Chapter 19

Thirty years had passed since that night in the restaurant.

I was sixty-five years old.

Lisa was sixty-three.

We were still going strong.

We still walked on the beach every morning.

We still loved each other more than ever.

Our grandchildren were growing up.

Lily was fifteen now. A beautiful young woman. She wanted to be a writer. She wanted to tell stories of hope and redemption.

The twins were twelve.

Ethan's son was ten.

They were all amazing.

And we had great-grandchildren on the way.

Lily wasn't pregnant, of course. But Emma was expecting her fourth child.

Our family was growing.

And we were all happy.

Mark was seventy now. He was retired. He and Susan spent their time traveling and volunteering. They were happy.

We had all found our peace.

One day, we had a big family reunion.

Everyone was there.

All of our children and grandchildren.

Mark and Susan.

All of our parents—those who were still with us.

Our friends.

It was a celebration.

Of life.

Of love.

Of family.

Of how far we had come.

Mark came over to Lisa and me.

He raised his glass.

"To Sarah and Lisa," he said. "Thirty years ago, I did the worst thing I've ever done. I hurt you both. I destroyed my family. And I thought my life was over."

He paused.

"But instead of destroying me, you gave me a chance to redeem myself. You forgave me. You let me be part of my children's lives. You let me be part of this family. And I will be forever grateful."

He looked at us.

"You two are the strongest, most amazing women I've ever known. You took the worst thing I ever did and turned it into something beautiful. You built a family. You built a legacy. And you taught me the true meaning of forgiveness and redemption."

He raised his glass higher.

"To Sarah and Lisa. To family. To second chances. To love."

Everyone cheered.

We clinked glasses.

And as I looked around the room at all the people I loved, I thought about that night in the restaurant.

About the boiling soup.

About the slaps.

About the moment my life had changed forever.

I had thought it was the end of the world.

But it was really the beginning.

May you like

The beginning of the best part of my life.
