Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew The Truth

The woman standing outside my door looked like someone who had spent years carrying a weight too heavy for one person.

Her gray hair moved slightly in the cold evening air.

Her hands trembled as she held the envelope.

But her eyes never left Daniel.

Not once.

Daniel stood frozen.

Like his mind was trying to understand something his heart refused to accept.

"You're Daniel Reed, aren't you?""

The question hung between us.

I looked at my husband.

For the first time since I met him, I saw him completely speechless.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just lost.

The woman looked at him with tears gathering in her eyes.

"I know you probably don't believe me.""

Daniel finally found his voice.

"Who are you?""

She swallowed.

"My name is Margaret.""

The name hit him instantly.

I saw it.

The reaction.

The same name from the original birth certificate.

Margaret Reed.

His real mother.

Daniel stepped back.

"No.""

The woman flinched.

"I understand.""

"No.""

His voice became louder.

"No, that can't be true.""

I moved closer.

"Daniel...""

He shook his head.

"I spent my entire life knowing one mother.""

His eyes moved toward the street.

"Knowing one family.""

Margaret's face broke.

"I know.""

"Then why now?""

The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.

"Why after twenty-seven years?""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"Because I thought you were dead.""

The words silenced all of us.

Daniel stared at her.

"What?""

She held the envelope tighter.

"Evelyn told me you died.""

My breath caught.

Daniel looked confused.

"She told you that?""

Margaret nodded.

"She came to the hospital after you were born.""

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"She told me Thomas had taken you.""

I looked at Daniel.

The pieces were falling into place.

"But Thomas said...""

Margaret looked at me.

"You know Thomas?""

I nodded.

"He called Daniel.""

Her expression changed.

"He's alive?""

"Yes.""

For a moment, Margaret closed her eyes.

Like that one piece of information was almost too much.

"I spent twenty-seven years believing everyone I loved was gone.""

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"What's inside?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then she handed it to him.

"Everything I kept.""

Daniel slowly opened it.

Inside were old photographs.

Hospital documents.

Letters.

A small bracelet.

I watched his hands shake as he picked up the first photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

A baby wearing the same bracelet.

Daniel turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

*My son, Daniel. The day my life changed forever.*

His face collapsed.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Just a quiet kind of pain.

The kind that comes when someone finally sees the truth they spent their whole life searching for.

"Why didn't you find me?""

The question came out like a whisper.

Margaret looked down.

"Because every time I tried, Evelyn stopped me.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"How?""

"She changed records.""

"She lied to authorities.""

"She told people I abandoned you.""

I felt sick.

"She made everyone believe you left?""

Margaret nodded.

"She said I wasn't stable enough to raise a child.""

Daniel looked at the documents.

"She did the same thing to Claire.""

The woman looked at me.

"What?""

I explained everything.

The DNA test.

The fake report.

The custody plan.

The inheritance.

As I spoke, Margaret's expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

When I finished, she whispered:

"She's still doing it.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

Margaret took a deep breath.

"Evelyn has always believed children are possessions.""

A chill moved through me.

"She doesn't love them.""

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"She loves owning them.""

Daniel looked away.

That sentence hurt him.

Because deep down, he knew it was true.

We moved into the living room.

Margaret sat across from us while Daniel examined every document she brought.

The more he read, the darker his expression became.

"These are copies of court filings.""

He held up a page.

"She tried to legally remove you from your mother's custody?""

Margaret nodded.

"She claimed I was mentally unstable.""

"But you weren't.""

"No.""

She looked down.

"I was young. I made mistakes. But I loved my son.""

Daniel looked at another document.

"Then how did she win?""

Margaret was quiet.

Finally she said:

"Because someone helped her.""

I looked up.

"Who?""

Margaret's eyes moved to Daniel.

"Your legal father.""

Daniel froze.

"The man who raised me?""

Margaret nodded.

"He knew everything.""

The room became heavy.

"Why would he help her?""

Margaret looked at the floor.

"Because he loved Evelyn.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"So everyone knew except me.""

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

His entire identity had been protected by lies.

Later that night, after Margaret left, Daniel sat alone at the kitchen table.

The same table where everything had started.

I watched him from the doorway.

He looked exhausted.

"I don't know who I am anymore.""

The words were quiet.

I walked closer.

"You're Daniel.""

He looked up.

"Am I?""

"Yes.""

"But my name wasn't even supposed to be Parker.""

I sat across from him.

"Names don't decide who you are.""

He gave a sad smile.

"You sound like my mother.""

The word made him stop.

"My real mother.""

I nodded.

"She loves you.""

He looked at the papers.

"I don't know how to process this.""

"I know.""

He looked at me.

"I keep thinking about yesterday.""

I didn't move.

"The way I treated you.""

His eyes filled.

"I looked at you and believed the worst.""

I stayed quiet.

"I became the person my mother wanted me to become.""

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

He had spent years being controlled.

But he had also hurt me.

"I don't know if I can forgive you yet.""

Daniel nodded.

"I understand.""

"I need you to understand that.""

"I do.""

"No.""

I looked directly at him.

"I need you to understand that loving someone doesn't mean they get unlimited chances to hurt you.""

His eyes dropped.

"I know.""

For the first time, I believed he might.

Then his phone rang.

Both of us looked at it.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

"Hello?""

At first, nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

Evelyn.

"I know Margaret came to you.""

Daniel stood immediately.

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"How did you know?""

A pause.

Then she said:

"Because I know everything that happens in that house.""

I felt a chill.

Daniel looked toward the security cameras.

"What did you do?""

Evelyn ignored the question.

"You need to listen carefully.""

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You're making a mistake.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"No. You made the mistake.""

"No.""

Her voice became colder.

"The mistake was thinking you would believe me forever.""

Silence.

Then she said:

"There is something Claire doesn't know.""

I froze.

Daniel looked at me.

"What?""

Evelyn continued:

"She thinks she was chosen randomly.""

My heart started racing.

"What are you talking about?""

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Ask your wife why she was really brought into this family.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Daniel looked at me.

"Claire?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know what she's talking about.""

Evelyn's voice came through the speaker.

"Oh, she doesn't.""

A pause.

"But someone else does.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"Who?""

Evelyn answered:

"Your father.""

The call ended.

And suddenly, the question wasn't just why Evelyn wanted our baby.

It was why she wanted *me* in Daniel's life from the beginning.

May you like

Because according to her...

My marriage to Daniel was never an accident.
