Chapter 2

The police arrived quickly.

The restaurant was still silent, everyone watching the drama unfold.

Two officers walked in, took one look at the scene—my red, soup-stained skin, Mark's red cheek, Lisa clutching her face, the papers scattered across the table—and started asking questions.

"Ma'am," one officer said, looking at me. "Are you okay?"

I nodded, even though I wasn't.

"My husband threw hot soup at me," I said, my voice steady. "I have witnesses. Everyone in this restaurant saw it."

The officer looked at Mark.

"Is that true, sir?"

Mark opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked around at all the watching faces. At his boss. At his family.

He couldn't deny it.

"It was an accident," he said finally. "I was... I was upset. I didn't mean to hit her."

"Everyone saw you throw it," Lisa said suddenly. She was still holding her cheek, but her eyes were full of anger now. Anger at Mark. "You threw it right at her. You shouted 'just leave' and threw it."

Mark stared at her, betrayed.

The officer nodded. He took our statements. He interviewed witnesses. He took photographs of my burns.

Then he turned to Mark.

"Sir, you're under arrest for domestic assault."

He cuffed Mark.

Mark's face went from white to red.

"You can't do this!" he shouted. "She slapped me! Did you see what she did to my face?"

"She defended herself after you assaulted her with a dangerous weapon," the officer said calmly. "And we have multiple witnesses confirming your actions. Let's go."

They led Mark out.

He looked back at me, his eyes full of hatred.

This wasn't over.

I knew that.

But for now, he was gone.

Lisa was gathering her papers, her hands shaking.

She looked at me.

For a moment, we just stared at each other.

The wife and the mistress.

Two women who had both been played by the same man.

"I didn't know," she said quietly. "About any of this. He told me you were dying. That you had months left. That he was staying with you until the end because he didn't want to leave you alone. I... I believed him."

She looked down at the papers in her hands.

"He borrowed two hundred thousand dollars from me," she said. "Said he needed it for your medical bills. For experimental treatments. I gave it to him because I thought I was helping. I thought I was doing something good."

Her voice broke.

"And now I find out his wife isn't even sick. That he's been lying to me this whole time. That I've been... I've been the other woman."

I looked at her.

I should have hated her.

She had slept with my husband. She had helped him destroy my marriage.

But as I looked at her, I saw something I recognized.

Pain.

Betrayal.

Heartbreak.

She was a victim too.

Just like me.

"He's a liar," I said. "And a thief. And he's going to pay for what he's done. To both of us."

Lisa looked at me, surprised.

Then she nodded.

"I want my money back," she said. "And I want him to pay for lying to me. For using me."

"Then maybe we should work together," I said.

She stared at me.

The wife and the mistress.

Allies.

It was the last thing either of us would have expected an hour ago.

But here we were.

Mark's family came over then.

His mother was crying. His father looked furious. His sister looked shocked.

"Honey," his mother said, reaching for me. "Are you okay? We had no idea. We would never have come if we knew..."

"I know," I said. "You didn't know. None of you did."

His father stepped forward.

"That boy," he said, his voice shaking with anger. "I raised him better than this. I'm so sorry, sweetheart. So sorry."

His sister hugged me.

"We're on your side," she said. "Whatever you need. Whatever we can do."

I nodded, tears stinging my eyes.

Mark's family had always been good to me. They loved me. They loved my children.

And now they had seen the real Mark.

The monster he had become.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Mark's boss came over next.

He looked grim.

"I saw everything," he said. "And I want to help. Whatever you need. Testimony. Financial records. Anything. Mark is fired, effective immediately. And I'll be cooperating fully with any investigation."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

The paramedics arrived then. They checked my burns, dressed them, told me I needed to go to the hospital to make sure there was no permanent damage.

Lisa spoke up.

"I'll drive you," she said. "If you want."

I looked at her.

"Okay," I said.

As we walked out of the restaurant, I looked back at the table where my life had fallen apart.

The white tablecloth was stained with soup.

The papers were scattered everywhere.

And my wedding ring...

I looked down at my hand.

I pulled the ring off.

I set it on the nearest table.

I was done with Mark.

I was done with the lies.

I was done with being the victim.

From now on, I was going to be the one in control.

May you like

And Mark was going to learn exactly what happened when you messed with the wrong woman.
