Chapter 14

Ten years had passed since that night in the restaurant.
Ten years since my life had fallen apart.
And ten years since it had really begun.
I was sitting in my office, looking out the window at the city below.
I was now the vice president of marketing at my company. I had a team of twenty people working for me. I was respected. Successful.
Lisa was doing even better. Her company had grown to fifty employees. She had offices in three cities. She was a well-known entrepreneur.
Emma was in college. She was studying pre-med. She wanted to be a doctor. She wanted to help people.
Ethan was in high school. He was a star athlete. He wanted to be a teacher. He wanted to work with kids.
They were amazing.
And Lisa and I were still happy.
Still in love.
We had been married for eight years now.
Our love had only grown stronger with time.
We had been through so much together.
And we had come out stronger.
Better.
Happier.
That night, we had a big family dinner.
Everyone was there.
Emma was home from college.
Ethan was there, of course.
Mark was there. He had become a regular part of our family gatherings. He had a good life. He was happy. He had even met someone. A nice woman who worked at the community center with him.
My parents were there.
Lisa's parents were there.
Mark's parents were there.
Our friends were there.
It was a full house.
Full of love.
Full of laughter.
Full of life.
After dinner, Lisa pulled me aside.
She had something in her hand.
An envelope.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Open it."
I opened it.
Inside were two tickets.
To Italy.
First class.
For a month.
"Lisa..." I whispered.
"We've been working so hard," she said. "The kids are older now. Emma's in college. Ethan can stay with Mark and my parents. We deserve a vacation. A real vacation. Just the two of us."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Italy," I said. "I've always wanted to go to Italy."
"I know," she said. "That's why I booked it."
She kissed me.
"I love you," she said.
"I love you too," I said.
We went back to the party.
We told everyone the news.
Everyone cheered.
Emma hugged me. "You deserve it, Mom. Both of you."
Ethan nodded. "Have fun! Bring me back something cool!"
Mark raised his glass. "To Lisa and Sarah. You two deserve every bit of happiness in the world."
We clinked glasses.
And as I looked around the room at all the people I loved, I thought about that night in the restaurant.
About the soup.
About the slaps.
About the moment my life had changed forever.
I had thought it was the end.
But it was really the beginning.
The beginning of something beautiful.
Something I could never have imagined.
May you like
Something better than anything I had ever dreamed of.
