Chapter 6: The Mother Who Pulled The Strings

Daniel stared at the name flashing on his phone.

*Mom.*

Nobody spoke.

The timing was too perfect.

Almost impossible.

Claire looked terrified.

Mark looked exhausted.

And I felt a strange heaviness settle in my chest.

Because suddenly the entire situation became much bigger than a cheating accusation.

Bigger than a fake divorce.

Bigger than a stolen signature.

There was someone else behind it.

Someone who had been watching everything happen.

Daniel slowly raised the phone.

He didn’t answer.

The call ended.

A few seconds later, it rang again.

Same name.

Same person.

This time, Daniel pressed the speaker button.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice immediately filled the room.

“Daniel, sweetheart. Why aren’t you answering my calls?””

His mother’s voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that made my skin crawl.

Daniel looked around the room.

“Mom.””

A pause.

Then:

“Is something wrong?””

Daniel let out a quiet laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe she was pretending.

“You tell me.””

Another pause.

Then his mother asked:

“Is Claire with you?””

Claire looked at the phone.

Her face turned pale.

Daniel noticed.

“Yes.””

The silence on the other end lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel heard it.

We all heard it.

She knew.

She already knew.

“Why did you ask if Claire was here?”” Daniel said.

His mother sighed.

“Daniel, don’t make assumptions.””

“Then explain.””

“About what?””

He looked at the documents on the table.

“The fake affair.””

Silence.

“The divorce papers.””

Silence.

“The documents with my stepsister’s name.””

Another silence.

Then his mother said something that shocked me.

“Claire told me she had no other choice.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I watched his hand tighten around the phone.

“You knew?””

“I knew she was unhappy.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His mother didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse than a lie.

Claire sat down slowly.

She looked defeated.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“You helped her.””

“I gave advice.””

“You helped her destroy someone innocent.””

His mother’s voice became defensive.

“I was protecting my son.””

I felt my stomach turn.

Protecting him?

By framing me?

By turning me into a target?

Daniel shook his head.

“From what?””

His mother answered immediately.

“From making another mistake.””

I frowned.

“What mistake?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at the phone.

His mother continued.

“You’ve always been too trusting.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Mom.””

“You let people use you. You let people take advantage of your kindness.””

“And you thought accusing my wife’s sister of having an affair would fix that?””

“She wasn’t supposed to get hurt.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She slapped me.””

His mother went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

Then said:

“She slapped her.””

A longer pause.

Then his mother replied:

“Claire said she lost control.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You believe her.””

“I believed she was desperate.””

The word hung in the air.

Desperate.

That was the excuse everyone gave when someone did something cruel.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Did you tell my mother about the affair before tonight?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Daniel already knew.

“You did.””

Claire whispered:

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

My heart sank.

Months.

This wasn’t a sudden decision.

This had been planned.

Daniel looked at Mark.

“You knew too?””

Mark nodded.

“I found out later.””

Daniel walked away from the table.

He looked overwhelmed.

“How many people knew my life was falling apart except me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Everyone.

Except him.

Then his mother spoke again.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

He put the phone closer.

“I’m listening.””

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

A pause.

“Your father left behind more than money.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

His mother’s voice became quieter.

“There are things you don’t know about your family.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked confused.

“What things?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“You need to come home.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I spent years believing everyone around me was honest.””

He looked at Claire.

“I was wrong.””

Then he looked at the phone.

“I’m done being protected by lies.””

Before his mother could respond, he ended the call.

The room stayed silent.

Then Mark spoke.

“She’s hiding something bigger.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“When Claire started planning this, she wasn’t just looking for a divorce settlement.””

“What was she looking for?””

Mark glanced at me.

Then away.

“The family trust.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What about it?””

Mark hesitated.

“The trust has a condition.””

I felt everyone’s attention shift.

“What condition?””

Mark looked at Daniel.

“If you divorce under circumstances where your spouse is considered betrayed, you lose control of certain assets.””

Daniel stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if someone else gets control instead.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Mark didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel understood.

“My mother.””

Mark nodded.

“She wanted you to believe Claire betrayed you. She wanted you angry enough to divorce quickly.””

Daniel looked sick.

“And Claire?””

Mark looked down.

“She gets money.””

“And my mother gets control.””

“Yes.””

The pieces finally connected.

Claire wasn’t just protecting herself.

She was being used.

But that didn’t make her innocent.

She agreed.

She helped.

She hurt me.

She chose the plan.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Did you know?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“At first…”

“At first?””

“I thought she was helping me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You thought destroying someone’s life was help?””

Claire covered her face.

“I was scared.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at me.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You were scared of losing money.””

Claire looked away.

“You were scared of losing control.””

She didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

Then suddenly, Mark’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His face changed.

“What?””

Daniel noticed.

“What happened?””

Mark turned the phone around.

It was a message.

From Daniel’s mother.

Only one sentence.

*“Get rid of the evidence before Daniel sees everything.””*

Nobody moved.

Daniel slowly took the phone.

He read the message.

Then he looked at Mark.

“She sent this to you?””

Mark nodded.

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Why?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why did she tell you to destroy evidence?””

Mark swallowed.

“Because she knows what’s on the drive.””

Daniel looked at the flash drive on the table.

The one Claire tried to hide.

The one that supposedly contained everything.

He picked it up.

“Then I’m watching it.””

Claire suddenly stood.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because if you watch that…”

She stopped.

Daniel waited.

“If you watch that, you won’t just find out what we did.””

The room went silent.

Claire whispered:

“You’ll find out what your father died trying to expose.””

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

And for the first time that night, even Claire looked like she was afraid of the truth.

Because whatever was on that drive…

May you like

It wasn’t just going to destroy a marriage.

It was going to destroy everything Daniel believed about his own family.
