Chapter 2: The Footage She Never Expected
Daniel stared at his phone like the screen had just changed the entire meaning of the room.
Claire noticed.
Her eyes immediately locked onto the device in his hand.
“What was that?”” she asked.
Her voice was softer now.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Concerned.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He read the message again.
*Check the camera.*
Three simple words.
But they carried a warning.
A warning Claire seemed to understand before anyone else.
“Daniel,” she said quickly, stepping toward him.
“Don’t listen to random messages from strangers. Someone is probably trying to cause problems.””
He looked at her.
“Why are you scared of a camera?””
Claire froze.
“I’m not scared.””
“Then why did you react like you knew what it meant?””
“I didn’t.””
Her answer came too fast.
Daniel lowered his phone.
“Claire.””
The way he said her name was different.
The warmth was gone.
He wasn’t speaking to his wife.
He was speaking to someone he suddenly didn’t recognize.
I watched silently.
A part of me wanted to scream.
I wanted to tell him everything.
The years of manipulation.
The little comments Claire made whenever we were alone.
The way she always found a way to make me look selfish while pretending she was protecting the family.
But I knew better.
People like Claire didn’t lose because someone accused them.
They lost when evidence appeared.
And now, something had appeared.
Daniel looked at me.
“Do you know what camera they’re talking about?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Claire immediately interrupted.
“She’s lying.””
Daniel turned.
“Why would she know?””
“Because she’s trying to cover herself.””
I looked at Claire.
“You don’t even know what the camera shows.””
Her face tightened.
For a moment, she said nothing.
And that was enough.
Daniel noticed.
He slowly walked toward the hallway where the security monitor was mounted.
The house had cameras installed years ago after a burglary in the neighborhood.
Claire always complained about them.
She said they made the house feel like a prison.
I remembered her exact words.
“I hate those cameras. Nobody should feel watched inside their own home.””
At the time, I thought she just wanted privacy.
Now I wondered if there was another reason.
Daniel opened the security app on the tablet.
Claire followed him.
“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””
“Then you have nothing to worry about.””
“I’m your wife.””
“And I’m asking for the truth.””
That sentence hurt her more than any accusation could have.
Because Claire had spent years making sure everyone trusted her.
She built her entire identity around being the person who never did anything wrong.
The perfect daughter.
The perfect wife.
The perfect victim.
But perfect people were dangerous when they had something to hide.
Daniel tapped on the camera history.
“Which camera?”” he muttered.
I stepped closer.
“The living room camera.””
Claire looked at me sharply.
“How would you know?””
I stared back.
“Because that’s where you decided to attack me.””
Her expression changed.
Daniel looked at her.
“Attack?””
Claire quickly shook her head.
“She’s exaggerating.””
“Exaggerating what?””
“That I slapped her.””
Daniel looked at my cheek.
The redness was still there.
He didn’t say anything.
He didn’t need to.
The evidence was already on my face.
He opened the recording.
The screen loaded.
The three of us watched the same room from a different perspective.
A colder perspective.
A perspective where lies couldn’t hide.
The video started.
There I was.
Walking into the house.
Holding a grocery bag.
Completely unaware of what was coming.
Claire appeared seconds later.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
Daniel leaned closer.
“She wasn’t angry when she walked in.””
Claire’s face changed.
“She was pretending.””
Daniel ignored her.
The footage continued.
Claire stood in front of me.
She said something we couldn’t hear because the camera had no audio.
Then suddenly—
Her hand moved.
The sound from the recording filled the room.
A sharp crack.
Daniel flinched.
I saw his face change.
He had heard it.
He had seen it.
Claire’s carefully created image started breaking apart.
“She hit me first,” Claire whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because the footage showed the truth.
There was no argument before.
No secret meeting.
No inappropriate behavior.
No betrayal.
Just Claire walking in and attacking me.
Then the video continued.
Claire stepped backward.
She covered her mouth.
She looked directly at the camera.
Not at me.
Not at Daniel.
The camera.
My heart stopped.
Daniel noticed too.
“Wait.””
He paused the footage.
Claire’s face became completely pale.
“What?””
Daniel zoomed in.
The image was blurry, but clear enough.
Claire wasn’t looking at me.
She wasn’t looking around in shock.
She was checking if the camera had captured everything.
“She knew,” Daniel whispered.
I swallowed.
“She knew exactly where the camera was.””
Claire shook her head.
“No. That’s not what happened.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For once, Claire had no prepared answer.
But then she did what she always did.
She changed the battlefield.
She turned toward me.
“You planned this.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“You set me up.””
Daniel looked confused.
Claire stepped closer.
“You knew I was upset. You knew I would react. You wanted this footage.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You attacked me, and somehow that’s my plan?””
“Yes!””
Her voice became louder.
“You always wanted to destroy my marriage.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
Claire stopped.
“Why what?””
“Why would she want to destroy our marriage?””
The question hit harder than anything else.
Because Claire had spent years creating a story where I was jealous of her.
But Daniel was finally asking the one question she never prepared for.
Why?
Why would I do this?
Why would I risk everything?
Claire looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Exactly.””
The room became silent.
Then his phone vibrated again.
Another message.
He looked down.
This time, his face changed immediately.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He handed me the phone.
On the screen was a photo.
A photo of Claire.
Standing outside a hotel.
Holding hands with a man I had never seen before.
The date was visible.
Three weeks earlier.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Who is he?””
Claire stared at the picture.
Her breathing became uneven.
“I can explain.””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“No.””
He shook his head slowly.
“You already explained.””
Claire’s eyes filled with panic.
“Daniel—”
“You told me my stepsister was trying to ruin our marriage.””
He looked at me.
“But the person standing here with proof isn’t her.””
He turned back to Claire.
“It’s you.””
Claire’s tears finally appeared.
But this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.
Because everyone in that room understood something.
The slap was never about anger.
The accusation was never about betrayal.
It was a distraction.
A carefully planned performance designed to hide a different truth.
Daniel looked at the unknown number on his phone.
Then he typed a message.
*Who sent this?*
The reply came almost instantly.
Daniel read it.
And his face lost all color.
Because the person who had sent the photo was not a stranger.
It was someone Claire trusted completely.
Someone who knew every secret she had been hiding.
Someone who had been watching her for months.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*“I have proof of everything Claire did to both of you.””*
