Chapter 2: The Woman Who Controlled the House

Maria couldn't move.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

The hallway felt colder than the marble beneath Lila's knees.

Vanya leaned against the wall, crossing her arms.

The smile on her face disappeared.

"Answer me.""

Maria forced herself to breathe.

"I was checking on Mr. Oleso's arrival time.""

A lie.

A weak one.

Vanya knew it.

Maria knew it.

The only person who didn't know was Lila, who was still staring at the bowl in confusion.

Vanya walked closer.

"You think I'm stupid?""

"No, ma'am.""

"You think you can walk around my house spying on me?""

Maria lowered her gaze.

"This is not about spying.""

Vanya laughed softly.

"Then what is it about?""

Maria looked toward Lila.

The little girl had stopped eating.

Her eyes moved between the two adults.

She could feel the danger.

Children always knew when a room became unsafe.

Vanya followed Maria's eyes.

"Oh.""

Her voice became sweet.

"You care about her.""

Maria said nothing.

"That's your mistake.""

The maid looked up.

"What?""

Vanya crouched slightly, lowering her voice.

"You've worked here long enough to understand how things work. You clean. You cook. You stay invisible.""

Her eyes hardened.

"You don't involve yourself in family matters.""

Maria's hands curled into fists.

"She is a child.""

Vanya smiled.

"And I am her stepmother.""

"That doesn't give you the right to humiliate her.""

The moment the words left Maria's mouth, she knew she had crossed a line.

Vanya's expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Confidence.

Because Vanya believed she was untouchable.

"My husband trusts me.""

Maria stared at her.

"Does he?""

The question hung between them.

For the first time, Vanya looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

"I know what I saw.""

"And what exactly did you see?""

Maria looked at Lila.

The little girl quietly wiped her face.

"I saw an eight-year-old child being punished for being hungry.""

Vanya stood straight.

"Careful.""

Maria felt her heartbeat racing.

But she didn't step back.

"No.""

Her voice shook.

"But someone needs to be.""

A sound came from the dining room.

Lila had dropped the bowl.

The metal hit the floor with a loud crash.

Everyone turned.

The little girl immediately started crying.

"I'm sorry.""

She dropped to her knees.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry...""

Maria rushed toward her.

"Sweetheart, don't.""

But Vanya stopped her.

"Leave her.""

Maria looked shocked.

"What?""

"She needs to learn.""

"Learn what?""

Vanya looked at Lila.

"That actions have consequences.""

Lila covered her face.

Maria knelt beside her anyway.

"You're okay.""

Vanya's voice sharpened.

"I said leave her.""

Maria ignored her.

For the first time since she started working there, she openly disobeyed Vanya.

And that terrified both of them.

Because Maria realized something.

She was no longer protecting her job.

She was protecting a child.

An hour later, Adrian Oleso's private plane landed.

He had ended a business trip three days early after Maria's call.

The entire flight home, one sentence repeated in his mind.

She made your daughter eat like an animal.

He tried to convince himself there had to be another explanation.

Maybe Maria misunderstood.

Maybe Lila exaggerated.

Maybe Vanya had lost her temper.

But deep down, another memory surfaced.

Lila sitting quietly at dinner.

Lila refusing dessert.

Lila looking afraid whenever Vanya entered the room.

Signs he had ignored.

Signs he had explained away.

When Adrian's car reached the mansion, he didn't wait for anyone to open the door.

He walked inside.

"Where is my daughter?""

The staff immediately became silent.

Maria stepped forward.

"Mr. Oleso.""

His face tightened.

"Where is she?""

"Upstairs.""

He looked toward the staircase.

Then he saw Vanya.

She was standing at the top step wearing a soft white dress.

Her expression was calm.

Almost prepared.

"Adrian," she said.

He looked at her.

"What happened?""

Vanya sighed.

"I was hoping Maria wouldn't make you worry.""

Maria's heart sank.

There it was.

The twist.

Before Adrian even heard the truth, Vanya was already controlling the story.

"What does that mean?""

Vanya walked down slowly.

"Lila had another episode today.""

Adrian frowned.

"Episode?""

"She became emotional. She refused to eat. She threw food. Maria became upset and misunderstood what happened.""

Maria stepped forward.

"That's not true.""

Vanya looked at her.

"Please don't interrupt.""

Adrian's eyes moved between them.

"Lila refused to eat?""

Maria shook her head.

"No. She was starving.""

Vanya immediately responded.

"See? This is exactly what I mean. Maria has become too attached.""

Adrian stared.

"Too attached?""

"She thinks she knows better than us.""

Maria felt anger rise.

"I know what I saw.""

Adrian looked at her.

"Maria.""

The warning in his voice hurt.

But she continued.

"Your daughter was eating rice from a dog bowl.""

The room went silent.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Vanya's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Maria noticed.

Adrian turned slowly toward his wife.

"Tell me she is lying.""

Vanya opened her mouth.

Nothing came out immediately.

And that tiny hesitation was enough.

Because Adrian had spent six months defending Vanya.

But he had never once seen her hesitate.

Then, from upstairs, a small voice called out.

"Daddy?""

Everyone looked up.

Lila stood at the top of the stairs.

Her eyes filled with fear.

Adrian's expression softened.

"Sweetheart.""

She gripped the railing.

"Are you mad at me?""

The question broke something inside him.

"No.""

He walked toward her.

"I could never be mad at you.""

But before he reached the stairs, Lila whispered something that made the entire house freeze.

"Daddy...""

May you like

She looked at Vanya.

"She said you wouldn't believe me.""
