Chapter 8: The Marriage That Was Never An Accident
For several minutes after Evelyn ended the call, nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.
Daniel stared at the phone in his hand.
I stared at the floor.
Because one sentence had changed everything.
*Your marriage to Daniel was never an accident.*
I wanted to dismiss it.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to say Evelyn was lying again.
That was what she did.
She twisted the truth.
She planted fear.
She made people question reality.
But there was something different this time.
A hesitation in Daniel's eyes.
A hesitation that scared me.
"Daniel.""
He looked at me.
"What?""
"You don't believe her, do you?""
He didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
"Daniel.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"No, I don't know.""
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
"I don't know because every time I thought I knew something about my life, I found out I was wrong.""
He looked at the documents scattered across the table.
"My mother.""
He swallowed.
"My father.""
A pause.
"Now this.""
I sat down slowly.
"What is she talking about?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I don't know.""
"Then we find out.""
He looked at me.
The old Daniel would have immediately believed whoever sounded more confident.
The new Daniel looked afraid of making another mistake.
"How?""
I pointed toward the documents.
"Your father.""
Daniel went still.
"My legal father.""
"Yes.""
"If Evelyn is telling the truth...""
"Then he knows something.""
Daniel stared at the phone.
"I need to find him.""
I hesitated.
"Is he alive?""
Daniel looked at me.
"I don't know.""
That answer was terrifying.
Because apparently, there were entire chapters of his life hidden from him.
The next morning, Daniel and I went to the address listed in the old records.
A house outside the city.
Quiet.
Old.
The kind of place where memories seemed to stay trapped inside the walls.
Daniel stood at the front door for nearly a minute before knocking.
I watched him.
He was nervous.
Not because of danger.
Because he was about to meet another person who might tell him his entire life was a lie.
The door opened.
An older man stood there.
Late seventies.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
The second he saw Daniel, his expression changed.
Like he had been waiting for this moment for years.
"Daniel.""
Daniel froze.
"You know me?""
The man looked away.
"I always knew where you were.""
My stomach dropped.
Daniel's face hardened.
"Then why didn't you come?""
The man's eyes filled.
"Because I was a coward.""
The honesty surprised me.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who are you?""
The man swallowed.
"Richard Parker.""
The name hit.
His legal father.
The man who raised him.
The man who supposedly knew the truth.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Did you know?""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
"All of it?""
"Yes.""
The answer came too easily.
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
"How long?""
"Since the beginning.""
I felt Daniel's pain.
Because hearing the truth was one thing.
Hearing someone admit they chose silence for twenty-seven years was another.
"Why?""
Richard looked at him.
"Because I loved you.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"That's your excuse?""
"No.""
Richard shook his head.
"It's my regret.""
He stepped aside.
"Come inside.""
The house smelled like old books and dust.
Richard led us into a small office.
On the wall were photographs.
One of them showed a young Daniel.
About five years old.
Standing beside Richard.
Daniel stared at it.
"You kept these?""
Richard nodded.
"Every single one.""
Daniel looked away.
"Then why did you let everyone believe a lie?""
Richard sat down.
"Because Evelyn threatened to take you away.""
Daniel frowned.
"How?""
Richard looked at his hands.
"She knew things about me.""
"What things?""
Richard hesitated.
Then he said:
"I had made mistakes before you were born.""
The room became quiet.
"What kind of mistakes?""
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Financial ones.""
He took a deep breath.
"When I met Evelyn, I was wealthy. Powerful. But I was also desperate.""
Daniel listened carefully.
"She knew I couldn't have children.""
The words shocked him.
Richard continued.
"She told me she was pregnant.""
Daniel slowly understood.
"But I wasn't the father.""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
The room felt colder.
"Then why did you raise me?""
Richard looked at him.
"Because the moment I held you, I didn't care about biology.""
His voice broke.
"You were my son.""
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, I saw something complicated in his expression.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
Richard continued.
"Evelyn knew the truth could destroy everything.""
"What truth?""
Richard looked at me.
Then back at Daniel.
"Your father was Thomas Reed.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
Richard looked surprised.
"He's alive?""
"Yes.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Then she lost control.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Richard looked at us.
"Because Thomas was the only person who could expose the entire plan.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"What plan?""
Richard's face became serious.
"The reason Evelyn wanted control over your child.""
My heart tightened.
Richard continued.
"Your grandfather created the trust.""
Daniel nodded.
"We know.""
"No.""
Richard shook his head.
"You don't know everything.""
He walked toward a locked cabinet.
After opening it, he pulled out a folder.
"This was the original agreement.""
Daniel took it.
I watched his face change as he read.
"What is it?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel?""
He handed me the paper.
I read the first paragraph.
Then my eyes stopped.
*The Parker family trust shall remain protected through future generations. If Daniel Parker has a biological child with a legally married spouse, all control transfers to that child.*
I looked at Daniel.
"We know this.""
"No.""
He pointed lower.
There was another section.
A section hidden beneath an amendment.
I read it.
And my blood went cold.
*If Daniel's spouse is proven to be selected through intentional manipulation or fraud, custody rights may be challenged.*
I looked up.
"What?""
Richard's face was filled with regret.
"Evelyn knew about that clause.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You're saying...""
Richard nodded.
"She didn't just need you to believe Claire cheated.""
My stomach tightened.
"She needed to prove the marriage itself was fake.""
The room went silent.
Because that changed everything.
Evelyn wasn't just trying to take my baby.
She was trying to erase my place in Daniel's life completely.
Daniel looked at Richard.
"Why would she think our marriage was fake?""
Richard didn't answer.
He looked at me.
And that terrified me.
"Because...""
He paused.
"Because Evelyn didn't choose Claire randomly.""
My heart started pounding.
"What does that mean?""
Richard opened another folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
My name appeared on the first page.
I felt dizzy.
"What is this?""
Richard looked at me.
"Claire, before you met Daniel...""
He took a breath.
"Evelyn already knew who you were.""
I stared at him.
"That's impossible.""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
Daniel picked up the documents.
His expression changed.
"Claire...""
"What?""
He looked at the page.
Then at me.
"Your father's name is here.""
I froze.
"My father?""
Richard nodded.
"The reason Evelyn wanted you married to Daniel...""
He looked between us.
"Was because she believed your family held the one thing that could destroy her.""
My hands went cold.
"What thing?""
Richard opened the final document.
And when I saw the name written at the bottom...
I felt the entire world shift.
Because the secret Evelyn had been hiding wasn't just about Daniel.
It was connected to my own family.
May you like
And she had brought us together...
Because she was afraid of what we would discover.
