Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Upstairs

The voice from upstairs froze all three of us.

For a moment, nobody even breathed.

Claire’s face lost every trace of confidence she had left.

Not anger.

Not panic.

Pure fear.

Daniel slowly turned toward the staircase.

“Who is up there?””

No answer.

Only footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming closer.

My heart started pounding.

The person walking down those stairs wasn’t surprised.

They weren’t confused.

They sounded like someone who had been waiting.

Someone who knew exactly what was happening.

Claire took one step backward.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“Who is in my house?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence answered everything.

Daniel moved toward the staircase.

I followed a few steps behind.

At the top of the stairs, a figure appeared.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Wearing a dark jacket.

The moment I saw him, I recognized him.

My breath caught.

“Mark?””

Claire closed her eyes.

Because she knew it was over.

Mark was Claire’s older brother from her father’s previous marriage.

My stepbrother.

The person she always described as the “only one who understood her.””

The person she called whenever she had problems.

The person who somehow always disappeared before family arguments became serious.

Daniel stared at him.

“Why are you in my house?””

Mark slowly walked down the stairs.

“I think the better question is why Claire has been lying to everyone.””

Claire immediately turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

Mark looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I covered for you long enough.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Mark reached the bottom step.

Then he looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words surprised me.

Because I wasn’t expecting an apology.

Not from him.

Not from anyone.

“What are you sorry for?”” I asked.

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“For knowing.””

The room went quiet.

“Knowing what?””

He took a deep breath.

“Knowing Claire was planning this.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You knew?””

Mark nodded.

“I knew she wanted a divorce. I knew she wanted money. I knew she was looking for a way to make herself look like the victim.””

He looked at Claire.

“But I didn’t know she would hurt you.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

Mark’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

“I’m not innocent.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then start explaining.””

Mark looked at the papers on the table.

“The divorce documents were only part of it.””

I felt a chill.

“What else was there?””

Mark reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

Claire immediately reacted.

“No.””

The word came out like a warning.

Daniel noticed.

“What’s on that?””

Mark held it tightly.

“Everything.””

Claire stepped toward him.

“You promised.””

Mark looked at her.

“I promised to help you fix your mistakes.””

He shook his head.

“Not destroy someone’s life.””

Claire’s face twisted.

“You’re the one who told me I deserved more.””

“I told you to leave if you were unhappy.””

“I was.””

“You were cheating.””

Her expression changed.

Mark continued.

“You weren’t unhappy. You were greedy.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“Greedy for what?””

Mark looked at him.

“Your inheritance.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

I looked at Claire.

She avoided my eyes.

Mark continued.

“When your father died, the company shares went into a trust. Claire knew if she divorced you before the trust restrictions ended, she could claim a much larger settlement.””

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

Mark pulled out another document.

“She spent months researching ways to protect herself financially.””

Claire’s voice became sharp.

“Stop talking.””

“No.””

Mark looked at her.

“You wanted to make everyone believe you were betrayed because you knew nobody would question the innocent wife.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“So the affair story…”

“Was a setup.””

Mark answered.

The words landed heavily.

Claire suddenly moved toward him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Claire.””

Mark stepped back.

“I understand perfectly.””

She looked at him.

“You helped me.””

“Yes.””

“And now you’re acting like you’re better than me?””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I’m acting like I finally realized how far you were willing to go.””

Claire’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think you’re saving them?””

She pointed at me.

“She always gets protected.””

I felt the familiar sting.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She still made it about me.

Daniel looked at her.

“Claire, stop.””

“No!””

She turned toward him.

“You don’t know what it was like growing up with her.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire laughed.

“You were always the favorite.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Her voice cracked.

“Our parents adopted you and suddenly everyone acted like I was supposed to be grateful.””

I stared at her.

Because that was the first time she had ever admitted what was really underneath her anger.

Not money.

Not Daniel.

Not the divorce.

Resentment.

Years of resentment.

But resentment didn’t excuse what she had done.

“You hated me because you thought I took something from you.””

Claire looked away.

“I watched everyone love you.””

I shook my head.

“You never tried to love me.””

The words hit her.

For a second, her expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

Daniel walked toward Mark.

“What exactly is on that drive?””

Mark looked at him.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

“Of how Claire created the entire story.””

Daniel took the drive.

Before he could insert it into his laptop, Claire suddenly moved.

Fast.

She grabbed the drive from his hand.

Everyone froze.

“Claire.””

Her breathing became heavy.

“You don’t understand what happens if you see this.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s exactly why I need to.””

She held the drive tightly.

“You think this makes me the villain?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

She looked at me.

“You have no idea what she did.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Claire pointed at me.

“You think I’m the only one hiding things?””

The accusation felt familiar.

Another attempt to shift blame.

But this time, there was something different.

Fear.

Real fear.

Daniel noticed too.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire looked at the drive.

Then at me.

Then at Daniel.

And slowly placed it on the table.

“I didn’t create this entire plan.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Someone else told me exactly what to do.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Claire looked toward Mark.

Mark’s face changed.

Because he knew the answer.

But he didn’t want to say it.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who told you?””

Claire whispered:

“The person who knew this family would never question me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mark finally said the name.

And the moment he did, I felt the entire world shift.

Because the person behind Claire’s plan wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been sitting beside us for years.

Someone who had always pretended to protect our family.

Someone who knew every weakness we had.

Mark looked at Daniel.

“Your mother.””

Daniel went completely still.

“My mother?””

Mark nodded.

“She started this.””

And then Daniel’s phone rang.

May you like

The caller ID appeared.

*Mom.*
