Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Was Hiding
The photo stayed on Daniel's phone.
Marcus standing outside the courthouse.
A folder in his hand.
A label visible enough to make my stomach turn.
*Daniel Carter Investigation.*
For several seconds, nobody said anything.
It felt like the entire room was waiting for Daniel to react.
But he didn't.
He just stared.
Like his mind was trying to understand a sentence written in a language he had never learned.
Finally, he looked at Vanessa.
"What investigation?""
She looked away.
That was enough.
Daniel noticed.
"Vanessa.""
Her shoulders dropped.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
"Not another excuse.""
She swallowed.
"What do you want me to say?""
"The truth.""
She looked at him.
"The truth?""
"Yes.""
He stepped closer.
"For once in your life, tell the truth before someone else reveals it.""
The words hit her.
And for a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.
But Vanessa was still Vanessa.
Even when cornered, she searched for a way to survive.
"Marcus was investigating you.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
"Why was Marcus investigating me?""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Then Caroline spoke.
"Because he thought you were hiding something.""
Everyone turned toward her.
Daniel looked confused.
"What?""
Caroline looked uncomfortable.
"I didn't want to get involved.""
"You're already involved.""
She nodded slowly.
"I know.""
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"But I think you deserve to know everything.""
Vanessa immediately reacted.
"Mom, don't.""
Caroline ignored her.
"Marcus contacted me two months ago.""
Daniel froze.
"Why?""
"He asked questions.""
"What kind of questions?""
Caroline took a breath.
"About your business.""
The room became quiet.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"You knew?""
She didn't answer.
That was the answer.
"You knew Marcus was investigating me.""
Vanessa whispered:
"Yes.""
"And you still worked with him?""
Her face tightened.
"I wasn't working with him.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You just happened to be having an affair with the man investigating me?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""
I almost couldn't believe those words.
Not because they were surprising.
Because they were familiar.
Everything with Vanessa was always an accident when she was caught.
Never a choice.
Never a decision.
Always something that "happened.""
Daniel picked up the photo again.
"What was he investigating?""
Vanessa stayed silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus's folder.
"Why does my name appear on a courthouse document?""
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
"Because Marcus thought you were hiding money.""
The room went still.
Daniel stared.
"What?""
"He thought you had accounts you weren't telling me about.""
Daniel looked stunned.
"That's insane.""
"I know.""
"Do you?""
His voice became sharper.
"Because you helped him.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I wanted answers.""
"No.""
Daniel stepped back.
"You wanted information.""
She didn't deny it.
I watched Daniel carefully.
There was something different about him now.
The betrayal from Vanessa was painful.
But this was different.
This attacked his identity.
His reputation.
His entire life.
"What did Marcus find?"" Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
"I'm not.""
"Then why was he at a courthouse?""
No answer.
Daniel turned away.
Then his phone rang.
This time, he didn't look surprised.
He answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
Professional.
Calm.
"Mr. Carter? My name is Laura Bennett. I'm an attorney representing Marcus Hale.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Why?""
"Because my client believes you need information before Vanessa Carter completes her plan.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her.""
Daniel looked at her.
"You don't get to decide that anymore.""
The attorney continued.
"Mr. Carter, Marcus made mistakes. He admits that.""
Daniel glanced at the phone.
"But he also discovered something important.""
"What?""
A pause.
Then:
"Your wife was not only preparing to leave you.""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Go on.""
"She was preparing to accuse you of financial fraud.""
I felt cold.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"What?""
Vanessa's face went pale.
The attorney continued.
"Marcus found documents showing someone was preparing to report you to authorities.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Report me for what?""
"Embezzlement.""
Silence.
The word was devastating.
Daniel looked genuinely confused.
"I've never stolen anything.""
"I know.""
The attorney's voice remained calm.
"That's why Marcus became concerned.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why would he care?""
A pause.
Then:
"Because he realized Vanessa was using him too.""
Vanessa looked away.
The attorney continued.
"Marcus believed he was helping her leave a bad marriage.""
Daniel looked disgusted.
"Then he found out the truth.""
"What truth?""
The answer came slowly.
"That Vanessa needed evidence against you.""
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely blank.
The attorney continued.
"She asked Marcus to help find anything that could make you look guilty.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"And when he couldn't find anything?""
"She started creating her own evidence.""
My heart sank.
The room became silent.
Because we already knew.
The affair accusation.
The insurance.
The fake medical statement.
But there was more.
A bigger plan.
The attorney spoke again.
"Mr. Carter, Marcus has proof.""
Daniel opened his eyes.
"Proof of what?""
"That Vanessa paid someone to access your private financial records.""
Caroline gasped.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Who?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Daniel...""
"Who?""
She said nothing.
Then the attorney answered.
"Andrew Cole.""
The room exploded into silence.
Daniel looked like he had been hit.
Andrew.
His closest friend.
His business partner.
The person he trusted.
"No.""
His voice was barely audible.
"Andrew wouldn't do that.""
The attorney replied:
"He already did.""
Daniel looked down.
Then slowly laughed.
A painful laugh.
"Everyone.""
Nobody spoke.
"Everyone around me knew.""
I felt my heart ache.
Because Daniel wasn't just discovering betrayal.
He was discovering isolation.
The people closest to him had built a world around him where everyone knew the truth except him.
Then Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Daniel.""
He looked at her.
And for the first time, she sounded genuinely afraid.
"I didn't know Andrew would go that far.""
Daniel stared.
"You knew enough.""
"No.""
"You knew enough to let him help you destroy me.""
She shook her head.
"I was trying to fix my life.""
"No.""
His voice became firm.
"You were trying to rewrite reality.""
Vanessa started crying.
"I loved you.""
Daniel looked at her.
"No.""
A long pause.
"You loved the life I gave you.""
The sentence broke something in her.
She sat down.
For the first time, she looked small.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
Just exposed.
Then the attorney said one final thing.
"Mr. Carter, there's one more document Marcus found.""
Daniel picked up the phone.
"What document?""
A pause.
Then:
"The original plan Vanessa created before the accusation.""
Daniel frowned.
"Original plan?""
"Yes.""
The attorney's voice lowered.
"The accusation against Emily was actually Plan B.""
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"What's Plan A?""
The attorney answered:
"Making sure you never had the chance to defend yourself.""
The call ended.
And on Daniel's phone appeared a file.
A single document.
Created six months earlier.
The title read:
*Final Solution.*
Daniel opened it.
May you like
And the first sentence made all of us freeze.
*If Daniel refuses to cooperate, create an accident.*
