Chapter 13

Mark stayed true to his word.
He didn't push the kids.
He sent them letters. He sent them birthday presents. He let them know he was there if they wanted him.
Slowly, the kids started to respond.
First, it was just text messages.
Then phone calls.
Then occasional visits.
It was awkward at first.
But slowly, they built a relationship.
Not the father-child relationship they might have had if things had been different.
But something.
Something real.
Something that worked for all of them.
Mark was respectful. He never tried to replace Lisa. He never tried to undermine our family.
He was just... Mark.
Their father.
A part of their lives, but not the center of it.
And that was okay.
It was more than okay.
It was healthy.
One day, Emma came to me.
She was sixteen now. A young woman.
"Mom," she said. "I've been thinking. And I want to change my last name. To yours. And Lisa's."
I stared at her.
"Really?"
She nodded. "Mark is my father. And I love him in my own way. But you and Lisa are my moms. You're the ones who raised me. You're the ones who are always there for me. You're my real family. And I want my name to reflect that."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Emma, that's... that's the most beautiful thing you could ever say."
She smiled. "Is that a yes?"
"That's a yes," I said.
Ethan heard about it.
"I want to change my name too," he said. "I want to be like you and Mom and Emma."
So we did it.
We went to court.
We changed their names.
Emma and Ethan became our children in every sense of the word.
Legally. Emotionally. Completely.
Mark was okay with it.
"I understand," he said when I told him. "They're your kids. You raised them. You love them. They should have your name."
He paused.
"And I'm still their dad," he said. "Nothing will change that."
"No," I said. "Nothing will change that."
And it was true.
We had found a way to make it work.
To co-parent.
To be a family.
An unconventional family.
May you like
But a family nonetheless.
