Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Envelope

Daniel stood in the middle of the living room, holding the second DNA report with both hands.

For the first time that night, I didn't see anger in his eyes.

I saw confusion.

The kind of confusion that happens when the world you trusted suddenly starts breaking apart.

Evelyn stood near the doorway, her face pale.

She looked nothing like the confident woman who had walked into our home minutes earlier and watched me get accused of betraying her son.

Now she looked trapped.

"Daniel," she said softly.

He didn't look up.

"What is this?""

His voice was different.

Quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

Evelyn swallowed.

"I can explain.""

I almost laughed.

That was always the sentence people used when the truth was already too big to hide.

Daniel lifted the paper.

"Explain what?""

His eyes moved across the page again.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Why does this say my DNA doesn't match yours?""

The room became completely silent.

I felt my breath catch.

For a moment, even I couldn't process what he had just said.

Daniel's mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who told him his entire life story.

The woman who had convinced him that I was a liar.

The DNA report said she wasn't his biological mother.

Evelyn shook her head quickly.

"No.""

She forced a laugh.

"No, that's impossible.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You told me this was a family ancestry project.""

"It was.""

"Then why does this say otherwise?""

Her eyes moved toward me.

Like somehow I was responsible.

"This is because of her.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Evelyn pointed at me.

"She manipulated you.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Mom.""

"No, Daniel, listen to me.""

She stepped closer.

"She has been trying to turn you against me since the day she married you.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Five years.

Five years of trying.

Five years of family dinners.

Five years of avoiding arguments because I wanted Daniel to have a good relationship with his mother.

And now she was rewriting everything.

"Daniel," I said quietly.

"Don't listen to her.""

Evelyn looked at me.

"You don't get to speak.""

I held her gaze.

"Actually, I do.""

My voice surprised even me.

Because hours ago, I had been crying.

I had been begging my husband to believe me.

Now something inside me had changed.

The woman who had tried to destroy my marriage had made one mistake.

She had pushed too far.

Daniel looked between us.

"Both of you stop.""

He ran a hand through his hair.

"I need answers.""

He looked at his mother.

"Start talking.""

Evelyn's lips trembled.

For a second, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she walked toward the couch and sat down.

Slowly.

Like she was preparing for a long conversation.

"I didn't want you to find out this way.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Find out what?""

She looked at him.

"That there are things your father and I never told you.""

My stomach tightened.

Daniel sat across from her.

"What things?""

She looked down.

"Your birth.""

Those two words changed the entire room.

Daniel didn't move.

"What about my birth?""

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"You were born during the hardest time of my life.""

"Mom.""

"Your father and I were struggling. We had problems.""

She avoided his eyes.

"And then you came.""

Daniel frowned.

"What are you saying?""

I watched his expression carefully.

He wanted to reject the possibility.

He wanted to believe this was another lie.

But the paper in his hand was real.

"The test was wrong," Evelyn whispered.

Daniel looked down.

"What?""

"The test must be wrong.""

I stepped forward.

"No.""

Both of them looked at me.

I pointed at the report.

"This is the same thing you used against me.""

Evelyn's expression changed.

"You don't understand.""

"I understand perfectly.""

I looked at Daniel.

"She trusted this test when she thought it could hurt me.""

Then I looked back at Evelyn.

"But now that it exposes her, suddenly the test is wrong?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

He knew I was right.

That hurt her.

I could see it.

Because Evelyn had spent years controlling every situation.

She controlled what Daniel believed.

She controlled what people saw.

But now there was a piece of paper she couldn't manipulate.

Daniel stood up.

"Who is my biological mother?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

"Mom.""

Still nothing.

His voice became louder.

"Who is my biological mother?""

A tear rolled down Evelyn's face.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

Because it was the first real emotion I had seen from her all night.

"I don't know.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

"I don't know.""

She covered her face.

"I was young.""

"When?""

"Before I met your father.""

Daniel stepped back.

The room seemed smaller.

"You lied to me my whole life?""

"No.""

She stood quickly.

"No, I raised you. I loved you.""

"That wasn't my question.""

His voice broke slightly.

"Did you lie?""

Evelyn couldn't answer.

And silence was the answer.

I watched my husband.

The same man who had slapped me.

The same man who had accused me without listening.

Now he was standing in front of the person he trusted most, realizing she had hidden an entire life from him.

But I wasn't ready to forgive him yet.

Not that easily.

Because while his world was falling apart...

Mine had already been shattered.

I touched my cheek.

The pain was still there.

Daniel noticed.

His eyes followed my hand.

For a moment, guilt appeared on his face.

"Claire...""

I stepped away.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

"I was wrong.""

I looked at him.

"You didn't just believe a lie, Daniel.""

My voice shook.

"You hurt me.""

His expression dropped.

"I know.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't know.""

I pointed toward the floor where the first DNA report still remained.

"You saw a piece of paper and decided I was guilty.""

I swallowed hard.

"You didn't ask me.""

"You didn't protect me.""

"You didn't even think about the baby.""

Daniel looked devastated.

But I couldn't ignore what happened.

Not anymore.

Before he could respond, Evelyn's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel noticed.

"Who is it?""

She quickly turned the phone away.

"No one.""

He stepped closer.

"Mom.""

She didn't answer.

The phone kept ringing.

I could see the name on the screen.

Even from across the room.

A name I had never heard before.

*Thomas Reed.*

Evelyn finally answered.

"Why are you calling me?""

Her voice was different.

Not the voice of a mother.

The voice of someone afraid.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at her.

He slowly reached for the phone.

Evelyn stepped back.

"No.""

That one word was enough.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Put it on speaker.""

"Daniel—"

"Put it on speaker.""

She refused.

So Daniel grabbed the phone from her hand.

The call was still connected.

A man's voice came through.

"Evelyn?""

Nobody spoke.

Then the man continued.

"I don't know why you haven't told him yet.""

Daniel froze.

My heart started racing.

The voice continued.

"But if he took that DNA test, then he already knows something is wrong.""

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Who is this?""

Silence.

Then the man said:

"Daniel?""

The room went cold.

The stranger knew his name.

"I guess Evelyn finally got caught.""

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

"Who are you?""

The man took a breath.

Then he answered.

"I'm the man who should have raised you.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

And Daniel's face turned completely pale.

Because the man on the phone wasn't a stranger.

May you like

He was his biological father.

And he was about to reveal why Evelyn had spent twenty-seven years hiding him.
