Chapter 3: The Person Behind The Warning
Daniel read the message three more times.
Each time, his expression became colder.
Claire watched him carefully.
Not with anger anymore.
With fear.
Real fear.
The kind she could no longer hide.
“Who sent that?”” she asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
Still nothing.
She walked closer.
“Give me your phone.””
He finally looked up.
“No.””
That single word changed the atmosphere.
Claire stopped moving.
For years, she had controlled every conversation in that house.
She knew exactly what to say.
Exactly when to cry.
Exactly when to get angry.
Exactly how to make people feel guilty.
But now Daniel wasn’t reacting the way she expected.
He wasn’t defending her.
He wasn’t comforting her.
He was studying her.
Like he was trying to figure out when she had become a stranger.
“I’m your wife,” Claire said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
“And I trusted you.””
Her lips trembled.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you?””
The question came immediately.
No hesitation.
No softness.
Claire looked away.
I stood near the doorway, watching everything unfold.
Only a few hours earlier, I had walked into that house believing I was helping my stepsister.
I thought Claire needed me.
I thought despite our complicated childhood, we were still family.
I had spent years trying to keep peace between us.
Whenever Claire complained that our parents treated me differently, I stepped aside.
Whenever she said she felt ignored, I listened.
Whenever she made comments about my appearance, my career, or my relationships, I told myself she was just insecure.
I never imagined insecurity could turn into cruelty.
Daniel opened the message thread again.
The unknown sender had attached another file.
A video.
Claire saw it.
Her face changed instantly.
“No.””
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“You know what’s in that video?””
“No.””
But her voice betrayed her.
Daniel pressed play.
The screen showed a restaurant.
A quiet corner table.
Claire was sitting across from the same man from the photo.
The man reached across the table and held her hand.
The video had no sound.
But the body language said everything.
Daniel watched.
His jaw tightened.
Claire stepped forward.
“Daniel, please.””
He paused the video.
“Please what?””
“I can explain.””
“You said nothing happened.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“When were you planning to tell me?””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“I was confused.””
“Confused for months?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised me.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For believing something terrible about you.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because the damage wasn’t just the accusation.
It was how quickly Claire had created a version of me that people could hate.
A version where I was the villain.
“I just don’t understand why she chose me,” I said.
Daniel looked back at Claire.
“She needed someone everyone would believe was capable of it.””
Claire’s eyes moved toward him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you knew exactly what you were doing.””
Her face hardened.
“You’re blaming me?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Claire stared at him.
“You’re taking her side?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed toward the screen.
“I’m taking the truth’s side.””
For the first time that night, Claire looked completely defeated.
But I knew her.
Or at least, I thought I did.
People like Claire didn’t surrender easily.
They changed tactics.
And seconds later, she did exactly that.
She sat down on the couch.
Covered her face.
Started crying.
“I made one mistake.””
Neither of us spoke.
“One mistake, and now everyone thinks I’m some monster.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You cheated.””
“I was lonely!””
“You framed my wife.””
“She’s not your wife.””
The words slipped out.
A moment of silence followed.
Claire realized what she had said.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“What did you just say?””
She froze.
“I mean…”
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“Say it again.””
Claire looked nervous.
“I mean she’s not the one you should be protecting.””
I felt something inside me change.
Because that sentence revealed something deeper.
Claire didn’t just want to hide her affair.
She wanted to destroy me.
Not because of Daniel.
Because of me.
Daniel seemed to realize the same thing.
“Why do you hate her so much?””
Claire looked away.
“I don’t.””
“Then why?””
No answer.
“Why did you tell people she was trying to steal your life?””
Still nothing.
“Why did you spend years making everyone think she was the problem?””
Her eyes suddenly lifted.
And for a second, the mask disappeared.
“You always had everything.””
I froze.
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You don’t even realize it.””
She stood up.
“You were always the one people felt sorry for.””
“That’s not true.””
“Yes, it is!””
Her voice rose.
“When we were kids, everyone looked at you like you were fragile. When our parents fought, they protected you. When I struggled, nobody noticed.””
I stared at her.
“Claire…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You got sympathy. You got attention. You got everyone believing you were the good one.””
Daniel looked disappointed.
“So this was jealousy?””
Claire didn’t answer.
And that silence told us enough.
But there was something else.
Something she wasn’t saying.
I noticed it when Daniel asked about the affair.
Her fear wasn’t just about losing him.
It was about something bigger.
Something hidden.
My eyes moved toward her purse sitting on the chair.
A small folder was sticking out.
Claire noticed me looking.
She immediately grabbed it.
Too quickly.
“What’s that?”” Daniel asked.
“Nothing.””
“Why are you hiding it?””
“It’s private.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“After tonight, I don’t think you get to decide what’s private anymore.””
Claire held the folder tightly.
“No.””
The panic in her voice was different.
The affair had embarrassed her.
But this?
This terrified her.
Daniel reached for it.
Claire pulled away.
“Don’t.””
I looked at the folder.
There was a logo printed on the corner.
A law office.
My heart started beating faster.
“Claire,” I said slowly.
“What?””
“Why do you have paperwork from a lawyer?””
Her face went completely still.
Daniel looked at her.
“A lawyer?””
Claire said nothing.
And then the truth hit me.
The cheating wasn’t the real plan.
The divorce wasn’t the real plan.
The accusation against me wasn’t even the biggest secret.
She had been preparing something much larger.
Something that required legal help.
Something she needed me to take the blame for.
Daniel grabbed the folder from her hand.
Claire tried to stop him.
But it was too late.
He opened it.
The first page was a document with bold letters across the top.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then he looked at me.
His face had changed.
“Claire…”
She started crying.
“Daniel, listen—”
He held up the paper.
“What is this?””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at the signature at the bottom.
Then back at Claire.
“You were planning to divorce me…”
He swallowed.
“And you already filed paperwork claiming you were the victim of an affair.””
My stomach dropped.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
His voice became almost a whisper.
“Using my stepsister as the person who betrayed you.””
Claire said nothing.
Because there was nothing left to say.
Then Daniel turned the page.
And his expression changed again.
This time, it wasn’t anger.
It was shock.
Because attached to the divorce documents was another file.
A financial agreement.
With my name on it.
I stared at the paper.
“I never signed that.””
May you like
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Then why does it say you did?””
