Chapter 10

A year passed.
Life was everything I had ever dreamed it could be.
My career was thriving. I had been promoted twice. I was making more money than Mark ever had.
Lisa's business was booming. She had three employees now. She was getting national recognition.
The kids were doing great. Emma was excelling in school. Ethan was playing soccer and making friends. They were happy. Healthy. Loved.
Lisa and I were happier than ever.
We had our fights, of course. No relationship is perfect.
But we communicated. We listened to each other. We respected each other.
We loved each other.
It was everything my marriage to Mark had never been.
We had talked about getting married.
But we weren't in any rush.
We were happy just being together.
Just being a family.
One day, I got a letter from the prison.
From Mark.
I stared at it for a long time before opening it.
Lisa found me holding it.
"Do you want me to open it?" she asked.
I shook my head.
"No," I said. "I need to do this."
I opened the letter.
*Dear Sarah,*
*It's been a year since the trial. I've been in prison, thinking. About everything I've done. About everyone I've hurt.*
*I'm not going to ask for your forgiveness. I know I don't deserve it. But I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry. Truly sorry. For the affair. For the soup. For the fraud. For everything.*
*I've been taking classes in here. Anger management. Financial management. Therapy. I'm trying to become a better man. The man I should have been.*
*I think about the kids every day. I miss them. I want to be part of their lives. When they're older, if they want to see me... I hope you'll let them. I'll understand if you don't. But I had to ask.*
*I'm glad you're happy. I'm glad you found someone. You deserve it. You always did.*
*Take care of yourself. And take care of our children.*
*Sincerely,*
*Mark*
I put the letter down.
Lisa put her arm around me.
"What did he say?"
"He's sorry," I said. "He wants to see the kids when they're older. He's glad I'm happy."
Lisa nodded.
"What are you going to do?"
I thought about it.
I thought about Mark.
About the man who had destroyed my life.
About the man who had made it possible for me to find a better one.
I didn't forgive him.
I would never forgive him for what he had done.
But I didn't hate him anymore.
Hate took too much energy.
And I was too busy living my life to waste any of it hating him.
"When the kids are older," I said. "If they want to see him... I'll let them. It's their choice. Not mine. Not his."
Lisa nodded.
"That's fair."
I folded the letter and put it away.
I would keep it.
Not as a reminder of the pain.
But as a reminder of how far I had come.
Of how much my life had changed.
Of how much I had grown.
That evening, we had a family dinner.
Emma chattered about her day at school.
Ethan told us about his soccer game.
Lisa and I listened, smiling at each other across the table.
After dinner, we read the kids bedtime stories.
Then we sat on the couch together, watching a movie.
I leaned my head on Lisa's shoulder.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too," she said.
She kissed the top of my head.
And as I sat there, surrounded by the people I loved most in the world, I felt completely at peace.
The past was the past.
The pain was behind me.
And the future...
The future was bright.
Full of love.
Full of hope.
Full of possibility.
May you like
And I couldn't wait to live it.
