Chapter 8: The Person Behind Everything
The name on my phone belonged to Daniel.
The lawyer.
The man who had brought us evidence against Vanessa.
The man who claimed he was helping my father.
I stared at the message.
“This has to be fake.””
My father didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad?””
He took the phone from my hand.
He looked at the screen.
Then he sat down.
Slowly.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s not possible.””
But his expression said something different.
He believed it.
The next morning, my father called Daniel.
He put the phone on speaker.
Daniel answered after three rings.
“Jack.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At my office.””
“Good.””
Another pause.
“Why?””
My father looked at me.
“Because we need to talk about your involvement.””
Silence.
Then Daniel laughed softly.
Not nervously.
Confidently.
“I was wondering when you’d figure it out.””
My heart dropped.
My father stood.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The word hung in the air.
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because your family never understood what was rightfully mine.””
My father’s face hardened.
“Mine?””
Daniel laughed again.
“You really think your father built everything alone?””
“What are you talking about?””
“My grandfather helped your grandfather create the company.””
I looked at my father.
Daniel continued.
“Your family got wealthy. My family got forgotten.””
“That doesn’t justify theft.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“But it explains it.””
My father clenched his jaw.
“You manipulated Vanessa.””
“I gave her opportunities.””
“You used her.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“She was easy to control.””
I felt anger rise.
“You ruined a family.””
“No.””
Daniel corrected me.
“Your family was already broken.””
I hated how calm he sounded.
Like he was discussing a business deal.
My father asked:
“Why involve Lily?””
Daniel became quiet.
Then he answered:
“Because children inherit what adults build.””
I felt a chill.
“You wanted her money.””
“I wanted balance.””
My father ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he grabbed his keys.
“Where are you going?””
“To finish this.””
I followed him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“This is my fight.””
I shook my head.
“No, Dad.””
I looked upstairs toward Lily’s room.
“This started before she was born. It’s been about protecting her entire life.””
My father stared at me.
Then nodded.
We went to Daniel’s office.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was waiting.
“I knew you’d come.””
My father placed the documents on his desk.
“You forged records.””
Daniel smiled.
“You’ll have trouble proving that.””
“You admitted it.””
“I admitted nothing.””
He leaned back.
“Everything is legal.””
I looked around.
The confidence.
The expensive furniture.
The calm expression.
He truly believed he had won.
Then my father smiled.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
My father reached into his coat.
“I recorded the phone call.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You wouldn’t.””
“I would.””
For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.
My father stood.
“You thought I was weak because I was quiet.””
He placed the recording device on the desk.
“You made the same mistake everyone else did.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What mistake?””
My father looked at him.
“You forgot I was a father.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel laughed.
“You think this changes everything?””
He stood.
“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””
I frowned.
“What secret?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Your mother didn’t die naturally.””
The world stopped.
My father froze.
“What did you say?””
Daniel smiled.
“Ask your father.””
I looked at my dad.
His face had gone completely white.
Because he knew.
He knew what Daniel was talking about.

And I realized the truth was darker than money.
Much darker.
