Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Behind the Policy
Vanessa didn't answer.
That was the worst part.
Not the accusation.
Not the shock.
Not even the possibility that she had planned something much darker than a divorce.
It was her silence.
Because innocent people usually rush to explain.
They deny.
They argue.
They demand proof.
But Vanessa just stood there, staring at Daniel like she was searching for the perfect response.
The perfect lie.
"Say something.""
Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.
Vanessa blinked.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
He stepped back.
"Don't say my name like that.""
Her face crumbled.
"I can explain.""
I almost closed my eyes.
Because that sentence had become her shield.
Every time the truth got too close, she reached for the same words.
I can explain.
Daniel laughed quietly.
"Explain what?""
He pointed toward the papers on the table.
"Explain the affair?""
He pointed toward the phone.
"The messages?""
Then he looked at the documents.
"The insurance?""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"You don't understand.""
"Then help me understand.""
Her lips trembled.
"I made mistakes.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Mistakes?""
His voice rose slightly.
"You accidentally met another man for months?""
Silence.
"You accidentally planned a divorce?""
Silence.
"You accidentally changed my life insurance?""
Vanessa looked away.
That was the answer.
Daniel saw it.
I saw it.
Everyone saw it.
"You did it," Daniel whispered.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"No, Daniel, listen to me.""
He stepped away from her.
"I don't know who you are.""
The sentence hit her harder than any accusation.
Because Vanessa could handle anger.
She could handle people hating her.
But she couldn't handle Daniel seeing her clearly.
"I loved you," she said.
Daniel looked at her.
"Then why?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
She looked at me.
And somehow, even then, she found a way to make it my fault.
"Of losing everything.""
I stared at her.
"You mean losing your image.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You don't know what it's like.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I know exactly what it's like to have someone decide who you are without asking.""
The room became quiet.
For years, Vanessa had controlled the story.
She had decided I was weak.
She had decided I was jealous.
She had decided I was the kind of person who would betray family.
And now the same thing was happening to her.
The difference was...
Her story was finally falling apart.
Daniel picked up the documents.
"I want to know when you changed this.""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"When?""
"Six months ago.""
I felt my stomach drop.
Six months.
Before the affair was discovered.
Before the accusation.
Before she ever claimed to be betrayed.
Daniel looked confused.
"Why?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Because we weren't doing well.""
"So your solution was to prepare for my death?""
"No!""
She shouted it so suddenly that everyone froze.
Then she lowered her voice.
"No.""
She took a breath.
"I never wanted you to die.""
Daniel stared.
"Then why change it?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because I needed security.""
The answer was so cold that even she seemed to realize how it sounded.
"Security?""
Daniel repeated.
"You were my wife.""
"I didn't know if you would leave me.""
"I was the one who should have been worried about that.""
Vanessa looked at him.
And for a moment, something almost honest appeared.
Regret.
"I made one mistake.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
He looked at the papers.
"You made choices.""
The front door suddenly opened.
All three of us turned.
A woman stood there.
Vanessa's mother.
My stepmother.
Caroline.
She looked around the room.
Her eyes immediately landed on Vanessa.
"What happened?""
Nobody answered.
Caroline stepped closer.
"Vanessa called me.""
I looked at my stepsister.
Of course she did.
She wasn't looking for truth.
She was looking for backup.
Caroline looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the papers.
"What is going on?""
Vanessa immediately moved toward her.
"Mom...""
But Caroline raised a hand.
"Don't.""
That surprised everyone.
Even Vanessa.
Caroline took the papers from Daniel.
She read silently.
Her expression changed line by line.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
"Is this true?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Mom—"
"Is it true?""
The room waited.
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
"Yes.""
Caroline closed her eyes.
For years, she had defended Vanessa.
She had always believed Vanessa could do no wrong.
And now even she couldn't defend what she saw.
"You changed the insurance.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I was protecting myself.""
Caroline looked horrified.
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You were protecting your plan.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You too?""
Caroline looked at her.
"What?""
"Everyone chooses her.""
She pointed at me.
"Everyone always chooses Emily.""
I couldn't believe it.
After everything.
After being exposed.
She was still keeping score.
Caroline looked exhausted.
"This was never about Emily.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Of course it was.""
"No.""
Caroline's voice became firm.
"This was about you refusing to accept that you could be wrong.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from the insurance company.
He opened it.
His face changed.
"What?""
I stepped closer.
"Daniel?""
He looked at the screen.
"They received a request.""
Caroline frowned.
"What request?""
Daniel slowly looked up.
"A beneficiary change.""
Vanessa went pale.
"I already told you—"
"No.""
Daniel interrupted.
"This wasn't six months ago.""
He turned the phone around.
"The request was submitted two weeks ago.""
My heart stopped.
Two weeks ago.
The same time Vanessa started planning the accusation.
The same time she began collecting fake evidence.
Daniel kept reading.
"And there was a note attached.""
Vanessa whispered:
"What note?""
Daniel's voice became cold.
"That the change was urgent.""
The room froze.
"Why would it be urgent?"" I asked.
Daniel didn't answer.
Because he was looking at the final line.
The line that made his face lose all color.
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
"The reason for the urgent change.""
A pause.
Then he read:
"Potential concern regarding husband's health condition.""
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at his wife.
"My health condition?""
Vanessa looked terrified.
"I didn't write that.""
Daniel looked down at the message.
Then he whispered:
"Someone reported that I was sick.""
The room went silent.
Because Daniel wasn't sick.
He had never been sick.
Which meant someone had lied.
Someone had used his name.
Someone had created a false medical concern to push through the insurance change faster.
And suddenly, the question wasn't whether Vanessa wanted a divorce.
It was something much worse.
Who had helped her?
Daniel looked at the phone again.
Then his eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"Who helped you file this?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
But her expression did.
She wasn't afraid of being caught anymore.
She was afraid of someone else being exposed.
And then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned white.
May you like
Because the caller ID showed a name none of us expected.
Marcus.
