Chapter 4: The Envelope That Exposed Her Real Plan
Vanessa stared at the envelope in Daniel's hand like she was looking at a weapon.
Not a letter.
Not a piece of paper.
A weapon.
For the first time since this nightmare began, she looked completely powerless.
"Where did you get that?"" she whispered.
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
He looked down at the envelope.
Then at his wife.
Then at me.
"I found it in my office.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"When?""
"Three days ago.""
Her expression changed.
Three days.
The same day she had started acting differently.
The same day she began asking strange questions.
The same day she suddenly became interested in whether Daniel had been "happy" in their marriage.
I remembered it now.
She had sat across from me at dinner that night.
She barely touched her food.
She kept watching Daniel.
Like she was waiting for something.
At the time, I thought she was having marriage problems.
Now I understood.
She was waiting to see what he knew.
"What was inside?"" Vanessa asked.
Daniel's eyes hardened.
"Why don't you tell me?""
She looked away.
That was enough of an answer.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside were several printed pages.
He pulled out the first one.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"I didn't understand why someone would send me this.""
Vanessa's voice became shaky.
"Daniel, don't.""
That was the first time she sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Daniel looked at her.
"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""
The words hit harder than a scream.
He looked back at the paper.
"The first page was a timeline.""
I frowned.
"A timeline of what?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Her plan.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel didn't react.
"It listed dates.""
He turned the paper around.
"Dates when Vanessa met Marcus.""
Vanessa's face went pale.
"Daniel—"
"Dates when she searched divorce attorneys.""
He looked at another page.
"Dates when she moved money from our joint account.""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I felt my chest tighten.
This wasn't just an affair.
This was preparation.
She wasn't leaving because she found someone else.
She had been building an escape route.
Daniel kept reading.
"And this...""
He held up another page.
"This is what I don't understand.""
His voice lowered.
"Why did Marcus send me proof?""
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Like she was calculating whether she could still run.
"Because he was angry," she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
"Angry enough to expose you?""
She didn't answer.
I looked at the papers.
"Maybe Marcus realized what she was doing.""
Vanessa snapped her eyes toward me.
"Stay out of this.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She still spoke to me like I was the problem.
Daniel noticed.
"Why is she still your enemy?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"What?""
"You keep looking at Emily like she's the person who destroyed us.""
His voice became colder.
"But everything I've seen says you did that yourself.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"I need answers.""
He placed the papers on the table.
"Why did you blame her?""
Vanessa stayed silent.
"Why Emily?""
Finally, she looked at me.
And I saw it.
The truth.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Jealousy.
"You want to know why?""
Her voice was quiet.
"Because she was believable.""
I felt a chill.
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"It means everyone already sees her as someone who needs saving.""
She looked at me.
"The lonely sister. The woman who had nowhere to go. The woman who would be grateful for any attention.""
My hands curled into fists.
"So you thought people would believe I was desperate enough to steal your husband?""
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked even Daniel.
He stared at her.
"You actually believed that?""
Vanessa looked away.
"I knew how people saw her.""
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You knew how you wanted people to see her.""
Silence.
Then he asked the question that changed everything.
"Did Marcus know you were going to accuse Emily?""
Vanessa didn't respond.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did he?""
Her silence answered.
I looked at Daniel.
"That's why he sent the envelope.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"He knew she was going too far.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
A broken, bitter laugh.
"You think Marcus is some hero?""
Neither of us answered.
She wiped her tears.
"Marcus sent that because he wanted to protect himself.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
Vanessa smiled.
"He knew I had evidence against him too.""
The room shifted.
I felt it immediately.
There was another layer.
There always was.
"What evidence?"" Daniel asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she looked at him.
"Ask him.""
Daniel stared.
"Ask who?""
"Marcus.""
She reached for her phone.
But Daniel stopped her.
"No.""
She looked at him.
"I want to hear everything.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
All three of us stared.
Daniel slowly answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
I couldn't hear the words.
But I saw Daniel's face change.
The confusion.
The anger.
Then shock.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Why are you calling me?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
She knew who it was.
Daniel put the phone on speaker.
A nervous male voice filled the room.
"Daniel... I know you hate me right now.""
Marcus.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"But you need to know something.""
Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.
"What?""
Marcus took a breath.
"Vanessa didn't plan this because she wanted a divorce.""
Nobody moved.
"She planned this because she was afraid.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Afraid of what?""
The voice on the phone became quieter.
"Because I found out what she really did.""
My heartbeat quickened.
Daniel stepped closer to the phone.
"What did she do?""
A long pause.
Then Marcus said:
"She didn't just cheat on you.""
Vanessa whispered:
"Don't.""
Marcus continued.
"She changed the beneficiary documents on your life insurance policy.""
The room went completely silent.
Daniel stared at his wife.
"What?""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Life insurance.
This was no longer about a divorce.
No longer about jealousy.
No longer about revenge.
Daniel's voice trembled.
"Vanessa...""
She immediately shook her head.
"No.""
But there was something different now.
Her fear wasn't about being caught.
It was about what came next.
Marcus spoke again.
"Daniel, you need to check the documents.""
Daniel didn't blink.
"Why?""
The answer came quietly.
"Because if anything happened to you...""
A pause.
"...Vanessa would become the only person who benefited.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
May you like
And asked the question Vanessa had spent months trying to avoid.
"Did you try to make me disappear?""
