Chapter 4: The Signature That Was Never Mine

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Daniel held the document in his hands, staring at my name printed across the page.

My name.

My signature.

A legal agreement I had never seen before.

I felt my stomach twist.

“I never signed that,” I said.

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Claire looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at the paper.

And for the first time that night, she looked completely trapped.

“Maybe you forgot,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Excuse me?””

“You forget things all the time.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She was trying to create another story.

A story where I was careless.

A story where I was unreliable.

A story where everyone would question me.

Daniel noticed too.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Stop.””

Her expression changed.

“Stop what?””

“Trying to make this about her.””

The words hit her.

Because that was exactly what she had been doing all night.

Every time the truth got close, she pushed the attention toward me.

Daniel looked down at the document again.

“This agreement says she approved everything.””

He pointed at the signature.

“Why would she sign something involving my money?””

Claire swallowed.

“She wanted to help me.””

I almost laughed.

“Help you?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“You always wanted to prove you were the reasonable one.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I wanted to believe you were my sister.””

For a moment, something flashed across her face.

Regret.

Or maybe guilt.

But it disappeared quickly.

Daniel noticed.

He walked toward the dining table and placed the papers down.

“Where did you get this?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re acting like I committed a crime.””

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m acting like my wife created a fake story, attacked my stepsister, hid an affair, and somehow has paperwork with a signature nobody can explain.””

The silence afterward was brutal.

Claire looked away.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

“Of losing everything.””

That was the first honest thing she had said.

But it didn’t make me feel sorry for her.

Because she had almost destroyed someone else to save herself.

Daniel’s voice softened slightly.

“Claire, what did you think was going to happen?””

She looked at him.

“I thought you would hate me if you knew the truth.””

“And instead, you made me hate someone innocent.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””

I looked at her.

“You slapped me.””

She lowered her eyes.

“You accused me of something disgusting.””

“I know.””

“You wanted everyone to believe I was capable of betraying you.””

“I know.””

The way she admitted it almost hurt more.

Because she wasn’t denying it anymore.

She was simply accepting what she had done.

Daniel sat down.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not anymore.

Just broken.

Then his eyes moved back to the document.

“Where did this come from?””

Claire didn’t respond.

Daniel picked up his phone.

“I’m calling the lawyer.””

Claire immediately stood up.

“No.””

That reaction was instant.

Too instant.

Daniel looked up.

“Why not?””

“Because…”

She stopped.

Because she had no answer.

He unlocked his phone.

Claire moved toward him.

“Daniel, please.””

He looked at her.

“Please what?””

“I can explain everything.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The confidence was gone.

The performance was over.

Daniel called the number on the document.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A woman’s voice.

“Hello, this is Parker Legal.””

Daniel looked at the paper.

“I need to ask about a document submitted under my name.””

There was a pause.

“Can I have the client name?””

“Claire Bennett.””

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then the woman said something that made Daniel’s expression change.

“Yes. I see the file.””

Claire closed her eyes.

The lawyer continued.

“Are you calling about the divorce preparation?””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“Mr. Bennett, I should inform you that all documents were prepared based on information provided by your wife.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What information?””

The lawyer hesitated.

Then said:

“Your wife stated that she discovered an inappropriate relationship between you and your stepsister.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

Even after everything.

Hearing those words still hurt.

Because Claire had gone further than I realized.

She hadn’t just accused me privately.

She had built an entire legal case around a lie.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Was my stepsister’s name officially included?””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

The lawyer continued.

“Your wife provided dates, messages, and descriptions of events.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What messages?””

The lawyer answered carefully.

“She submitted screenshots.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

“What screenshots?”” Daniel asked.

The lawyer continued.

“Messages between you and her.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

I knew immediately.

Because Daniel and I barely texted.

Only family-related conversations.

The lawyer continued.

“Mr. Bennett, the documents also include a statement from your wife claiming she witnessed emotional and romantic communication.””

Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.

“You fabricated evidence?””

Claire’s face went pale.

“No.””

“Then what are those messages?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Send me the file.””

The lawyer paused.

“I can email everything.””

“Do it.””

After he ended the call, nobody spoke.

A minute later, Daniel’s phone received an email.

He opened it.

I watched his eyes move across the screen.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“They used your number.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“The messages came from your phone number.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked almost relieved.

For the first time in several minutes, a small spark returned to her eyes.

“There.””

She whispered.

“You see?””

Daniel looked at me.

But his expression wasn’t accusing.

It was confused.

Because he knew me.

He knew something didn’t add up.

“I never sent those messages.””

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“But they came from her number.””

I stared at her.

And then I understood.

This was never just about making people believe I had an affair.

She needed evidence.

Fake evidence.

And somehow, she had created messages that looked like they came from my phone.

Daniel looked at the email again.

“Claire…”

She froze.

“What?””

“How did you get access to her number?””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Because there was only one way.

Claire had been close enough.

Trusted enough.

To get what she needed.

I suddenly remembered something.

Three months earlier.

Claire had borrowed my phone.

She said hers was dead.

She needed to make an urgent call.

I had handed it to her without thinking.

At the time, I never imagined that small moment would become part of a plan.

Daniel looked at her.

“You used her phone.””

Claire looked away.

“I only needed a few minutes.””

My blood went cold.

“A few minutes to do what?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stood.

“Claire.””

Her eyes slowly lifted.

And then she said the one thing none of us expected.

“I wasn’t trying to frame her at first.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Claire’s face changed.

“I was trying to frame someone else.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

She looked toward the staircase.

Toward the locked office door upstairs.

Then she whispered:

“The person who knows where the real money went.””

Daniel went completely still.

“What money?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Because at that moment, a sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Someone had been in the house the entire time.

And they had heard everything.

Then a voice called down from the second floor.

“Claire…”

We all looked up.

May you like

The voice continued.

“You weren’t supposed to tell them yet.””
