Chapter 7: The Plan Beyond the Divorce

Daniel kept the phone against his ear.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared to.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

The accusation against me was never the real crime.

It was only the beginning.

Andrew's words stayed in the air.

"Ask her why she needed a fake affair accusation before she made her next move.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

His expression was no longer hurt.

It was something colder.

Recognition.

Like every missing piece had finally started falling into place.

"Vanessa.""

She didn't answer.

"Look at me.""

Slowly, she did.

"What was the next move?""

Her lips parted.

"I don't know what Andrew is talking about.""

Daniel gave a small, bitter laugh.

"That's your answer?""

She looked at him.

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Because it's the same thing you've said all night.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"You think you know everything now?""

"No.""

Daniel looked down at the papers.

"I think I know enough to know you planned something.""

She stepped back.

"I made mistakes.""

"You keep calling them mistakes.""

His voice hardened.

"But mistakes don't have dates. They don't have documents. They don't have backup plans.""

Vanessa looked away.

I watched her carefully.

There was something different about her now.

The confidence was gone.

But there was still calculation.

She was cornered.

And cornered people sometimes became more dangerous.

"Daniel," she said quietly, "you need to understand something.""

He waited.

"I was scared.""

He didn't react.

"I thought I was going to lose everything.""

"You mean your money?""

"No.""

"Your reputation?""

She stayed silent.

"Your new life with Marcus?""

Her face tightened.

There it was.

The truth she couldn't hide.

She wasn't afraid of losing Daniel.

She was afraid of losing what came after him.

I stepped closer.

"Why did you need me to look guilty?""

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

"Because nobody would question it.""

The honesty stunned me.

Even Daniel seemed surprised.

"What?""

She took a breath.

"I knew people would believe it.""

She looked at me.

"They always have.""

I felt my chest tighten.

Not because the words hurt.

Because they explained everything.

Vanessa had spent years studying how people saw me.

She knew exactly which version of me the world would accept.

The quiet sister.

The one who needed help.

The one who had nowhere else to go.

The perfect villain.

"You used me because I was convenient.""

Her expression didn't change.

"Yes.""

Daniel stared at her.

"How can you say that?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Because it worked.""

Silence.

The cruelty of the answer was worse than anger.

She didn't regret the plan.

She regretted that she got caught.

Daniel stepped away.

"Who else knows?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Who else knows about this plan?""

"Nobody.""

A second later, her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

Another message.

Daniel grabbed it before she could.

His eyes moved across the screen.

Then he froze.

I watched his face change.

"What?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel?""

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

The message was from Andrew.

*You need to see the file before she deletes it. Check the cloud account. Folder name: Backup Plan.*

My stomach dropped.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

"Backup Plan?""

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel...""

"No.""

He stepped back.

"I want to know.""

Caroline looked horrified.

"Vanessa, what did you do?""

Vanessa didn't respond.

Daniel opened the cloud account.

His fingers moved quickly.

A password screen appeared.

He looked at Vanessa.

"Password.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Password.""

"Daniel, please.""

That was the first time she begged.

Not for forgiveness.

For control.

He entered the password he knew.

It didn't work.

He tried again.

Then stopped.

"She changed it.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You changed your passwords after you started planning this.""

She said nothing.

Daniel looked at her.

"What was the password?""

No answer.

"Vanessa.""

Finally, she whispered:

"The anniversary date.""

Daniel typed it.

The folder opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photos.

Documents.

Notes.

A complete timeline.

My hands went cold.

This wasn't a spontaneous betrayal.

It was a project.

A plan.

Daniel opened the first document.

The title was:

*Separation Strategy.*

He scrolled.

His face became more serious with every line.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

Caroline stepped closer.

"Daniel?""

He handed her the phone.

She read.

Then covered her mouth.

"What?""

I took the phone.

And read.

The first section was about reputation.

*Step one: Create emotional sympathy.*

The second:

*Step two: Establish proof of betrayal.*

The third:

*Step three: Secure financial protection.*

Then the final section.

The one that made my hands shake.

*Step four: Remove obstacles permanently.*

I looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Nobody answered.

Vanessa suddenly moved.

She grabbed the phone from my hand.

"No.""

Daniel caught her wrist.

"Don't.""

She froze.

He released her immediately.

But the warning was clear.

"Explain.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I never meant—"

"Explain.""

She looked at the document.

Then at all of us.

Finally, she whispered:

"I needed to make sure nobody could stop me.""

Daniel stared.

"Stop you from what?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Leaving.""

I frowned.

"Leaving?""

She nodded.

"I knew if I just walked away, people would ask questions.""

She looked at Daniel.

"I needed everyone to hate you.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Hate me?""

"Yes.""

She swallowed.

"If everyone believed you betrayed me, then nobody would question why I left.""

My stomach turned.

The entire accusation against me wasn't even about me.

It was about creating a public image.

She didn't want to be the cheating wife.

She wanted to be the wounded wife.

The victim.

The woman escaping a terrible husband.

Daniel slowly understood.

"You were going to destroy me.""

Vanessa whispered:

"I was going to survive.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You were going to replace me.""

She didn't deny it.

Then something else appeared on the screen.

A video file.

Created two days before the accusation.

Daniel clicked it.

A recording started.

Vanessa appeared on screen.

Sitting in a restaurant.

Talking to Andrew.

My heart raced.

Because this was the first time we were seeing Vanessa when she thought nobody was watching.

Her voice came through the speakers.

"I just need Daniel to believe Emily betrayed us.""

Andrew asked:

"And if he doesn't?""

Vanessa smiled.

A cold smile.

"He will.""

"Why?""

"Because everyone always believes the person who looks hurt.""

The video continued.

Andrew leaned forward.

"What about Emily?""

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

"She'll lose everything.""

The room became silent.

Then she said the words that made Daniel completely still.

"After that, nobody will care what happens to her.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

Daniel looked at her.

And I knew something had changed.

Because until that moment, he was trying to understand why his wife betrayed him.

Now he understood something worse.

She wasn't just trying to leave.

She was trying to destroy anyone who stood in her way.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

A message appeared.

From the insurance company.

*Urgent: Your beneficiary change request has been approved.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another line appeared underneath.

*Effective date: Tomorrow.*

His face went pale.

Because tomorrow wasn't just a date.

May you like

It was the date Vanessa had chosen.

The day her plan officially began.
