Chapter 8: The Betrayal Nobody Expected
Adrian replayed the recording three times.
Every time, the same sentence.
Elena... why are you here?
The woman standing across from him looked broken.
But not surprised.
"You knew.""
Adrian's voice was barely controlled.
Elena looked down.
"I knew Claire was suspicious.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"You think I hurt her.""
"I don't know what to think.""
And that was the truth.
For the first time in his life, Adrian didn't know who deserved his trust.
Not Vanya.
Not Elena.
Maybe not even his own memories.
Elena sat down.
"I didn't hurt Claire.""
"Then explain.""
She covered her face.
"I went to see her that night because she called me.""
"Why?""
"Because she found something.""
"What?""
Elena looked at him.
"Something about Lila's birth.""
Adrian froze.
"What?""
"Claire discovered information about Lila's biological family.""
"My family?""
"No.""
Elena shook her head.
"Someone else.""
When Adrian returned home, Lila was asleep.
He stood in the doorway watching her.
Every secret seemed to lead back to the same place.
His daughter.
He wondered how many adults had made decisions around her without considering how much she understood.
A soft voice came from behind him.
"Daddy?""
He turned.
Lila stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.
"You look sad.""
He knelt.
"I'm okay.""
She shook her head.
"No, you're not.""
The honesty surprised him.
"How do you know?""
"Because Mommy used to look like that.""
His heart stopped.
"What do you mean?""
"When she was scared.""
Adrian gently touched her hair.
"What did Mommy tell you?""
Lila looked down.
"She said if people fight over money, I should remember something.""
"What?""
The little girl whispered:
"That I'm not the prize.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
Because Claire had understood.
The people around them saw Lila as something connected to wealth.
A name.
An inheritance.
A problem.
But Claire saw what Adrian should have always seen.
A child.
The next morning, Adrian made a decision.
He contacted investigators.
He froze Vanya's access to company accounts.
He started legal proceedings.
And then he received an unexpected visitor.
Marcus Vale.
The man from the photos.
He walked into Adrian's office without fear.
"Mr. Oleso.""
Adrian stood.
"How did you get in?""
Marcus smiled.
"Your security is not as good as your business.""
"What do you want?""
Marcus placed a folder on the desk.
"To help you.""
Adrian laughed.
"After working with my wife?""
Marcus didn't react.
"Your wife betrayed you.""
"And you didn't?""
"I made mistakes.""
"Convenient.""
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
Taken the week before her death.
Adrian looked closer.
She was standing with someone.
Someone he recognized.
His blood turned cold.
Because the person beside Claire was not Vanya.
Not Marcus.
Not Elena.
May you like
It was someone Adrian thought was impossible.
His own father.
