Chapter 1: The Lie She Built
The first time my stepsister hit me, she didn't look angry.
She looked terrified.
Her palm struck my cheek so hard that the sound echoed through the living room.
For a second, I didn't even understand what had happened.
I stood frozen, one hand pressed against my burning skin, staring at the woman who had grown up beside me.
"How dare you?"" Vanessa screamed.
Her voice cracked as tears rolled down her face.
"How dare you do this under my own roof?""
I looked around the room in disbelief.
The expensive furniture. The family photos on the wall. The house where I had spent the last three months helping her after she complained she was overwhelmed with work.
And now I was standing there like a criminal.
"Vanessa..."" I whispered.
"What are you talking about?""
She pointed at me with a trembling finger.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about.""
Her husband, Daniel, stood near the doorway.
He had just walked in from work.
The confused expression on his face told me everything.
He wasn't part of this.
Not yet.
"Vanessa, stop," Daniel said slowly.
"What happened?""
She turned toward him, tears instantly flowing harder.
"Ask her.""
Daniel looked at me.
Then at his wife.
Then back at me.
"Emily?""
My throat tightened.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
That laugh scared me more than the slap.
Because it wasn't the laugh of someone hurt.
It was the laugh of someone who had already decided how this story would end.
"Of course you don't.""
She walked closer.
"You've always been good at pretending.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"You move into our house. You act innocent. You act like you need help. And all this time, you've been waiting for a chance to take what belongs to me.""
Daniel's face went pale.
"Vanessa, what are you saying?""
She ignored him.
That was the moment I noticed something strange.
She wasn't looking at her husband.
She wasn't trying to convince him.
She was performing for him.
For me.
For anyone who might hear this later.
She wanted witnesses.
"You think nobody noticed?"" she continued.
"The way you looked at Daniel? The way you always found excuses to be around him?""
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew exactly what she was doing.
She was creating a story.
A story where she was the betrayed wife.
A story where I was the desperate sister who destroyed a marriage.
A story where nobody would ask why she suddenly wanted a divorce.
"Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice shaking, "I have never seen anything between Emily and me.""
She finally looked at him.
Only for a second.
Then she looked away.
"Because she's been hiding it.""
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I was accused.
Because I realized this wasn't a misunderstanding.
This was planned.
"How long have you been waiting to say this?"" I asked quietly.
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
"What?""
"You practiced this.""
The room became silent.
Daniel looked between us.
"Emily...""
I kept my eyes on Vanessa.
"The accusations. The crying. The way you made sure Daniel walked in right when you started yelling.""
Her face hardened.
"You think you're smarter than everyone?""
"No.""
I swallowed.
"I think you're scared.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"Scared of what?""
"That people will find out the truth.""
For the first time, her confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
And so did Daniel.
"What truth?"" he asked.
Vanessa immediately turned toward him.
"Don't listen to her.""
But Daniel didn't move.
"What truth, Vanessa?""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped forward.
"She isn't accusing me because something happened.""
Daniel stared at me.
"Then why?""
"Because she needs someone to blame.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"Stop lying!""
"You need a reason to leave him," I said.
Her breathing changed.
"You want a divorce.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at him.
Then back at me.
"You're insane.""
"No.""
I reached into my pocket.
"And you know exactly why.""
I unlocked my phone.
Daniel noticed.
"What is that?""
Vanessa's face lost all color.
"Emily, don't.""
That was the first honest thing she had said all night.
I looked at her.
"You didn't think I would find them, did you?""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Find what?""
I held up my phone.
"The messages.""
Vanessa stopped breathing.
"The hotel reservations.""
Her eyes widened.
"The pictures.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What pictures?""
I watched the woman who had just slapped me realize something.
She had built the perfect trap.
But she had forgotten one thing.
A trap works both ways.
"You spent weeks preparing to make me look like the villain," I said.
"You collected fake evidence against me. You planned the scene.""
My voice became steadier.
"But you made one mistake.""
Vanessa whispered:
"What mistake?""
"You got so busy creating a lie about me...""
I turned the phone screen toward Daniel.
"...that you forgot to hide your own truth.""
Daniel looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Confusion.
Shock.
Then disbelief.
Because the first message he saw wasn't from me.
It was from another man.
A man named Marcus.
The room went completely silent.
May you like
And then Daniel whispered the one question Vanessa never expected him to ask.
"Who is Marcus?""
