Chapter 5: The Truth Written in Ink
Adrian stared at the document for several seconds.
The words blurred.
Not because he couldn't read them.
Because he didn't want to.
The paper claimed Claire had created a private trust for Lila.
A trust Adrian had never known existed.
And the person named as temporary guardian was not him.
It was Elena.
His sister-in-law.
"Why would Claire do this?"" Adrian whispered.
Vanya's voice softened.
"Maybe she knew something about you.""
He looked up sharply.
"What does that mean?""
"Maybe she thought you were too busy.""
The cruelest part was that it worked.
Because Adrian knew there was truth hidden inside the lie.
He had been busy.
Too busy.
When Claire was sick, he worked more.
When Lila cried, he hired help.
When problems appeared, he solved them with money.
Except money couldn't hug a child.
Money couldn't notice fear.
Money couldn't replace a father.
But something about the document bothered him.
A date.
He looked closer.
"This was signed three months before Claire died.""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't Elena tell me?""
Vanya smiled.
"Maybe because she didn't want you to know.""
Adrian picked up his phone.
He called Elena.
She answered immediately.
"Did you find it?""
Adrian froze.
"Find what?""
Silence.
Then Elena whispered:
"So Vanya showed you.""
The room became quiet.
Adrian looked at Vanya.
"You knew she would show me?""
"Of course.""
Elena's voice grew urgent.
"Adrian, listen to me. Do not trust that document.""
He gripped the phone.
"Why?""
"Because it's incomplete.""
Vanya's face changed.
Just slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
"Where is the rest?""
Elena hesitated.
"With Claire's attorney.""
"Why?""
"Because Claire knew Vanya would try to use the first page against you.""
Adrian felt a chill.
"She knew about Vanya?""
"Yes.""
The word landed like a stone.
"Claire discovered Vanya had been investigating your finances before they even met.""
Adrian looked at his wife.
Vanya was no longer smiling.
"That's impossible.""
Elena's voice shook.
"Adrian, Claire spent her last weeks gathering evidence.""
"Evidence of what?""
Another pause.
Then Elena answered:
"That Vanya never wanted to marry you.""
Adrian looked at the woman standing across from him.
The woman who had spent months controlling his home.
Controlling his daughter.
Controlling the story.
Vanya suddenly moved.
She grabbed the document from his hand.
"This conversation is over.""
Adrian stepped back.
"No.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""
"I know exactly what I'm dealing with.""
"Do you?""
Her voice lowered.
"Because if you knew the truth about Lila's mother, you would understand why Claire didn't want her daughter with you.""
The sentence stopped him.
"What truth?""
Vanya smiled.
A dangerous smile.
"The truth that Claire discovered before she died.""
"What truth?""
Vanya walked toward the door.
Then she stopped.
"Ask her attorney.""
She opened the door.
"And ask him why Claire wrote one final letter.""
Adrian stared.
"What letter?""
Vanya looked back.
"The one addressed to Lila.""
The door closed.
Adrian stood alone.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
"Mr. Oleso?""
"Yes?""
"My name is Daniel Hayes. I was your wife's attorney.""
Adrian's heart raced.
"Why are you calling me?""
A pause.
Then the man said:
"Because I have the letter Claire wrote before she died.""
Adrian held his breath.
"And?""
The attorney's voice dropped.
"She wanted your daughter to read it when she turned eighteen.""
Another pause.
"But after what happened today...""
Adrian gripped the phone.
"What happened?""
May you like
The attorney answered:
"I think Lila needs to read it now.""
