Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Lila’s Arrival
The next morning, Adrian learned the truth.
Or at least, the first piece of it.
He sat across from Lila at the breakfast table.
This time, she had a full plate in front of her.
Fresh fruit.
Warm pancakes.
A glass of milk.
Simple things.
Things she should never have been afraid to ask for.
"You can eat," Adrian said gently.
Lila looked at him.
"Really?""
His heart broke.
"Really.""
She picked up her fork slowly.
As if waiting for someone to stop her.
No one did.
Maria stood nearby, quietly wiping tears.
For the first time in months, the house felt peaceful.
But Adrian couldn't forget Vanya's words.
Ask why your daughter was really sent to live with you.
After breakfast, he called his lawyer.
Then he called someone he had not spoken to in years.
Lila's aunt, Elena.
The woman answered after three rings.
"Adrian?""
"Elena, I need answers.""
A long silence.
"About Lila?""
"Yes.""
Elena sighed.
"I was wondering when you would finally ask.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
That sentence hurt.
"What aren't you telling me?""
Elena's voice became quiet.
"Your ex-wife didn't send Lila away because she didn't want her.""
Adrian froze.
"What?""
"She was sick, Adrian.""
His grip tightened around the phone.
"What are you talking about?""
"She knew she wasn't going to recover.""
The room spun.
Lila's mother, Claire, had died two years earlier.
Everyone told him she accepted the situation.
Everyone told him she wanted Lila with him.
But now Elena's voice cracked.
"Claire spent her final months trying to make sure Lila would be protected.""
Adrian whispered:
"Protected from what?""
A pause.
Then:
"From people who wanted your money.""
His eyes moved toward the staircase.
Toward the room where his daughter slept.
"Vanya?""
Elena didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
That afternoon, Adrian confronted Vanya.
She was packing a suitcase.
Not because she was leaving.
Because she was preparing for war.
"You knew about Claire.""
Vanya looked up.
"Excuse me?""
"You knew my first wife was dying.""
Vanya stayed silent.
"You knew Lila was vulnerable.""
"Adrian—"
"No.""
His voice was firm.
"You knew.""
Vanya slowly closed the suitcase.
"And?""
The word shocked him.
"And you married me anyway.""
"I loved you.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You loved my name.""
Vanya laughed.
"You really think Maria and some old family story changed everything?""
"You hurt my daughter.""
Vanya stepped closer.
"You don't know the whole story.""
"Then tell me.""
She stared at him.
Finally, she said:
"Lila isn't the innocent child you think she is.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Stop.""
"She has been lying to you.""
"About what?""
Vanya reached into her purse.
She pulled out a document.
"I found this in Claire's things.""
Adrian took it.
His face changed.
Because it was a legal document.
A document with Lila's name on it.
And a signature.
His dead wife's signature.
"What is this?""
May you like
Vanya smiled.
"Proof that Claire never trusted you.""
