Chapter 8: The Secret Behind My Name
The words on my phone screen blurred.
Not because I couldn’t read them.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
*You were never adopted by accident.*
I stared at the message.
Again.
And again.
Waiting for the meaning to change.
It didn’t.
Daniel stood beside me, reading the same words.
His face was filled with confusion.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
But that wasn’t completely true.
Because deep down, I had always known there was something strange about my past.
Something nobody wanted to discuss.
My adoption was always described as a happy story.
A child finding a family.
A second chance.
But there were always missing pieces.
Questions nobody answered.
Why were my original records sealed?
Why did my adoptive parents become uncomfortable whenever I asked about my biological family?
Why did Claire always act like I had stolen something from her?
I looked at Mark.
“You knew?””
He looked shocked.
“No.””
“Then why did you react when you saw the photo?””
Mark shook his head.
“I reacted because I recognized the person in the background.””
My heart stopped.
“What person?””
He pointed at the picture.
I looked closer.
It was an old photograph.
Me as a child.
Standing outside a house I didn’t recognize.
Behind me was a woman.
Partially hidden.
But visible enough.
Mark swallowed.
“That woman.””
I leaned closer.
“Who is she?””
He looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“That’s your biological mother.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Because that couldn’t be true.
My biological mother had supposedly disappeared from my life before I could remember.
That was all I had ever been told.
“She’s gone,” I whispered.
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“I’m saying Claire’s mother knew about her.””
Daniel frowned.
“My mother knew?””
Mark nodded.
“She knew who she was.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence hurt more than anything.
Because it meant everyone had known something about my life except me.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mark, explain.””
Mark rubbed his face.
“This family has been hiding things for years.””
He looked at me.
“Your adoption was connected to Robert Bennett.””
My heart raced.
“Daniel’s father?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would my father know anything about her adoption?””
Mark hesitated.
“Because he was the one who arranged it.””
The words hit me.
I stepped back.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father?””
Mark nodded.
“Robert found you when you were a baby.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“My parents adopted me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would his father be involved?””
Mark looked at the floor.
“Because your biological mother worked for Robert.””
The room went completely quiet.
Daniel stared.
“As an employee?””
Mark nodded.
“She was his assistant.””
I felt dizzy.
“So what?””
Mark looked at me.
“She discovered the financial crimes.””
Everything suddenly connected.
The trust.
The missing money.
The investigation.
The evidence.
My biological mother had been the person who discovered it.
Daniel’s father had protected her.
And somehow, years later, I became part of the same family.
“Wait,” Daniel said.
His voice was low.
“You’re saying my father knew she was in danger?””
“Yes.””
“And he hid her daughter?””
Mark nodded.
“He wanted to keep her safe.””
I looked at the screen.
The photo.
The message.
The unanswered questions.
“But why didn’t he tell me?””
Mark looked sad.
“Because he thought the people responsible were still watching.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Mark didn’t answer.
But I already knew.
Daniel knew too.
His eyes slowly moved toward the phone.
Toward the name that had started everything.
His mother.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
Nobody spoke.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
His mother wasn’t protecting the family.
She was protecting herself.
Then Claire suddenly laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
She was sitting on the couch.
Tears running down her face.
“You finally understand.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I spent my whole life thinking you were the problem.””
I said nothing.
Claire continued.
“My mother always told me you came into this family and took everything.””
Her voice shook.
“She told me Robert cared about you because he felt guilty.””
I frowned.
“Guilty?””
Claire nodded.
“She said your existence was proof of something he did wrong.””
Daniel looked angry.
“Claire, what exactly did she tell you?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“That your biological mother tried to expose the family.””
Mark looked shocked.
“That’s a lie.””
“I know that now.””
Claire looked at me.
“But I believed it.””
The anger inside me was fighting with something else.
Pain.
Because for years, Claire had hated me because of a story someone else created.
But she still chose what she did.
She still hurt me.
“You could have asked me.””
Claire looked away.
“I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You were angry.””
She didn’t respond.
Because she knew I was right.
Daniel walked toward the laptop.
“We need to recover the video.””
Mark nodded.
“I know someone who can.””
“Who?””
“A private investigator.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Can we trust him?””
Mark hesitated.
“Yes.””
The hesitation bothered me.
“Why did you hesitate?””
Mark looked at me.
“Because he worked with your biological mother.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Before anyone could ask another question, there was a loud knock at the front door.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
“It’s almost midnight.””
Nobody moved.
The knock came again.
Three slow knocks.
Not impatient.
Not random.
Like whoever was outside knew exactly when to come.
Claire whispered:
“She found us.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Your mother.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“What if she knows we have the drive?””
Mark stepped closer.
“She probably does.””
Daniel looked at the door.
The knocking stopped.
Then a voice came from outside.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
“Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
His mother.
“I know you’re in there.””
Daniel looked at the others.
Then toward the door.
The voice continued.
“Open the door.””
A pause.
Then:
“Because if you watch that video, you’ll learn the truth about your father.””
My heart raced.
The woman outside continued.
“And you’ll also learn the truth about the girl standing beside you.””
I felt cold.
Daniel looked at me.
The door handle slowly moved.
Someone outside was trying to open it.
May you like
Then his mother whispered:
“She isn’t who you think she is.””
