Chapter 6: The Plan To Take My Baby
The adoption papers sat on my kitchen table like a threat.
I stared at the document Daniel had sent me.
My hands were shaking so badly that I had to read the first page three times before the words made sense.
*Proposed Guardian Transfer Agreement.*
That was the official name.
A name designed to sound harmless.
Professional.
Legal.
But underneath it was something much darker.
A plan.
A plan that involved my unborn child.
I placed one hand over my stomach.
The baby moved slightly.
A small kick.
A reminder that this wasn't just a fight between adults.
There was a little life in the middle of all of this.
A life that people had already started making decisions about.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
"I'm outside Rebecca's house.""
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Why are you still there?""
"Because she has more.""
I closed my eyes.
"More?""
A pause.
"Claire, I don't think we understand how long this has been planned.""
The fear in his voice made my stomach tighten.
"What did she tell you?""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"After we got married, my mother started creating documents.""
"Documents for what?""
"Custody.""
My heart dropped.
"Daniel...""
"I know.""
His voice cracked.
"I know.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
"She thought you would leave me eventually.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she never believed you loved me.""
That hurt.
Not because Evelyn thought it.
Because Daniel had spent years allowing his mother to make me feel that way.
"I was your wife," I whispered.
"I know.""
"No, Daniel.""
My voice became sharper.
"You don't.""
I stood from the chair.
"You let her treat me like an outsider.""
"I know.""
"You let her question everything I did.""
"I know.""
"You let her convince you that I was capable of betraying you.""
His silence answered me.
"I was wrong.""
I looked at the adoption papers.
"Yes.""
"I should have trusted you.""
"Yes.""
"I should have protected you.""
My eyes filled.
"But you didn't.""
Daniel didn't argue.
That almost made it worse.
Because for the first time, he understood.
Two hours later, Daniel arrived at my house.
I almost didn't open the door.
Not because I hated him.
Because I wasn't ready to see him.
When I finally did, he looked different.
Not physically.
Something deeper had changed.
The confidence he always carried was gone.
He looked like a man who had spent the night discovering he didn't know his own family.
"I brought everything Rebecca gave me.""
He held up a folder.
I stepped aside.
"Come in.""
We sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where Evelyn had once helped me choose baby names.
The same table where Daniel had kissed my forehead and promised he would be the best father.
Now it was covered in evidence.
Daniel opened the folder.
"There are emails.""
He placed printed pages in front of me.
"Between Rebecca and Evelyn.""
I read the first one.
My heart sank.
*We need him to believe Claire betrayed him. Once Daniel files for divorce, we can establish emotional instability during pregnancy.*
I looked at Daniel.
"Emotional instability?""
He looked ashamed.
"They wanted to use my reaction against you.""
I turned the page.
Another message.
*The baby will be safer with family members who understand what is best.*
My hands tightened.
"Safer?""
Daniel looked down.
"They were planning to make you look dangerous.""
I couldn't believe it.
"I never hurt anyone.""
"I know.""
"They wanted people to believe I couldn't raise my own child?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
I pushed the papers away.
For months, I had wondered why Evelyn suddenly became so interested in my pregnancy.
Why she asked about my doctor's appointments.
Why she wanted copies of ultrasound pictures.
Why she offered to help with baby preparations.
I thought she was becoming closer to me.
I was wrong.
She was collecting information.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
"What?""
"Why would she do this?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Because of inheritance.""
I frowned.
"What inheritance?""
Daniel pulled out another document.
A copy of his father's will.
I read the first page.
Then my eyes stopped.
There was a condition.
*Upon the birth of Daniel Parker's first biological child, control of the family trust will transfer to the child until adulthood.*
I looked up.
"Your father?""
Daniel nodded.
"My legal father.""
The man who raised him.
The man who knew Daniel wasn't his biological son.
"He left everything for my first child.""
My chest tightened.
"So if our baby is born...""
"The trust goes to our son.""
"And Evelyn loses control.""
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly.""
Everything clicked.
The fake DNA report.
The accusation.
The divorce plan.
The custody documents.
It wasn't about a grandmother wanting a relationship with her grandchild.
It was about money.
Power.
Control.
I leaned back.
"She wanted you to hate me before the baby was born.""
Daniel nodded.
"Because if I believed the baby wasn't mine...""
"Then she could take everything.""
"Yes.""
The room went quiet.
Then Daniel said something that surprised me.
"There's something I need to tell you.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Before the DNA report happened... my mother asked me to sign something.""
"What?""
"A temporary financial agreement.""
I stared at him.
"Did you?""
"No.""
His answer came quickly.
"I refused.""
"Why?""
"Because it felt wrong.""
I studied his face.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
He looked away.
"Because I didn't think it mattered.""
I shook my head.
"Daniel.""
"I know.""
He rubbed his face.
"I made a lot of mistakes.""
The honesty was new.
But the damage was still there.
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, there was a picture.
I opened it.
And my blood ran cold.
It was a photograph of Daniel standing outside Rebecca's house.
Taken minutes ago.
Underneath it were four words.
*I KNOW YOU FOUND OUT.*
Daniel saw my expression.
"What is it?""
I handed him the phone.
His face changed.
"She knows.""
I nodded.
Another message appeared.
*You should have stayed quiet.*
Then another.
*Now I have no choice.*
Daniel stood immediately.
"Claire.""
The fear in his voice made me look up.
"What?""
He stared at the screen.
"There is a location attached.""
I looked closer.
My heart stopped.
It wasn't a random location.
It was my doctor's office.
My next prenatal appointment.
Tomorrow morning.
A cold wave moved through me.
"She knows where I go.""
Daniel grabbed his phone.
"We're leaving.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"Somewhere safe.""
But before we reached the door, someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel froze.
I looked at him.
"Who is it?""
He didn't answer.
Because he was staring at the security camera screen.
The person standing outside was holding something.
An envelope.
Daniel walked closer.
Then stopped.
His face turned pale.
"What?""
He whispered:
"That's my father's handwriting.""
My stomach tightened.
Daniel opened the door slightly.
The person outside wasn't Evelyn.
It wasn't Rebecca.
It was an elderly woman I had never seen before.
She looked at Daniel with tears in her eyes.
Then she said:
"You're Daniel Reed, aren't you?""
Daniel couldn't move.
The woman held out the envelope.
"I've been looking for you for twenty-seven years.""
She took a shaky breath.
"And I know the real reason your mother stole you from me.""
Daniel stared at her.
And behind him, I realized something terrifying.

The secrets we had uncovered weren't the end.
They were only the beginning.
