Chapter 4: The Truth My Father Buried
The next morning, I couldn’t look at my father the same way.
Not because I thought he was evil.
But because I realized everyone had secrets.
Even the people who loved us.
“Who called you?”” my father asked.
I held my phone tightly.
“You tell me.””
His face changed.
“I don’t know.””
“Someone said you’ve been lying.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Dad.””
He sat down slowly.
“There’s something I should have told you.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My father rubbed his hands together.
“I knew Vanessa was interested in the inheritance.””
I stared at him.
“And you married her anyway?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“I changed my will.””
I waited.
“I put everything into a trust.””
My eyes narrowed.
“For who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked toward Lily’s room.
“For you and Lily.””
I froze.
My father continued.
“I knew Vanessa would never treat your daughter like her own.””
The anger inside me softened slightly.
“Then why did you stay with her?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Being alone.””
That confession hurt.
Because my father had spent years protecting a woman because he feared losing her.
And in the process…
He almost lost us.
That afternoon, we received another surprise.
A lawyer arrived at the house.
His name was Daniel.
He placed a folder on the table.
“I represent your father.””
I looked at my father.
“What is this?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Evidence.””
Against Vanessa.
But there was something else.
Documents showing Vanessa had been secretly planning something for years.
“She was preparing for divorce before the marriage even became unstable,” Daniel explained.
My father looked sick.
“How long?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Five years.””
Five years.
My father closed his eyes.
Then the doorbell rang again.
This time, it was Ethan.
He looked nervous.
“Can I talk to you?””
My father stood.
“What do you want?””
Ethan swallowed.
“I know what Mom did.””
Everyone went silent.
He looked at me.
“She told me not to say anything.””
My stomach tightened.
“Say what?””
Ethan looked down.
“The tickets weren’t the first time.””
My father stepped forward.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan took a breath.
“Mom has been deleting messages from Lily’s school. She didn’t want Grandpa spending time with her.””
I felt sick.
My father’s face turned pale.
“She did what?””
Ethan pulled out his phone.
“I saved screenshots.””
He showed us.
Messages.
Plans.
Manipulation.
Years of it.
My father sat down.
The strongest man I knew suddenly looked exhausted.
Then Ethan whispered:
“There’s one more thing.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Mom wasn’t just trying to get your money.””
A pause.
“She was trying to make sure Lily never inherited anything.””
My blood ran cold.
Because that meant the airport wasn’t about a plane ticket.
May you like
It was about something much bigger.
And Vanessa had almost succeeded.
