Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Erased From His Life

Daniel stood frozen with the phone pressed against his ear.

The entire house seemed to stop breathing.

I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

The ticking of the clock on the wall.

Even the soft sound of my own heartbeat.

Everything felt painfully clear.

The man on the phone had just said the one sentence that could destroy everything Daniel believed about himself.

*I'm the man who should have raised you.*

Evelyn looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

"Hang up," she whispered.

Daniel didn't move.

"Who are you?""

His voice was low.

The voice of someone trying desperately not to fall apart.

There was a pause on the other end.

Then the man answered.

"My name is Thomas Reed.""

Daniel stared at his mother.

"Thomas...""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Like hearing that name again brought back something she had buried for decades.

"Daniel," the man continued, "I know this is a lot.""

"You think?""

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

"You call my mother's phone after twenty-seven years and tell me you're my father?""

Thomas sighed.

"I knew this day would come.""

"Why?""

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why would you wait until now?""

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Then Thomas said something that made Daniel's expression change.

"Because your mother made sure I never had a way to find you.""

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him.""

Daniel turned.

"Stop.""

Just one word.

But Evelyn stopped.

Because for the first time in his entire life, Daniel wasn't automatically taking her side.

Thomas continued.

"She told me you were gone.""

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"When you were born, she left the hospital and disappeared.""

Evelyn's face tightened.

"That's not true.""

Thomas ignored her.

"She told me she wanted nothing to do with me. Then months later, I found out she had married another man and raised you as his child.""

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Is that true?""

She shook her head.

"Not like that.""

"Then tell me how.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence was becoming a pattern.

A painful one.

Daniel turned away.

I watched his shoulders tense.

He was trying to stay strong.

But I could see him breaking.

Not because he discovered he had another father.

Because he discovered his entire childhood had been built on missing pieces.

"I need proof," Daniel said.

Thomas answered immediately.

"I expected that.""

A small sound came through the phone.

Like papers moving.

"I have everything.""

Daniel looked up.

"Everything?""

"Your original birth records.""

Evelyn's face changed.

"No.""

Daniel noticed.

"What?""

Thomas continued.

"I have hospital documents. Old photographs. Letters your mother wrote to me.""

Evelyn rushed toward him.

"Daniel, don't do this.""

He stepped back.

"Don't do what?""

"Destroy our family over some stranger's lies.""

I looked at her.

The irony almost hurt.

Because she had spent the last hour destroying ours.

Daniel looked at the phone.

"Thomas.""

"Yes?""

"Send me everything.""

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

"No.""

Daniel pulled away.

The movement wasn't aggressive.

But it was firm.

A boundary he had never created before.

"Mom.""

The word sounded different.

Like he wasn't sure he could still say it the same way.

"Tell me the truth.""

Evelyn looked at him.

For a few seconds, I thought she might finally admit everything.

Instead, her face hardened.

"I raised you.""

Daniel swallowed.

"That's not an answer.""

"It should be.""

"No.""

His voice cracked.

"It shouldn't.""

I looked away.

Because despite everything Daniel had done to me, I could see the pain in his face.

This wasn't just betrayal.

It was grief.

He was mourning a childhood he thought he had.

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

"I was your mother.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You were the person who raised me.""

She flinched.

"Don't say that.""

"Why?""

His eyes filled with anger.

"Because it's true?""

The room became silent again.

Then Thomas spoke through the phone.

"Daniel, there's something else you need to know.""

Daniel looked at the phone.

"What?""

Thomas hesitated.

"The reason your mother hid me.""

Evelyn's face went pale.

"Don't.""

Thomas continued anyway.

"She wasn't afraid I would take you away.""

Daniel frowned.

"Then why?""

"Because she didn't want you to know who your real father was.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas took a breath.

"Your father wasn't the man she married.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What?""

Thomas continued.

"Your mother told everyone your legal father was your biological father.""

Evelyn whispered.

"Stop.""

But nobody listened.

Thomas's voice became softer.

"Because the truth was worse.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"What truth?""

A long pause.

Then Thomas said:

"Your legal father knew.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

"He knew you weren't his son.""

Evelyn looked like she might collapse.

I felt a chill.

Because this wasn't just a secret.

This was a family conspiracy.

Daniel slowly looked at his mother.

"My father knew?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom.""

Still nothing.

"Did he know?""

Finally, Evelyn whispered:

"Yes.""

Daniel stepped backward.

"How long?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Since before you were born.""

The words hit harder than anything else.

Daniel looked like he couldn't breathe.

Twenty-seven years.

A lifetime of lies.

A lifetime of people making decisions about his identity without him.

I moved closer.

"Daniel...""

He looked at me.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to make me laugh.

The man who used to hold my hand in crowded places.

Then I remembered the slap.

The accusation.

The way he looked at me like I was guilty.

I couldn't erase that.

Neither could he.

"I need to leave," he whispered.

Evelyn immediately reacted.

"No.""

He looked at her.

"I need space.""

"Daniel, please.""

"Please what?""

His voice broke.

"Please let you keep lying?""

She had no response.

Daniel walked toward the door.

I watched him.

Part of me wanted him to stop.

Part of me wanted him to apologize.

Part of me wanted the old Daniel back.

But another part of me knew something had changed tonight.

Trust wasn't something you could rebuild with a single apology.

Especially after betrayal.

He stopped near the doorway.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire.""

I didn't answer.

His eyes dropped to my stomach.

"I'm sorry.""

The words were quiet.

Real.

But they came too late.

I looked at him.

"I need more than sorry.""

He nodded slowly.

"I know.""

Then he left.

The front door closed.

And for the first time in years...

Evelyn and I were alone.

The woman who had tried to destroy me stood across from me.

Her perfect image was gone.

Her secret was exposed.

But she wasn't defeated.

Not yet.

She wiped her tears.

Then she looked at me.

And something cold returned to her eyes.

"You think you won.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She walked closer.

"You think because Daniel found out about me, everything is over.""

I said nothing.

She lowered her voice.

"You don't know what you're married into.""

A chill ran through me.

"What does that mean?""

She smiled faintly.

A smile that made my stomach turn.

"Daniel's father wasn't the only person who knew the truth.""

I watched her carefully.

"Who else knew?""

Evelyn picked up her purse.

Then she looked toward the DNA report still lying on the floor.

"The person who helped me switch those samples.""

My blood ran cold.

"Someone helped you?""

She moved toward the door.

And before leaving, she turned back.

"You should be more worried about finding out why someone wanted your baby declared not Daniel's.""

Then she walked away.

I stood there alone.

Seven months pregnant.

My marriage collapsing.

My husband gone.

And a terrifying thought entered my mind.

The fake DNA report wasn't just meant to destroy my relationship.

It was meant to make my child disappear from Daniel's life.

May you like

And whoever helped Evelyn...

Was still watching us.
