Chapter 17

Twenty years had passed since that night in the restaurant.
I was fifty-five years old.
Lisa was fifty-three.
We were retired now.
We had sold our businesses. We had more money than we could ever spend.
We spent our time traveling. Spending time with our family. Volunteering.
We had started a foundation.
The Sarah and Lisa Foundation.
We helped women who were going through divorce. Women who were victims of domestic abuse. Women who needed a second chance.
We provided legal help. Counseling. Job training. Financial support.
We wanted to help other women going through what we had gone through.
We wanted to give them hope.
We wanted to show them that they could survive. That they could thrive. That their lives could be even better after the pain.
It was our way of giving back.
Our way of turning our pain into something good.
Emma was still a doctor. She was now the head of pediatrics at her hospital. She and David had two more children. Twins. A boy and a girl.
Lily was five now. The twins were two.
They were the light of our lives.
Ethan was a teacher. He had been promoted to principal. He and Maria had been married for five years. They had a baby boy.
Our family was big. Loud. Loving.
Perfect.
Mark was sixty now. He was still working at the community center, but he was thinking about retiring too. He and Susan were happy. They loved being grandparents to our grandchildren. They were part of the family.
We had all come so far.
From that night in the restaurant.
From the pain and betrayal and anger.
To this.
To love. To family. To peace.
To forgiveness.
It was a journey none of us could have predicted.
May you like
But it was a journey worth taking.
