Chapter 1: The Greeting That Changed Everything

The most terrifying moment of my marriage wasn't when I discovered my husband had lied to me. It was when I realized my own sister had been helping him do it.

And it started with a kiss that lasted barely two seconds.

Lauren walked through my front door on a rainy Saturday afternoon, carrying a bottle of expensive wine and wearing the same confident smile she'd worn since we were children.

She didn't look at me.

She didn't even say hello.

Instead, she walked straight toward my husband, Daniel, slipped one arm around his neck, and kissed his cheek.

Not an awkward family greeting.

Not a quick peck between relatives.

It was slow, familiar, and strangely intimate.

"Hey, you," she whispered.

Daniel smiled.

And that smile hurt more than the kiss.

I stood beside the front door, still holding my car keys, watching my younger sister behave like she belonged in my husband's arms.

"Did you just kiss my husband?""

Lauren turned around and laughed.

"Oh, Claire. Don't start.""

Daniel picked up the television remote and lowered the volume.

"Can we not do this today?""

I stared at him.

"Do what?""

"Turn something completely innocent into a problem.""

I slowly put my keys on the hallway table.

"Interesting. I haven't even explained why I'm upset, and you're already defending yourself.""

Lauren removed her boots and walked toward the kitchen.

"Honestly, you're exhausting sometimes.""

That was Lauren.

She had always been beautiful, charming, and completely comfortable making other people feel unreasonable.

Growing up, she could break something, blame me, and somehow end up receiving an apology.

My parents called her spirited.

I called her manipulative.

But I'd never imagined she would become the woman standing between me and my husband.

"Lauren," I said, following her into the kitchen.

"Why did you kiss him like that?""

She placed the wine bottle on the counter.

"Because I love him.""

My stomach tightened.

She laughed again.

"Relax. He's my brother-in-law. I'm allowed to love him.""

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

"Claire, she's joking.""

I looked directly at him.

"Then why aren't you laughing?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Because I've had a long week, and I don't want another argument.""

Another argument.

As if this had happened before.

I folded my arms.

"Lauren, you said you do that all the time. What exactly does that mean?""

She opened a kitchen cabinet and searched for a corkscrew.

"I mean we've always been affectionate.""

"Since when?""

"Since forever.""

"Since before Daniel and I got married?""

She stopped moving.

It was only a second.

But I noticed.

Daniel noticed too.

His eyes flicked toward her, and his jaw tightened.

Then Lauren turned around.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

I stepped closer.

"Answer me.""

She placed both hands on the counter.

"Fine. A few times. We've hugged.

We've kissed cheeks. It's not some scandal.""

"Where?""

"What?""

"Where have you been kissing him?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

I turned toward him.

"No. Actually, it isn't.""

His expression hardened.

"You are making your sister uncomfortable.""

I almost laughed.

My sister had just kissed my husband in front of me, and somehow I was the person making everyone uncomfortable.

Lauren sighed dramatically.

"Nothing happened, Claire.""

I went still.

"I never said anything happened.""

Her face changed.

The color drained from her cheeks.

Daniel looked down at the kitchen floor.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I heard myself ask the question that would destroy everything I thought I knew.

"Why would you say nothing happened if I never accused you of anything?""

Lauren picked up the wine bottle again.

Her fingers were trembling.

"Because I know how your mind works.""

"No. You know something I don't.""

Daniel grabbed his car keys from the counter.

"I'm going out.""

"You're not leaving.""

He stopped.

I had never spoken to him like that.

"Claire, move.""

I didn't.

"Tell me whether something happened between you two.""

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at Lauren.

That look was enough to make my knees feel weak.

Lauren suddenly burst into tears.

"Oh, my God. I can't believe we're doing this.""

Daniel moved toward her.

"Lauren, don't.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"No. I'm tired of pretending.""

My heart began pounding.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

She looked at Daniel, then back at me.

And with a voice so quiet I almost couldn't hear it, she said:

"Claire, you need to understand something. Daniel and I have been keeping a secret from you for a very long time.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"How long?""

Lauren swallowed.

"Before your wedding.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

And suddenly, five years of marriage felt like five minutes of carefully staged theater.

"Before our wedding?"" I whispered.

Lauren nodded.

Then she said something that made the blood drain from my face.

"Daniel didn't marry you because he fell in love with you, Claire.""

I turned toward my husband.

He didn't deny it.

He simply whispered:

"Lauren, please. Not yet.""

Not yet.

May you like

As if there were more.

As if the worst part hadn't even started.
