Chapter 18

Twenty-five years had passed.

I was sixty years old.

Lisa was fifty-eight.

We were still happy.

Still in love.

We had slowed down now.

We spent most of our time at our beach house.

We walked on the beach every morning.

We read books. We gardened. We cooked.

We spent as much time as possible with our grandchildren.

Lily was ten now. She was smart and kind and beautiful. Just like her mother.

The twins were seven. Energetic and funny.

Ethan's son was five. Sweet and curious.

They were all growing up so fast.

One day, Lily came to me.

She was sitting beside me on the porch, looking out at the ocean.

"Grandma Sarah?" she said.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Grandma Lisa told me a story once. About when you and Grandpa Mark were married. And about the soup. And about how you met Grandma Lisa."

I looked at her.

Lisa had told her the story. Age-appropriate, of course. But she had told her the truth.

"She did?"

Lily nodded. "She said that sometimes bad things happen, but they can lead to good things. That even when your heart is broken, you can find love again."

She looked at me with her big, innocent eyes.

"Is that true?"

I thought about it.

I thought about that night in the restaurant.

About the soup.

About the slaps.

About the pain.

And then I thought about Lisa.

About our life together.

About our children.

About our grandchildren.

About the love and happiness and peace we had found.

"Yes, sweetie," I said. "It's true. Sometimes the worst things that happen to us can lead to the best things. Sometimes you have to lose everything to find out what really matters. Sometimes your heart has to break to make room for something even better."

Lily thought about that.

"Like how you lost Grandpa Mark but found Grandma Lisa?"

I smiled.

"Exactly like that."

Lily nodded, satisfied with the answer.

She leaned her head on my shoulder.

"I love you, Grandma Sarah."

"I love you too, sweetie."

We sat there together, watching the waves, enjoying the quiet.

And I felt at peace.

May you like

Completely, perfectly at peace.
