Chapter 1: The Lie Behind The Slap
The first thing I felt was not the pain.
It was the silence.
The kind of silence that comes when everyone in the room witnesses something they were never supposed to see.
My stepsister Claire’s hand had just connected with my face.
The sound echoed through the living room of the house we had both grown up calling home.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I stood there frozen, my fingers slowly touching my burning cheek, trying to understand how a normal Tuesday evening had turned into a nightmare.
Claire was breathing heavily in front of me.
Her eyes were filled with anger.
Or at least, that was what she wanted everyone to believe.
“How dare you?”” she screamed.
Her voice shook the entire room.
“Under my own roof? While I’m working? You thought you could do this behind my back?””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She stepped closer.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Behind her stood her husband, Daniel.
His face was pale.
Confusion was written all over him.
He looked from Claire to me, waiting for someone to explain what was happening.
“I haven’t done anything,” I said quietly.
My voice almost sounded strange to my own ears.
“I came here because you asked me to watch the house while you were at work. That’s it.””
“Liar!””
Claire pointed at me.
“You always pretended to be innocent.””
Daniel frowned.
“Claire, what are you saying?””
She turned toward him with tears suddenly forming in her eyes.
A perfect performance.
A woman who looked heartbroken.
A wife who appeared betrayed.
“He’s been trying to get close to me,” she whispered.
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Who?””
Claire slowly pointed at me.
“Her.””
The room went completely still.
Daniel looked at me like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“No,” he said immediately.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Claire wiped away a fake tear.
“Of course you’d defend her. She’s your family.””
“She is your family too,” Daniel replied.
For a moment, Claire’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The anger.
The frustration.
She wasn’t hurt.
She was annoyed that Daniel wasn’t reacting the way she expected.
That was when I realized something was wrong.
This wasn’t an emotional explosion.
This was planned.
Claire wasn’t accusing me because she believed something happened.
She was building a story.
A story where she was the victim.
A story where Daniel would have no choice but to leave her.
And I would become the villain.
I looked directly at her.
“You don’t believe this happened.””
Her face tightened.
“What did you say?””
“You heard me.””
I stepped back, trying to keep my voice steady.
“You’re not angry because you think I betrayed you.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re angry because you need someone to blame.””
Daniel looked between us.
“What is she talking about?””
Claire immediately raised her voice.
“Don’t listen to her. She’s manipulating you.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was unbelievable.
She was accusing me of exactly what she was doing.
“Daniel,” I said, looking at him, “ask yourself something.””
He stayed quiet.
“Why tonight?””
Claire froze.
I continued.
“Why this exact moment? Why after you told me yesterday that you were thinking about checking your financial records?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Claire looked away.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
I noticed.
And Claire noticed that we noticed.
The room became heavier.
“What financial records?”” Daniel asked.
Claire’s face went pale.
“Nothing.””
“Claire.””
“Nothing!””
Her voice cracked.
But the confidence she had moments ago was disappearing.
I watched her carefully.
She had prepared the accusation.
She had prepared the tears.
She had prepared the story.
But she had forgotten one thing.
The truth had details.
And lies usually fell apart when someone asked simple questions.
Daniel walked closer.
“Why are you acting like this?””
Claire looked at him.
“I’m your wife.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Her jaw tightened.
Then suddenly, she pointed at me again.
“Don’t let her distract you!””
There it was.
The desperation.
She didn’t want him thinking.
She wanted him angry.
She wanted him focused on me.
Because if Daniel started looking at her instead, he might find something she didn’t want discovered.
I took a slow breath.
“You want everyone to believe I ruined your marriage.””
Claire stared at me.
“Yes.””
Her answer came too quickly.
Almost proudly.
“You destroyed my life.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
“She did.””
Claire’s expression changed.
“What?””
“You’re not accusing me because I did anything.””
I stepped forward.
“You’re accusing me because you need a reason for a divorce.””
Daniel went silent.
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
I continued.
“You already decided to leave him. But you don’t want to lose your money. You don’t want people asking why you walked away.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Claire?””
She looked nervous now.
“You’re crazy.””
“You needed a betrayal story.””
I looked directly into her eyes.
“So everyone would feel sorry for you.””
“Stop talking.””
“You needed everyone to believe you were the victim.””
“Stop!””
“But the truth is…”
I paused.
“You’re the one who cheated.””
The color disappeared from Claire’s face.
Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
“What did she just say?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Daniel took another step closer.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
“Is there something I should know?””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
And that was when I knew.
The perfect plan she created inside her head was beginning to collapse.
Because she had expected me to cry.
She had expected me to apologize.
She had expected Daniel to believe her.
She never expected him to ask questions.
Then Daniel’s phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked down at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
A message had appeared.
From an unknown number.
Only three words were written.
*“Check the camera.””*
May you like
Daniel looked up slowly.
And Claire’s face turned completely white.
