Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed
For two years, Adrian had carried one painful memory.
A phone call.
A hospital.
A doctor saying the words he never wanted to hear.
Claire was gone.
But now, everything was changing.
Because if Elena was telling the truth, then Claire's death wasn't the end of a tragedy.
It was the beginning of a secret.
"Where are you?"" Adrian demanded.
"At home.""
"I'm coming.""
"Adrian, don't.""
He stopped.
"Why?""
"Because if Vanya knows you are asking questions, she will move faster.""
Adrian looked toward the stairs.
Too late.
She already knew.
Vanya was not in the mansion.
That scared him more than if she had been.
People like Vanya didn't disappear because they were afraid.
They disappeared because they were planning.
Adrian checked every room.
Her clothes were gone.
Her jewelry box was empty.
Her office drawers had been cleaned.
She hadn't left.
She had prepared.
Maria stood behind him.
"Mr. Oleso?""
"She took everything.""
Maria looked worried.
"Should we call the police?""
Adrian looked at the empty room.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to know what she was hiding.""
Two hours later, Adrian arrived at Elena's house.
She opened the door immediately.
She looked exhausted.
"You shouldn't have come.""
"I needed answers.""
Elena stepped aside.
Inside the house was a folder sitting on the table.
Adrian stared.
"What is that?""
"The truth.""
He opened it.
Photos.
Documents.
Emails.
His face changed.
The first photo showed Vanya meeting someone.
A man Adrian didn't recognize.
The date was before their wedding.
The second showed bank records.
Large transfers.
The third showed a message.
A message from Vanya.
*Once Adrian signs everything over, the child will no longer be a problem.*
Adrian felt sick.
"Who is this man?""
Elena looked away.
"His name is Marcus Vale.""
"And?""
"He helped Vanya investigate your finances.""
"Why?""
"Because they were planning to control your company.""
Adrian looked through more documents.
Then he found something.
A hospital report.
Claire's name.
His hands froze.
"What is this?""
Elena sat down.
"Claire discovered them.""
"Discovered what?""
"That Vanya and Marcus were working together.""
Adrian's stomach dropped.
"When?""
"Before Claire died.""
The next document was a handwritten note from Claire.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
*If something happens to me, do not let Adrian believe he failed me. He needs to know I loved him.*
His vision blurred.
Then he read the next line.
*But he must understand that someone inside our family helped them.*
Inside our family.
Elena.
Adrian looked up.
"You.""
She closed her eyes.
"I made mistakes.""
The words were heavier than he expected.
"What did you do?""
"I trusted the wrong person.""
"Who?""
Elena looked toward the window.
"Claire's doctor.""
Adrian stared.
"What?""
"She believed someone was helping Claire.""
"Helping her?""
"Yes.""
Elena's voice shook.
"Claire was investigating why her medical records kept changing.""
Adrian went silent.
"Changing?""
"Someone was altering information.""
The room felt unreal.
His wife hadn't just been sick.
Someone had been interfering.
Someone had wanted control.
Then Elena whispered:
"Adrian, Claire left one more thing.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
His heartbeat increased.
"Where?""
Elena reached into the cabinet.
She pulled out a small device.
"She told me to only give this to you if Lila was in danger.""
Adrian took it.
His hands shook as he pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Claire's voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
"Adrian...""
He closed his eyes.
His wife.
Alive.
Speaking.
"If you are hearing this, something went wrong.""
A tear slipped down his face.
Claire continued.
"I need you to listen carefully.""
A pause.
Then:
"Do not trust the person who tells you they are protecting Lila.""
Adrian opened his eyes.
Because he suddenly understood.
Claire wasn't talking about Vanya.
The recording continued.
"The person who hurt us is closer than you think.""
Then a sound.
A door opening.
Claire's voice changed.
"Wait...""
The recording became distorted.
Then one final sentence.
A sentence that made Adrian stand frozen.
May you like
"Elena... why are you here?""
The recording stopped.
