Chapter 3: The Night She Erased From Our Memories

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The words hung between us.

"The night Vanessa disappeared for twelve hours...""

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"...and told me she was with you.""

I stared at him.

"She told you she was with me?""

He nodded slowly.

"Last summer. She said you two went shopping. She said you were having a difficult time and she wanted to spend the day with you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Daniel, I was in another state.""

His eyes lifted.

"What?""

"I was visiting my mother.""

The silence that followed was heavier than anything before.

Daniel looked confused.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"You weren't here?""

I shook my head.

"I left three days before that.""

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Fear.

Because he was finally seeing the same thing I had seen.

Vanessa didn't just create one lie.

She created an entire reality.

A reality where she controlled what everyone believed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" he asked.

I almost laughed.

"Tell you what?""

"That she lied.""

I looked at him.

"Daniel, why would I think your wife was using my name as an excuse?""

He had no answer.

Because that was the most painful part.

Vanessa had used our trust against us.

She knew neither of us would immediately suspect her.

She knew I would never imagine my stepsister was building a case against me.

And she knew Daniel would never believe his wife was capable of something so calculated.

"Who sent that message?"" Daniel asked.

"I don't know.""

"Did you reply?""

"No.""

"Good.""

I watched him pace across the room.

The confident man who had walked through the door yesterday was gone.

Now he looked like someone searching through years of memories, wondering which ones were real.

"What happened that night?"" I asked.

He stopped.

"I don't know.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"Vanessa came home after midnight.""

"And?""

"She was crying.""

I listened carefully.

"She told me she had a fight with you.""

I shook my head.

"That never happened.""

"I know that now.""

Daniel sat down.

"She said you were jealous of our marriage.""

My eyebrows lifted.

"Me?""

"She said you wanted the life she had.""

I felt a cold feeling spread through my chest.

Because that was the exact image she was trying to create.

The desperate younger sister.

The woman who wanted someone else's happiness.

"She said you hated seeing us together.""

I looked away.

"She was building this story a year ago.""

Daniel nodded.

"I didn't know.""

"She was preparing.""

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

Both of us froze.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

The timing felt wrong.

Too perfect.

He walked slowly toward the door.

Before he could open it, a voice came from outside.

"Daniel?""

It was Vanessa.

My entire body tensed.

Daniel looked at me.

"Stay here.""

I almost smiled.

"She won't be here to apologize.""

He opened the door.

Vanessa stood outside.

She looked different.

Her makeup was perfect.

Her hair was done.

She looked like someone going to a meeting.

Not someone who had destroyed a marriage.

"I need to talk to you," she said.

Daniel stared at her.

"You should have said that before you accused Emily.""

Her expression hardened.

"I was emotional.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"You were acting.""

The word hit her.

For a second, I saw fear.

Then it disappeared.

"I know what she told you.""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Do you?""

Vanessa looked past him.

She saw me standing in the living room.

Her jaw tightened.

"You.""

I didn't move.

She pointed at me.

"This is exactly what you wanted.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"You wanted to destroy my marriage.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"Stop.""

"No, Daniel. You need to hear this.""

She looked at him with tears forming.

"She has always been jealous of me.""

I watched carefully.

She was doing it again.

The same performance.

The same emotional manipulation.

But this time Daniel wasn't watching blindly.

He was studying her.

"Why did you prepare divorce papers three weeks ago?"" he asked.

Vanessa froze.

The question destroyed her rhythm.

"What?""

"The papers.""

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Daniel noticed.

"Why were they already signed?""

Vanessa looked away.

"I...""

"You planned to leave.""

"No.""

"You planned to leave me and then blame her.""

Her breathing became faster.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Is it?""

Daniel took out his phone.

"You sent Marcus a message saying, 'Once everyone believes the truth about Emily, nobody will question why I left.''"

Vanessa went silent.

I watched the color disappear from her face.

For the first time, she had no response.

No tears.

No anger.

No performance.

Just silence.

Daniel looked devastated.

"How could you?""

Vanessa's expression suddenly changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

"You really want to know how?""

Daniel stared at her.

She laughed quietly.

"Because I was tired.""

"Tired of what?""

"Of pretending.""

The words shocked me.

Vanessa stepped inside.

"I spent years watching everyone compare us.""

She looked at me.

"Emily was always the sweet one.""

I stared.

"What?""

"You were the one everyone felt sorry for.""

Her voice became sharper.

"Everyone wanted to protect you.""

I shook my head.

"Vanessa...""

"No.""

She pointed at me.

"You don't get to act innocent.""

Daniel looked at her.

"This doesn't explain cheating.""

She ignored him.

"I worked for everything.""

Her eyes filled with anger.

"I built a life. I built a reputation. I built a marriage.""

She looked at me.

"And then you moved into my house.""

My heart sank.

That was it.

That was the real reason.

Not love.

Not betrayal.

Not suspicion.

Resentment.

She had convinced herself I was a threat.

"I helped you," I whispered.

She laughed.

"You made me look weak.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

"Because everyone saw me taking care of you.""

The honesty of her cruelty shocked me.

She wasn't angry because I did something.

She was angry because my existence reminded her of a version of herself she hated.

Daniel stepped back.

"Vanessa...""

She looked at him.

"I didn't want you to hate me.""

"Then why?""

"Because I wanted you to choose me.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What?""

"I knew if I became the victim, you'd fight for me.""

The room went silent.

"You wanted me to fight for you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to know if you still cared.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You destroyed my life to test my love?""

She had no answer.

Because even she knew how terrible it sounded.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And everything changed.

A small smile appeared.

She answered.

"Yes. It's done.""

My blood ran cold.

Daniel heard it too.

Vanessa turned away.

"I told you. They believe me.""

I stepped closer.

"Who are you talking to?""

She ended the call immediately.

Too late.

Daniel had already seen the name.

His face changed.

"Marcus.""

Vanessa froze.

Daniel whispered:

"Your affair partner knew about this entire plan.""

No one spoke.

Then Daniel looked at me.

"Emily...""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

He stared at Vanessa.

"Something she doesn't know I found.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"What did you find?""

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And when Vanessa saw the handwriting on the front, her entire face turned pale.

Because the envelope wasn't from Daniel.

May you like

It was from Marcus.

And it had been delivered to Daniel three days before Vanessa accused me.
