Chapter 6: The Person Behind Vanessa's Perfect Lie

Vanessa stared at the phone screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It was strange how one name could change the entire atmosphere of a room.

Marcus.

The man who had helped expose her.

The man who had been part of her secret life.

The man who now seemed terrified of what she might reveal.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Answer it.""

She didn't move.

"Vanessa.""

Her eyes slowly lifted.

"What?""

"Answer the phone.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Why?""

Her fingers tightened around the device.

"Because you don't understand.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

There it was again.

The sentence she used whenever the truth was about to come out.

"You don't understand.""

But this time, I believed her.

Not because she was innocent.

Because I realized something.

Vanessa was not the only person hiding something.

The phone stopped ringing.

For five seconds, there was silence.

Then a message appeared.

Vanessa looked down.

And immediately deleted it.

Daniel noticed.

"What did it say?""

"Nothing.""

"Show me.""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel held out his hand.

"Give me the phone.""

She stepped back.

"No.""

The room became tense.

Not because she refused.

Because her refusal confirmed everything.

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"What are you afraid I'll see?""

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at me.

Then toward Caroline.

And I saw the calculation happening behind her eyes.

She was deciding who to sacrifice.

That was who Vanessa had always been.

She didn't protect people.

She protected herself.

Finally, she unlocked the phone.

Daniel took it.

The message was short.

From Marcus.

*We need to talk before Daniel finds out the rest.*

Daniel read it twice.

"The rest?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Daniel...""

"What rest?""

No answer.

He looked at her.

"What else don't I know?""

She stayed silent.

And then something unexpected happened.

Caroline stepped forward.

"Vanessa.""

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

"How long?""

Vanessa looked at her mother.

"What?""

"How long have you been doing this?""

The question surprised everyone.

Vanessa frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Caroline looked away.

"Your father warned me.""

Vanessa froze.

"What?""

I looked between them.

Daniel noticed too.

"Who warned you?""

Caroline took a slow breath.

"Your father.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"My father died five years ago.""

"I know.""

"Then how could he warn you?""

Caroline looked at her.

"Because before he passed, he left me a letter.""

The room went silent.

I watched Vanessa's expression shift.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the kind she performed.

The kind she couldn't control.

"What letter?"" Daniel asked.

Caroline didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Vanessa.

"He told me you had a habit.""

Vanessa whispered:

"Stop.""

Caroline continued.

"A habit of rewriting situations whenever things didn't go your way.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You believed him?""

"I didn't want to.""

Caroline's voice cracked.

"You're my daughter.""

She looked at the floor.

"I spent years convincing myself he was wrong.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Caroline looked at me.

"And then you moved in.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

She looked ashamed.

"I noticed things.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"What things?""

"The way you would ask Emily questions.""

"What questions?""

"About Daniel.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Caroline continued.

"You would ask what time he came home. Who he talked to. What he complained about.""

Daniel's face changed.

"She was monitoring me?""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"No.""

But nobody believed her.

Caroline looked at Daniel.

"At first, I thought she was trying to fix your marriage.""

A pause.

"Then I realized she was collecting information.""

I felt a chill.

Everything suddenly connected.

The questions.

The fake concern.

The accusations.

The insurance.

The photos.

Vanessa hadn't reacted to a problem.

She had created one.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" Daniel asked Caroline.

She looked broken.

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of what?""

"Of admitting I raised someone who could do this.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Wow.""

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled.

"So now I'm the monster.""

Daniel stared.

"You changed my insurance.""

"You don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell it.""

She looked at him.

Then at the phone.

Then back at him.

"I didn't do this alone.""

The words landed heavily.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What?""

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"I had help.""

"From Marcus?""

She hesitated.

"Partly.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who else?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel's voice became sharper.

"Who else?""

She finally whispered:

"Your business partner.""

Nobody moved.

Daniel's expression changed.

"My business partner?""

She nodded.

"Andrew.""

I had heard the name before.

Andrew Cole.

Daniel's closest friend.

The man who had attended every family event.

The man who had hugged Vanessa when they announced their engagement.

The man Daniel trusted enough to handle his finances.

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Is it?""

Daniel said nothing.

She continued.

"Andrew knew everything.""

"Everything about what?""

"My marriage.""

She took a breath.

"He knew I wanted out.""

Daniel stared.

"He knew about Marcus?""

"Yes.""

The room felt smaller.

"And he helped you?""

Vanessa looked down.

"He gave me advice.""

"Advice?""

"About protecting myself.""

I watched Daniel's hands tighten.

"Protecting yourself from your husband?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

Everyone froze.

This time, it wasn't Marcus.

The screen showed:

*Andrew Cole.*

Daniel stared.

Nobody spoke.

After a long moment, he answered.

"What do you want?""

Andrew's voice came through the speaker.

"Daniel, listen to me.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"You have ten seconds.""

A pause.

Then Andrew said:

"I know Vanessa told you my name.""

Daniel looked at her.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Andrew continued.

"But before you decide I'm the enemy, you need to know what she was really planning.""

Daniel's grip tightened.

"What are you talking about?""

Andrew's voice lowered.

"She wasn't trying to divorce you.""

A silence.

Then:

"She was trying to make sure you couldn't fight back.""

My blood ran cold.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?""

Andrew didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was barely a whisper.

"It means the insurance policy wasn't her final plan.""

Nobody moved.

Daniel stepped forward.

"What was?""

A long pause.

Then Andrew said:

"Ask her why she needed a fake affair accusation before she made her next move.""

Vanessa's face went completely pale.

Daniel looked at his wife.

May you like

And for the first time...

She looked like someone who knew she had lost control of the story.
