Chapter 6

We turned the embezzlement evidence over to Mark's boss and the police immediately.
Mark's boss was furious. But he was also grateful.
We had given him the proof he needed to press charges and recover the stolen money.
The police launched a full investigation.
They searched Mark's apartment. They seized his computers. They interviewed his former colleagues.
And they found more.
More hidden accounts.
More evidence of fraud.
More lies.
Mark was arrested again.
This time, the charges were much more serious.
Embezzlement. Fraud. Money laundering.
Domestic assault.
And with Lisa's evidence, fraud against her as well.
His bail was set at two million dollars.
He couldn't pay it.
He stayed in jail.
And for the first time since this all began, I felt safe.
The divorce proceedings moved quickly.
Mark didn't have a leg to stand on.
With the assault. With the affair. With the fraud. With the embezzlement.
There was no way he could win.
His lawyer tried to negotiate.
He wanted joint custody. He wanted to keep some of his assets. He wanted to avoid jail time.
We said no.
We had all the cards.
And we were going to play them.
The trial was set for six months later.
Mark was charged with multiple felonies.
If convicted, he could be looking at ten to fifteen years in prison.
In the meantime, life went on.
I went back to work.
I had been a stay-at-home mom for the last five years, but before that I had been a successful marketing executive.
I updated my resume. I started networking.
And within a month, I had a job offer.
A good one.
Better than my old job.
Higher pay. More flexibility.
I took it.
It felt good to be working again. To be earning my own money. To be independent.
The kids adjusted well.
They loved their new routine. They loved having Lisa around. They loved their school. They loved their friends.
They asked about their father sometimes.
I told them he was going through some hard things. That he needed some time. That he still loved them.
I didn't tell them the truth.
They were too young.
But someday, when they were older, I would tell them everything.
They deserved to know.
Lisa's life was changing too.
She had gotten her own place. She had started her own business—a small marketing consulting firm.
She was doing well.
And she was happy.
We had become best friends.
It was strange to think about how we had met.
The wife and the mistress.
Enemies by all rights.
But we had turned that into something beautiful.
Something strong.
Something real.
One evening, we were sitting on the couch, watching a movie after the kids had gone to bed.
Lisa turned to me.
"Can I ask you something?" she said.
"Sure."
"Do you ever think about what would have happened if... if things had been different? If Mark had never lied to me? If I had never gotten involved?"
I thought about it.
I thought about the life I had before.
A life built on lies.
A husband who didn't love me.
A future that was never real.
"No," I said. "I don't. Because even though this has been the hardest thing I've ever been through, it's also been the best. Because it led me here. To this life. To my job. To my freedom. To you."
I looked at her.
"You're my best friend, Lisa," I said. "I don't know what I would have done without you."
Lisa's eyes filled with tears.
"You're my best friend too," she said. "And I'm so grateful. For everything."
We hugged.
And for a moment, everything felt perfect.
But I knew it wasn't over.
The trial was coming.
Mark was going to fight.
And there would be more pain before it was all over.
But I was ready.
I was strong.
I had my children.
I had my friends.
I had Lisa.
May you like
And I had nothing left to lose.
