Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Hawthorne Name

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

It felt as if the entire Hawthorne Estate had been frozen in time.

The orchestra in the ballroom had stopped playing.

The champagne glasses remained untouched on silver trays.

The guests who had arrived expecting an elegant evening of charity and celebration were now standing in the middle of a family secret that had been buried for decades.

And I was standing at the center of it.

My entire life had changed twice in one night.

First, I discovered that Richard Hawthorne was my father.

Then I discovered that someone had spent years making sure I never found out.

I looked at Richard.

He looked older than he had moments ago.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like a man who had just watched every lie he built collapse in front of him.

"That recording is fake.""

His voice was quiet.

Not angry.

Desperate.

Vanessa immediately nodded.

"Of course it is.""

She turned toward the guests.

"This is exactly what I warned everyone about. Someone is manipulating evidence.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You just admitted the recording exists.""

Vanessa paused.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

Everyone noticed.

"I said someone manipulated it.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then why does your voice appear on it?""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

She didn't answer.

I looked at the recording device sitting on the table.

My mind was racing.

The necklace.

The hidden microphone.

The fake footage.

My identity.

Everything was connected.

But one question kept repeating.

Why me?

Why would Vanessa care so much about destroying someone she barely knew?

I turned to her.

"How long have you known?""

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time, she didn't look like the powerful heiress everyone feared.

She looked like someone caught in a trap.

"Known what?""

"That I was Richard's daughter.""

Her silence answered before her words did.

My chest tightened.

"You knew.""

Vanessa looked away.

That small movement hurt more than an admission.

"You knew.""

My voice grew stronger.

"And you still let everyone believe I was a thief.""

Vanessa finally looked back at me.

Her expression changed.

The mask disappeared.

"You have no idea what you walked into.""

I stared at her.

"Then explain.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Explain?""

She looked around the room.

"Do you think people like us get to keep anything without fighting for it?""

Daniel frowned.

"People like us?""

Vanessa ignored him.

"Your entire life, you thought you were invisible.""

She stepped closer.

"But you weren't.""

Her voice lowered.

"You were the biggest threat in this family.""

My heart pounded.

"I never wanted anything from the Hawthornes.""

"That's exactly why you were dangerous.""

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa continued.

"Everyone in this room knows Richard has a son.""

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

"The future heir.""

Daniel's face remained emotionless.

"But nobody knew Richard had another child.""

She looked at me.

"A daughter.""

I felt Daniel watching me.

I looked at him.

The idea that I could somehow threaten his position made me uncomfortable.

"I don't want his company.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Emily—"

I turned toward him.

"Do you understand what this looks like?""

My voice shook.

"I spent my entire life believing I was nobody. Then tonight I find out I'm connected to one of the richest families in the country.""

I pointed toward the recording.

"And now I discover people were hiding me because of money.""

Richard looked hurt.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

He didn't answer.

That silence scared me.

Daniel noticed.

"Father.""

Richard looked at him.

"What happened twenty-four years ago?""

Richard remained quiet.

Then finally...

He told the truth.

"Your grandfather.""

Everyone became still.

Richard looked at the floor.

"My father controlled everything. The company. The family. Every decision.""

His hands tightened.

"When he found out Emily existed, he believed she threatened the Hawthorne legacy.""

I swallowed.

"What did he do?""

Richard looked at me.

"He tried to erase your mother's connection to this family.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How?""

Richard hesitated.

"Money. Threats. Influence.""

My eyes burned.

"My mother never told me.""

"Because she wanted to protect you.""

Richard looked at me.

"She wanted you to grow up without the Hawthorne name controlling your life.""

For the first time that night, I understood something.

My mother wasn't ashamed of me.

She was protecting me.

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

"This emotional reunion is touching.""

Everyone looked at her.

"But it doesn't change the truth.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What truth?""

She smiled.

"The inheritance.""

A silence followed.

Richard's face changed.

Daniel noticed.

"What inheritance?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Tell them.""

I looked at Richard.

"Tell me what?""

Richard closed his eyes.

I had never seen him look so defeated.

"Emily...""

My voice became sharper.

"What inheritance?""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Father.""

Richard finally answered.

"When my father died, he left instructions.""

"Instructions for what?""

Richard looked at me.

"The Hawthorne estate and a portion of the family trust were placed under conditions.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Say it.""

Richard ignored her.

"The conditions stated that if I ever acknowledged my first child...""

He stopped.

I waited.

"That child would receive a share equal to Daniel's.""

The room exploded.

Guests whispered.

Daniel looked shocked.

Even he hadn't known.

I stared at Richard.

"So that's why.""

Richard looked at me.

"No.""

"But it is.""

I shook my head.

"Vanessa didn't want me because of a necklace.""

My voice became quieter.

"She wanted me gone because I exist.""

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Vanessa's face hardened.

"I wanted to protect this family.""

Daniel looked at her.

"By framing an innocent woman?""

"By preventing chaos.""

"You created chaos.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Because you don't understand what happens when someone unexpected enters a powerful family.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Someone unexpected?""

He glanced at me.

"She's your sister.""

The word hung in the air.

Sister.

A word I had never imagined hearing.

Then suddenly...

The security manager's phone rang.

He answered quickly.

"Hello?""

His expression changed.

"You're sure?""

Daniel noticed.

"What happened?""

The man covered the phone.

"Mr. Hawthorne...""

He looked at Richard.

"The police just arrived outside.""

Everyone reacted.

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

The security manager swallowed.

"They received a report.""

"From who?""

The man looked down at the screen.

Then slowly answered.

"The report says Emily Porter confessed to stealing the necklace.""

My heart dropped.

"What?""

The security manager looked at me.

"The message includes a signed statement.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Signed by who?""

The man hesitated.

Then showed him the screen.

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

Because at the bottom of the document...

Was my signature.

A signature I had never written.

May you like

And beneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

"I planned this theft because I believed I deserved the Hawthorne fortune.""
