Chapter 7: The Truth Inside The Drive
Daniel held the flash drive in his hand.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Nobody in the room did.
The small piece of plastic suddenly felt heavier than anything else we had uncovered that night.
Because this was no longer about Claire.
It was no longer about a fake affair or a broken marriage.
It was about Daniel’s father.
A man who had died years earlier.
A man everyone remembered as successful, respected, and honest.
A man Daniel had spent his entire life trying to make proud.
“What did my father know?”” Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved from Claire to Mark.
Then to me.
Like he was searching for someone who could give him an explanation.
But none of us had one.
Mark looked down.
“I don’t know everything.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Then tell me what you know.””
Mark took a deep breath.
“Your father discovered someone was moving money out of the family trust.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“He thought so too.””
Mark looked at the drive.
“That’s why he started investigating.””
Daniel stared.
“And then he died.””
The room went silent.
Nobody wanted to say the obvious.
But everyone was thinking it.
Daniel’s father hadn’t simply disappeared from the story.
His death had always been treated as an accident.
A sudden medical emergency.
Something nobody questioned.
Until now.
“You’re saying my father’s death wasn’t random?”” Daniel asked.
Mark hesitated.
“I’m saying he was afraid before he died.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Afraid of who?””
Mark looked at the staircase.
The same direction where Claire’s mother had disappeared earlier.
“Someone inside the family.””
My chest tightened.
Daniel looked at the flash drive again.
“Why did Claire have this?””
Mark answered quietly.
“Because she was supposed to destroy it.””
Claire looked away.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew what was on this?””
She didn’t respond.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
Even after everything, hearing her admit it felt different.
Because this wasn’t another accusation.
This was something real.
“You knew my father’s evidence existed,” Daniel said.
Claire nodded slowly.
“My mother found it first.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“My mother?””
“She discovered your father’s files after he died.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because she couldn’t.””
“Why?””
Claire swallowed.
“Because she was involved.””
The words barely left her mouth.
But they changed everything.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
His voice was almost a whisper.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Claire cried quietly.
“I didn’t want to believe it either.””
“Then why help her?””
“I thought I could get something out of it.””
Daniel stared at her.
There it was.
The truth.
Not an excuse.
Not a misunderstanding.
Greed.
“I thought if I helped her, she would give me enough money to leave,” Claire admitted.
I looked at her.
“You knew she was hurting people.””
Claire lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“And you still helped.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked devastated.
Not because he loved her anymore.
Because he finally understood who she was.
He walked toward the laptop on the table.
“Enough.””
He inserted the flash drive.
The screen lit up.
Several folders appeared.
*TRUST RECORDS*
*FINANCIAL TRANSFERS*
*PRIVATE INVESTIGATION*
*LAST MESSAGE FROM ROBERT BENNETT*
Daniel froze.
His father’s name was on the screen.
His hand stopped moving.
“What is this?””
Mark walked closer.
“Open the last one.””
Daniel clicked.
A video file appeared.
The date was from six months before his father died.
He pressed play.
The screen showed an older man sitting behind a desk.
Daniel’s father.
Robert Bennett.
Older.
Tired.
But alert.
Daniel stopped breathing.
He hadn’t seen his father’s face on video in years.
“Daniel…”
His father’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened that prevented me from telling you myself.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
The room disappeared.
For everyone except him.
Robert continued.
“I discovered someone has been accessing the family trust without permission.””
The video showed documents spread across his desk.
“I thought it was an employee at first.””
He paused.
“But the evidence led me somewhere I never wanted to look.””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the screen.
His father looked directly into the camera.
“The person responsible is someone you trust.””
The video stopped.
Buffering.
Everyone waited.
Then it continued.
Robert leaned closer.
“I know you will want to protect this person because they are family.””
Daniel’s breathing became uneven.
“But protecting someone who betrays you only allows them to hurt you again.””
The screen showed a folder.
A name appeared.
Daniel leaned closer.
Then froze.
Because the name wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t Mark.
It wasn’t even his mother.
It was mine.
My name.
I stared at the screen.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
Confusion crossed his face.
The video continued.
Robert’s voice became quieter.
“The person being used as a scapegoat is innocent.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked back at the screen.
Robert continued.
“They will try to make you believe she betrayed you.””
My heart started racing.
“Your mother will tell you she is protecting the family.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“But the truth is…”
The video suddenly glitched.
The image froze.
Then disappeared.
A corrupted file message appeared.
“No.””
Daniel clicked again.
Nothing.
Mark cursed quietly.
“The file is damaged.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Can you fix it?””
“Maybe.””
“How long?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stood there, staring at the frozen screen.
Because his father had been trying to tell him something.
Something about me.
Something about his mother.
Something that happened before any of us understood.
Then my phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked at me.
I pulled it out.
Unknown number.
Another message.
My hands went cold when I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A photo of me.
Taken years ago.
Before I even met Daniel.
Before Claire accused me.
Before any of this started.
Underneath the photo was a message.
*“Ask Daniel’s mother why she knows your real identity.””*
I looked up.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Something from my childhood.
Something my parents always refused to explain.
The reason my adoption records had been sealed.
The reason certain family documents disappeared.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
Then looked at me.
“What does this mean?””
I stared at the photograph.
A photograph I had never seen before.
A photograph that shouldn’t exist.
And then another message appeared.
This time, it contained a name.
A name that made Claire step back in shock.
Because she recognized it.
The sender wrote:
*“Your stepsister doesn’t know the whole truth. Neither does Daniel.””*
May you like
Then:
*“You were never adopted by accident.””*
