Chapter 5: The Name Hidden On The Birth Certificate

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Daniel's words repeated in my mind.

*It's your mother.*

But that didn't make sense.

Because Daniel's mother was Evelyn.

The woman who raised him.

The woman whose secrets had already started collapsing around us.

"Daniel," I whispered.

"What do you mean?""

On the other end of the phone, I heard him breathing heavily.

"I went to the county records office.""

"Why?""

"Because I needed proof.""

His voice sounded broken.

"After everything that happened, I couldn't just sit there and believe another story.""

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like the Daniel I used to know.

The man who searched for answers.

The man who never gave up.

The same man who, hours earlier, had refused to listen to me.

"I asked for my original birth records," he continued.

"And?""

"There was a problem.""

"What kind of problem?""

A long pause.

"They told me the record had been amended.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Amended?""

"Changed.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who changed it?""

"I don't know yet.""

I looked at the papers spread across my kitchen table.

The fake DNA report.

The investigator's documents.

The email connecting Rebecca to the plan.

Everything was pointing toward one thing.

Someone had been controlling Daniel's life long before I entered it.

"Daniel...""

"Claire, there's something else.""

The fear in his voice made me sit up.

"What?""

"I found the original record.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What did it say?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"My mother's name wasn't Evelyn.""

I stopped breathing.

"Who was it?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Margaret Reed.""

The name felt familiar.

Not because I knew her.

Because I had heard it before.

I looked toward the papers on the table.

The name Thomas Reed was still visible on the phone log.

Thomas.

Margaret.

Reed.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

"Thomas Reed said he was your biological father.""

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

"That's not possible.""

"Why?""

"Because Evelyn told me my father died before I was born.""

I felt a chill.

Another lie.

Another piece of his life that had been rewritten.

"Daniel, what if...""

I stopped.

Because saying it out loud felt impossible.

"What if Evelyn wasn't your mother?""

The silence on the phone was painful.

"I've been thinking about that.""

His voice cracked.

"And I hate that I even have to ask.""

I sat down.

Because beneath all the anger, I could hear something else.

Pain.

A child who had spent his whole life believing he knew where he came from was suddenly realizing he didn't.

"I need to meet you," Daniel said.

I hesitated.

After everything that happened, part of me wanted to say no.

Part of me wanted him to feel the loneliness I felt.

But another part of me remembered the man he used to be.

The man who held my hand when we lost our first pregnancy.

The man who stayed awake all night when I was sick.

The man who had become someone I didn't recognize.

"I'll meet you," I said.

"But not because everything is okay.""

"I know.""

"And Daniel...""

"Yes?""

"I need you to understand something.""

I looked at the reflection of myself in the dark window.

"I still haven't forgotten what you did.""

His voice became quiet.

"I haven't either.""

We met at a small café away from our neighborhood.

Somewhere private.

Somewhere neither of us had memories attached to.

Daniel arrived first.

I almost didn't recognize him.

His shoulders were lower.

His face looked exhausted.

The anger was gone.

Only regret remained.

When he saw me walk in, he stood.

Then he stopped himself.

Like he wasn't sure he had the right to come closer.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because once upon a time, he would have crossed the entire room just to hold me.

Now there was distance between us.

A distance he created.

"Hi," he said.

I nodded.

"Hi.""

We sat across from each other.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, Daniel looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

I stayed silent.

"I know saying that doesn't fix anything.""

"No.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

His eyes moved to my stomach.

"How is the baby?""

The question surprised me.

Because it sounded genuine.

"He's okay.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"He.""

A small, sad smile appeared.

"I never even asked if you knew the gender.""

I looked away.

"You were too busy proving I betrayed you.""

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Daniel accepted them.

"I deserve that.""

For the first time, I saw him taking responsibility.

Not explaining.

Not defending.

Just accepting.

He reached into his bag.

"I brought something.""

He placed a folder on the table.

I didn't touch it.

"What is it?""

"The original documents.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of old hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Medical files.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw it.

A name.

*Mother: Margaret Elaine Reed.*

Not Evelyn.

Margaret.

Daniel watched me.

"She was my real mother.""

I looked up.

"And Thomas?""

"My biological father.""

I flipped through more pages.

"Then who is Evelyn?""

Daniel looked away.

"That's what I need to find out.""

Before I could respond, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?""

He showed me.

The name made my stomach tighten.

*Rebecca.*

His sister.

The person connected to the fake DNA plan.

Daniel answered.

"What do you want?""

I couldn't hear Rebecca's words.

But Daniel's face changed as she spoke.

"Where are you?""

A pause.

Then:

"No.""

Another pause.

"Don't leave.""

He stood.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked at me.

"She wants to meet.""

"Why?""

He grabbed his jacket.

"Because she says she knows the truth about Evelyn.""

I stood.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"Be careful.""

He nodded.

Then he said something unexpected.

"I wish I had listened to you.""

I didn't answer.

Because I wasn't ready.

But I saw the regret in his eyes.

And for the first time since this nightmare began...

I wondered if Daniel was also a victim.

An hour later, Daniel called me.

I answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

His breathing was uneven.

"Claire...""

Something was wrong.

"What happened?""

"I met Rebecca.""

"And?""

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

"She admitted everything.""

My heart raced.

"What did she admit?""

His voice dropped.

"She didn't create the fake DNA report.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She helped Evelyn hide the truth.""

"About your birth?""

"No.""

The fear in his voice returned.

"About the baby.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

Daniel took a shaky breath.

"Rebecca said the DNA test was never supposed to prove I wasn't the father.""

"Then what was it for?""

The answer came quietly.

"They wanted me to believe you cheated.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why?""

"Because they needed me angry.""

"Angry for what?""

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

"To sign the divorce papers.""

My heart dropped.

"Daniel...""

"I never told you this.""

His voice shook.

"Before the DNA report appeared, my mother already had divorce documents prepared.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because if we divorced before the baby was born...""

He stopped.

I waited.

"Claire, they could claim you were an unfit mother.""

A cold wave moved through me.

"Who could?""

Daniel whispered:

"My mother.""

The line went silent.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Evelyn wasn't trying to destroy our marriage.""

I held my breath.

"She was trying to take our baby.""

And before I could answer, Daniel added:

"Claire... Rebecca just showed me something.""

"What?""

His voice trembled.

"An adoption agreement.""

I froze.

"With whose name on it?""

A long pause.

Then Daniel said:

"Your baby's name.""

I felt my hand move protectively over my stomach.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about a fake DNA test.

It was about someone planning my child's future before he was even born.

May you like

And the person who started the plan...

Was standing much closer to me than I ever realized.
