Chapter 1: The Report That Changed Everything

The day my husband accused me of cheating was supposed to be the day we celebrated becoming parents.

Instead, I was standing in our living room with one hand covering my swollen stomach and the other pressed against my burning cheek.

The DNA report was lying on the floor between us.

A single sentence stared back at me.

*NOT A MATCH.*

I had imagined many moments during my pregnancy.

I imagined Daniel placing his hand on my belly when the baby kicked.

I imagined him crying when he held our son for the first time.

I imagined us becoming the family we had spent five years building.

I never imagined him looking at me like I was a stranger.

I never imagined his hand striking my face.

The sound of the slap had echoed through the entire house.

For a few seconds, everything went silent.

The pain came first.

Then confusion.

Then the terrifying realization that the man standing in front of me—the man I had trusted with my life—was capable of hurting me.

Daniel's chest rose and fell rapidly.

His face was twisted with anger.

"Five years, Claire," he shouted.

"Five years I believed you were the woman I married.""

I stared at him, unable to process his words.

"Daniel..."" My voice cracked.

"What are you talking about?""

He pointed at the paper on the floor.

"That.""

I looked down.

"The baby isn't mine.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"The test proves it."" His voice became colder.

"You cheated on me.""

A wave of disbelief rushed through me.

I placed both hands over my stomach instinctively.

"No. Daniel, that's impossible.""

"Don't lie to me!""

He stepped closer.

I backed away.

Not because I was afraid of the accusation.

Because I was afraid of him.

"I would never do that to you," I whispered.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Then explain the report.""

"I don't know what this is.""

His jaw tightened.

"You expect me to believe that?""

Before I could answer, a voice came from the doorway.

A voice that made my entire body go cold.

"I told you.""

I slowly turned.

Daniel's mother, Evelyn, stood there.

She wasn't shocked.

She wasn't upset.

She wasn't even surprised.

She was watching me like she had been waiting for this moment.

"I told you something was wrong with her," Evelyn said softly.

Her eyes moved to my stomach.

"Some women are very good at pretending.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Evelyn...""

She tilted her head.

"Don't call me like I'm your family.""

Five years.

Five years I had called her Mom.

Five years I had cooked Thanksgiving dinner with her.

Five years I had listened when she complained about feeling lonely after Daniel moved away.

And now she stood there watching her son destroy me.

Daniel picked up the report.

"Mom helped me get the test done," he said.

I looked at Evelyn.

"What?""

She smiled slightly.

"I was only trying to protect my son.""

A cold feeling spread through me.

"Protect him from what?""

"From making the biggest mistake of his life.""

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than the slap.

Because part of him believed her.

I slowly bent down and picked up the report.

My fingers trembled.

But I forced myself to read every line.

The names.

The dates.

The identification numbers.

The sample information.

Something caught my attention.

A tiny detail.

A detail that made my heartbeat slow.

Because something was wrong.

Very wrong.

"Daniel," I said quietly.

He looked at me.

"What?""

I held up the paper.

"Where did this sample come from?""

His expression changed slightly.

"What?""

"The sample.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Who collected it?""

Nobody answered.

And that silence told me everything.

Two weeks earlier, Evelyn had come to my house.

She had brought coffee.

She had acted unusually sweet.

I remembered it clearly.

She had sat beside me on the couch and touched my pregnant belly.

"My grandson," she had whispered.

At the time, I thought she finally accepted me.

I was wrong.

"I need a small favor," she had said.

I looked at her.

"What kind of favor?""

She smiled.

"Nothing serious. I'm doing a family ancestry project.""

She had laughed.

"Everyone in the family is giving a hair sample.""

I remembered feeling confused.

But I trusted her.

I pulled a strand of hair from my brush and handed it to her.

Then she had asked Daniel for his.

She told him it was for a health history record.

He didn't question it.

Neither did I.

Until now.

I stared at Evelyn.

"You didn't send our samples under our names.""

Her smile disappeared.

"What?""

I looked at Daniel.

"She switched them.""

Daniel frowned.

"Claire...""

"This isn't a father test.""

My voice became stronger.

"This report isn't comparing Daniel and the baby.""

The room went completely silent.

I held up the paper.

"It's comparing someone else's sample.""

Evelyn's face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Daniel saw it too.

He slowly turned toward his mother.

"Mom.""

She immediately laughed.

"Don't listen to her.""

But Daniel didn't laugh.

"What is she talking about?""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"She's desperate, Daniel. She's trying to manipulate you.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I know exactly what she did.""

I looked directly at her.

"You collected my hair.""

Her lips pressed together.

"You collected Daniel's sample.""

She said nothing.

"Then you sent them under different names.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Mom?""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"Are you seriously believing your cheating wife over your own mother?""

That sentence changed something in Daniel's face.

Because for the first time...

He didn't look at me.

He looked at her.

"Mom," he repeated.

"What did you do?""

Evelyn's confidence started cracking.

"I did nothing.""

"Then prove it.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Take another test.""

Her eyes widened.

"What?""

"Right now.""

He pointed toward the door.

"We'll go to a clinic.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"That's unnecessary.""

I almost laughed.

Unnecessary.

The woman who had spent weeks trying to destroy my marriage suddenly didn't want proof.

"Why isn't it necessary?"" Daniel asked.

His voice was no longer angry at me.

It was angry at her.

Evelyn looked between us.

Then her expression changed.

The sweet mother disappeared.

The real Evelyn appeared.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Daniel froze.

"What does that mean?""

She grabbed her purse.

"I was trying to save you.""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

She walked toward the door.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"No. You're not leaving.""

For the first time, Evelyn looked afraid.

And that was when I noticed something.

Something sticking out from her purse.

A small white envelope.

With a laboratory logo.

My eyes narrowed.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"Her purse.""

Evelyn immediately stepped back.

"No.""

That single word confirmed everything.

Daniel reached for the envelope.

Evelyn pulled away.

"Don't touch that.""

He stared at her.

"Why?""

She had no answer.

I slowly walked closer.

My hand rested over my stomach.

"Because that envelope contains the truth.""

Daniel opened it.

He pulled out another document.

His face changed as he read the first line.

Then the second.

Then the third.

"Mom...""

His voice was barely a whisper.

"What did you do?""

Evelyn's face turned pale.

Because the second DNA report wasn't about the baby.

It was about something she had been hiding for twenty-seven years.

May you like

And when Daniel read the name on that paper...

He realized his entire family had been built on a lie.
