Chapter 2: The Evidence She Never Expected
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
That made it worse.
A person screaming can be ignored.
A person speaking calmly after discovering betrayal cannot.
"Vanessa.""
His eyes stayed on the phone.
"Who is Marcus?""
My stepsister stood perfectly still.
For the first time that night, she looked like she had no script.
No prepared tears.
No rehearsed speech.
Just fear.
"Daniel, it's not what you think.""
I almost laughed.
Because that was always the first sentence people said when it was exactly what someone thought.
Daniel looked at her.
"Then tell me what it is.""
She stepped forward.
"He's just someone from work.""
I watched Daniel scroll through the messages.
His jaw tightened.
"Someone from work who sends you hotel room numbers?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
I looked away.
Not because I felt sorry for her.
Because I remembered every time she had made me feel small.
Every time she reminded me I was "only family because of paperwork.""
Every time she acted like she was doing me a favor by letting me stay in her home.
Three months earlier, she had called me crying.
"Emily, I need help.""
Her voice had sounded broken.
Daniel was traveling constantly.
She was exhausted.
She said she needed someone she trusted.
I believed her.
I packed my bags.
I moved into the guest room.
I cooked dinner.
I cleaned.
I helped her manage the house.
And all that time, she had been planning how to destroy me.
"Show me everything," Daniel said.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Daniel.""
"Show me.""
His voice was different now.
Cold.
She looked at me.
"You did this.""
I shook my head.
"No. You did.""
"You went through my phone?""
"No.""
"Then how?""
I stared at her.
"You left your laptop open.""
That was the truth.
Two weeks earlier, Vanessa had asked me to print some documents from her computer because she was rushing to a meeting.
I wasn't looking for anything.
I wasn't suspicious.
But a notification appeared.
A message preview.
Marcus:
"Can't wait until you're finally free.""
At the time, I ignored it.
Because I trusted my sister.
But after tonight?
After the slap?
After she tried to destroy my reputation?
I went back.
I searched.
And I found everything.
Photos.
Hotel receipts.
Messages.
Months of lies.
Daniel slowly looked through the evidence.
His hands started shaking.
"How long?""
Vanessa stayed silent.
"How long, Vanessa?""
"I don't know.""
The answer made him look up.
"You don't know?""
She covered her face.
"It wasn't serious.""
Daniel laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
"Not serious?""
He held up the phone.
"You were planning to leave me.""
Vanessa immediately looked toward him.
"No.""
But her reaction came too quickly.
Daniel noticed.
"You were.""
"No.""
"You needed a reason.""
Her silence answered for her.
I watched the realization hit him.
The accusation against me wasn't random.
It was insurance.
If Vanessa left him for Marcus, she needed to control the story.
She needed everyone to believe Daniel was the victim of a cheating wife and a betrayal from his own family.
She needed sympathy.
She needed protection.
And I was the perfect target.
The needy stepsister.
The woman everyone would question first.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
Then something changed.
Her sadness disappeared.
Her anger returned.
"You think you won?""
Daniel looked at her.
"What?""
She pointed at me.
"She still ruined everything.""
I stared at her.
"You still can't admit it.""
"Admit what?""
"That you chose me because you thought nobody would believe me.""
Her face tightened.
"You were always jealous.""
I shook my head.
"No. You were always afraid.""
She stepped closer.
"Afraid of you?""
"No.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Afraid he would find out you weren't the perfect wife you pretended to be.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa smiled.
A small, dangerous smile.
"You really think those messages are enough?""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"You should be careful, Emily.""
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa picked up her purse.
"You only found one side of the story.""
She walked toward the door.
I watched her hand reach for the handle.
Then she stopped.
Without turning around, she said:
"Because tomorrow morning, everyone is going to see the evidence I prepared against you.""
The door opened.
And before she left, she whispered:
"And this time, nobody will believe you.""
The next morning, my phone exploded with messages.
Family members.
Friends.
Neighbors.
Everyone asking the same question.
"Emily... why did you betray Vanessa?""
And attached to every message was a photo.
May you like
A photo I had never seen before.
A photo that made my blood run cold.
