Chapter 3: The Hidden Recordings

Adrian carried Lila to her bedroom himself.

He didn't let anyone else touch her.

Not the staff.

Not Vanya.

Not even Maria.

The little girl held onto his shirt like she was afraid he would disappear again.

"I should have come home sooner," he whispered.

Lila didn't answer.

She only rested her head against his shoulder.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

Because children who feel safe complain.

Children who feel afraid become quiet.

When Adrian finally placed her on the bed, he noticed something he had never noticed before.

A small lock on the outside of her bedroom door.

His face changed.

"What is this?""

Lila looked away.

"Nothing.""

"Lila.""

She hesitated.

"She said it was because I leave my toys everywhere.""

Adrian touched the lock.

His hand began shaking.

"You were locked in here?""

"No.""

A pause.

"Not all night.""

The words destroyed him.

Not all night.

As if that was somehow better.

He turned around.

Vanya was standing in the doorway.

"You are overreacting.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Overreacting?""

"Yes.""

She walked inside.

"You weren't here. You don't know how difficult it has been.""

"She is eight years old.""

"And she is manipulative.""

Adrian looked shocked.

"Don't call my daughter that.""

Vanya crossed her arms.

"She knows exactly how to make people feel sorry for her.""

From the hallway, Maria listened silently.

She had seen enough.

But she had more.

Much more.

She had spent months noticing things.

Missing food.

Lila's bruises from falling while playing alone.

The way the child flinched whenever Vanya raised her voice.

So Maria had started documenting.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she wanted proof.

That night, after Adrian left Lila's room, Maria approached him.

"Mr. Oleso.""

He looked exhausted.

"Not now, Maria.""

"I understand.""

She handed him a small envelope.

"What is this?""

"Something you need to see.""

Inside was a flash drive.

Adrian frowned.

"Where did you get this?""

"I recorded things.""

His eyes widened.

"You recorded my wife?""

"I recorded what happened in this house.""

For several moments, he said nothing.

Then he looked toward the living room.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

Maria looked down.

"Because I was afraid.""

The answer surprised him.

"Of what?""

She looked back up.

"That you would believe her.""

An hour later, Adrian sat alone in his office.

The mansion was silent.

He inserted the flash drive.

The first video appeared.

It showed the kitchen.

Vanya standing near the counter.

Lila standing in front of her.

"You think your father will choose you over me?""

Adrian's entire body went still.

The video continued.

"I didn't say anything.""

Lila's voice.

Small.

Afraid.

Vanya smiled.

"You don't need to say anything. Children like you always expose themselves eventually.""

Adrian covered his mouth.

Then another video.

And another.

Each one showed a different moment.

Vanya criticizing Lila.

Ignoring her.

Punishing her.

Making her apologize for things she didn't do.

Then came the final recording.

The one from earlier.

The bowl.

The rice.

The sentence.

"Then eat from there.""

Adrian stopped the video.

His eyes filled with tears.

He had spent years building companies.

Making deals.

Solving impossible problems.

But he had failed at the one thing that mattered.

Being a father.

A knock came at the door.

Vanya entered.

"Adrian.""

He looked at her.

For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Doubt.

"You recorded me?""

"No.""

Her face relaxed slightly.

Then he added:

"Maria did.""

Vanya's expression changed.

"You believe a maid over your wife?""

Adrian stood.

"I believe my eyes.""

Silence.

Then Vanya smiled.

But it wasn't fear.

It was calculation.

"You don't understand what you are doing.""

"Actually, I do.""

"No, Adrian.""

She stepped closer.

"If you leave me, you lose more than a marriage.""

He frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Vanya looked toward the hallway.

May you like

And then she said something that made his blood turn cold.

"Ask yourself why your daughter was really sent to live with you.""
