother's old belongings.
A picture she kept hidden until the day she died.
Richard placed it on the table.
My hands started shaking.
Because in the photograph was a young Richard Hawthorne.
Standing beside a woman I recognized instantly.
My mother.
And between them...
Was a baby.
Me.
The room went completely silent.
Richard whispered:
"Emily, there is something you were never told about your past.""
He looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"You're not just the housekeeper.""
May you like
A pause.
"You are my daughter.""
