Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden In My Family
I stared at the document in Daniel's hands.
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
My own name.
My father's name.
Evelyn's signature.
All connected on one page.
A page that shouldn't have existed.
"Claire.""
Daniel's voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
I looked at him.
"What?""
He turned the document toward me.
At the top was a date.
A date from before I ever met him.
Before our first date.
Before our wedding.
Before I even knew Evelyn existed.
My eyes moved down the page.
*Subject: Claire Morgan.*
My stomach twisted.
"Why does she have a file about me?""
Nobody answered.
Richard looked ashamed.
Daniel looked confused.
And I felt something I hadn't felt since this nightmare began.
Fear.
Not fear of Evelyn.
Not fear of losing my marriage.
Fear of realizing my entire life might have been touched by a plan I never knew existed.
"Richard," I said.
"Explain.""
The older man took a slow breath.
"Your father and Daniel's grandfather were business partners.""
I frowned.
"My father?""
He nodded.
"Years ago.""
I shook my head.
"My father never mentioned any of this.""
Richard looked down.
"Because he didn't know everything either.""
Daniel picked up another paper.
"What is this?""
Richard looked at it.
"A legal agreement.""
Daniel read silently.
Then his face changed.
"Claire's father was connected to the trust?""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
I stepped back.
"What does my family have to do with Daniel's inheritance?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your father was the only person who knew the original conditions of the trust.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"And Evelyn?""
"She knew that.""
"So she chose me?""
Richard didn't answer.
But his silence did.
My heart sank.
The marriage.
The relationship.
The family dinners.
The way Evelyn had acted like she wanted to know me.
Had any of it been real?
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you know any of this?""
His face tightened.
"No.""
I searched his eyes.
This time, I believed him.
Because he looked just as betrayed as I felt.
Richard continued.
"After your father died, Evelyn became obsessed with finding the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The original trust records.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why?""
"Because there was a hidden condition.""
Richard looked at him.
"Your grandfather didn't trust Evelyn.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
"He knew her personality.""
The words were painful.
"He knew she wanted control.""
I thought about everything.
The fake DNA report.
The custody plan.
The lies.
It all matched.
Richard opened another folder.
"Your grandfather left instructions.""
Daniel took the paper.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then widened.
"What?""
"What is it?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
Richard spoke.
"Your grandfather predicted that someone might try to manipulate Daniel's marriage.""
I felt a chill.
"He knew?""
Richard nodded.
"He left protection.""
Daniel handed me the document.
I read the words.
*If anyone attempts to separate Daniel Parker from his lawful spouse through deception, the trust shall be frozen until the truth is proven.*
My breath caught.
"So Evelyn couldn't get the money.""
Richard shook his head.
"Not directly.""
"Then why do all this?""
"Because she believed if she controlled the child...""
He looked at my stomach.
"She controlled the future.""
I placed a hand over my belly.
The anger inside me burned.
This wasn't about family.
It was never about family.
My child had become a target before he was even born.
That evening, Daniel and I returned home.
Neither of us spoke much during the drive.
There were too many questions.
Too many wounds.
When we arrived, Daniel stopped before opening the door.
"I need to tell you something.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He stared at the house.
"The first time I met you...""
I waited.
"My mother already knew about you.""
My chest tightened.
"What?""
"She suggested I go to that restaurant.""
I stared at him.
"The restaurant where we met?""
He nodded.
"I thought it was random.""
A bitter smile appeared.
"Apparently nothing was random.""
I felt a strange emptiness.
"Daniel.""
"I swear I didn't know.""
"I know.""
And I meant it.
But knowing didn't make it hurt less.
He looked at me.
"I thought I found you.""
His voice broke.
"I thought I chose you.""
I looked away.
"But she chose the situation.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
We stood there silently.
Then Daniel said something I didn't expect.
"I don't care about the inheritance.""
I looked at him.
"I know.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"I need you to know.""
He looked at my stomach.
"The only thing I care about is making sure our son is safe.""
The word "our" hurt.
Because a part of me had been terrified that Daniel might never say that again.
But I wasn't ready to forget.
Not yet.
"I need time.""
He nodded.
"I'll give you time.""
The next morning, we went to meet Rebecca.
Not because we trusted her.
Because she was the only person who could explain how deep this plan went.
She was waiting at a quiet park.
When she saw us, she looked nervous.
Very different from the confident woman who had helped Evelyn.
"I didn't think you would come.""
Daniel stopped several feet away.
"Start talking.""
Rebecca looked down.
"I deserve that.""
"Yes.""
The answer was immediate.
She flinched.
"I know what I did was wrong.""
"You helped my mother destroy my wife.""
"I know.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"You watched me hurt her.""
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
I studied her.
"Why?""
She looked at me.
And what she said surprised me.
"Because I was scared of her.""
I frowned.
"Your own mother?""
Rebecca nodded.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She took a deep breath.
"My mother doesn't threaten people with violence.""
She looked away.
"She destroys their lives quietly.""
That sounded exactly like Evelyn.
Rebecca continued.
"When I was eighteen, I found out she had been hiding letters from my father.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Your father?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Rebecca swallowed.
"Because he was trying to leave her.""
I felt a chill.
"What happened?""
"He disappeared.""
Silence.
Daniel stared at her.
"Disappeared?""
Rebecca nodded.
"I spent years thinking he abandoned us.""
She looked at him.
"Then I found the same thing you did.""
"The truth?""
"Yes.""
She wiped her eyes.
"He had been trying to expose her.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did she do?""
Rebecca looked at him.
"She made sure nobody believed him.""
A cold silence followed.
Then Rebecca reached into her bag.
"I brought this.""
She handed Daniel a small envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
"What is this?""
Rebecca looked terrified.
"Everything.""
"Everything?""
"Emails. Bank records. Names.""
She looked at me.
"The person who helped my mother fake the DNA test.""
My heart started pounding.
"Who?""
Rebecca hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The doctor who handled your pregnancy records.""
I froze.
"My doctor?""
Rebecca nodded.
"He's the one who was supposed to make sure the custody case would succeed.""
Daniel grabbed the flash drive.
"Why are you telling us now?""
Rebecca looked down.
"Because I found out what my mother planned after the baby is born.""
A terrible feeling filled the air.
"What plan?""
Rebecca looked at my stomach.
And her voice shook.
"She wasn't planning to take custody after the birth.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then what?""
Rebecca whispered:
"She planned to make sure the baby was never registered as yours.""
The world seemed to stop.
Daniel's face turned pale.
"What?""
Rebecca looked at us.
"She already prepared the paperwork.""
My hands trembled.
"How?""
Rebecca took a breath.
"Because she found someone willing to sign.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Who?""
Rebecca's eyes filled with fear.
Then she said:
"Someone who has been pretending to help you this entire time.""
I felt a cold wave move through me.
"Who?""
Rebecca looked directly at Daniel.
And answered:
"Your lawyer.""
Daniel froze.
May you like
Because the man who was supposed to protect our family...
Had been helping destroy it from the inside.
